Canada has achieved much better population health outcomes than the United States, despite similarities between the two countries. This is largely due to Canada's view that the government should play a role in healthcare. The Canadian experience shows that a diverse population and wait times for services do not inevitably cause poor health. By examining the factors that promote health in Canada, the United States could learn lessons to improve population health. The Canadian Best Practices Portal challenges public health professionals to address the root causes of health issues through "upstream interventions" that target the social determinants of health.
