Crimes Against Women are as old as civilization and
equally ancient are efforts to combat and arrest them. These
efforts have not succeeded and crimes are still maintaining their
upward trend. There are records of women being raped,
abducted, beaten and subjected to humiliating treatment. Ravan
had abducted Sita and taken her to Lanka, the Kauravas had
insulted Draupadi in full view of Raj Darbar. Dushasan had
tried to denude her in the presence of all the respectable elders.
Draupadi’s supplications for justice to all the elders present in
the Durbar fell on deaf ears. No one did or perhaps could raise a
voice against the injustice that was being perpetrated. The
situation is still not very different, in spite of the march of
civilization and enactment of special laws to protect women
against such crimes.
17. Legal Machinery should become more efficient in the
administration of criminal Justice. Women must reject to pay
Dowry and cast out a person who demands Dowry.
G.Sucharitha, Joint Director, Gender Programming Centre for
World Solidarity says “If the Police is strict in dealing with the
offenders, things would not have come to such a pass. One of the
reasons why there are more crimes against women is that law
enforcers do not deal with the offenders firmly”.
According to Women’s Rights activist Noorjehan Siddiqui
“Women in A.P feel unsafe because the Government is also not
sincere in ensuring their protection”.
18. Quote by Kofi Annan, Former U.N Secretary General
“Violence Against Women is perhaps the most shameful
human rights violation and it is perhaps the most pervasive. It
knows no boundaries of Geography, Culture or Wealth. As
long as it continues, we cannot claim to be making real
progress towards Equality, Development and Peace”.
