2. What is colour?
Colour is the visual representation of how light
reflects off of the surfaces.
Colour is the most powerful design element.
Characteristics of colour:
Hue is the most obvious characteristics of
colour. There are an infinite number of possible
hues.
Chroma refers to the intensity of colour.
Shade and tint are the terms that refer to the
variation of a hue.
3. History of Colour Wheel:
The first colour wheel was invented
by Sir Issac Newton in 1666.
Moses Haris revealed the multitude
of colours in his colour wheel.
Johann Wolfgang Goathe began
studying psychological effects of
colours and created a colour wheel
showing them.
The current form of colour wheel
was developed by Johannes Itten.
4. WHAT IS COLOR WHEEL?
A color wheel (also referred to as a color circle) is a visual representation of colors
arranged according to their chromatic relationship. Begin a color wheel by positioning
primary hues equidistant from one another, then create a bridge between primaries
using secondary and tertiary colors.
5. COLOR TERMINOLOGY
Primary Colors: Colors at their basic essence; those
colors that cannot be created by mixing others.
Secondary Colors: Those colors achieved by a
mixture of two primaries.
6. Tertiary Colors: Those colors achieved by a mixture of
primary and secondary hues.
CMYK
CMYK, a four-color printing process that uses only cyan,
magenta, yellow and black inks, is primarily used for printing
brochures, business cards, posters and other paper-based
products.
7. RGB
RGB, which uses mixtures of red, green and blue, is the
preferred color profile for digital devices and computer
screens and appears much brighter than CMYK colors.
8. Color Scheming:
• Choice of colors
• Creates appeal in
designs
• Used in digital media,
designs & many others
medias.
10. Analogous Scheme:
Dominance Harmony
Use of colors which are
adjacent
Primary/secondary are
prominent while tertiary are
complementary .
Accented analogous
11. Complemetary
Colorscheme
“Complementary colors are
any two Hues positioned
exactly opposite each other on
the Basic Color Wheel.”
This Color Scheme:
•Creates Vibrant look.
•Offers the most contrast, and
consequently, draws maximum
attention.
Drawback:
•Harder to balance.
12. Triadic & Tetradic Color schemes
“A triadic color scheme
uses colors that are evenly
spaced around the color
wheel.”
“The rectangle or tetradic
color scheme uses four
colors arranged into two
complementary pairs.”
13. Importance of Color Scheming in Architecture
"Color is the spice of life. It’s a mood-changer. You change
the color from room to room to create a new mood.”
14. Color Scheming:
• Minimizes architectural defects.
• Changes atmosphere of any building.
• Establishes harmony.
• Creates illusion.
