friends and give thanks for our good fortunes.
Unfortunately, the Holidays can also be a time
when mishaps occur. Hopefully this presentation
will remind you of the precautions we can all take
to have a safe and happy Holiday season.

individuals they perceived as easy target not aware
of what is going on around them.
This is the time to develop and practice your
situational awareness and review the following
guidance to enhance your personal security and
safety tip.

Maintain a heightened level of situational and security
awareness
Be observant and report any suspicious behavior
If there is a security concern, leave the area as quickly
and safely as possible, when in doubt, leave
Maintain a rough plan of how you can quickly exit any
area should the need arise, consider options and
identify the safe areas.
Familiarize yourself with your locations and develop a
sense of safety and security awareness of the area.
Avoid separating fight for people you don’t know or met

Ensure the outside of your home is well lit and all
exterior windows and doors are locked
Try not to display gifts/ valuable items that visible
from windows
Don’t advertise your expensive new goods/ items
and gift received by leaving boxes at open trash
collections

Holiday Home Decorations:
Always inspect cords for fraying and loose
connections.
Do not use indoor extension cords outside.
Use grounded extension cords.
Use ladder to climb to reach desired heights
Do not leave real candles unattended.
Unplug your decorations/lights when you go to
bed.
Keep fire extinguisher handy.
Avoid Poisonous decorative plants:
Keep decorations out of the reach of small
children.

Holiday Cooking
Turn handles on pots and pans inward on stove.
Do not leave cooking unattended.
Do not leave foods that require refrigeration out too long (spoiled
foods).
Keep food, utensils, preparation surfaces and hands clean
Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold
Keep fire Extinguisher and fire blankets at close range

HOLIDAY PARTIES AND ALCOHOL
Don’t drink alcohol in excess of one per hour
1 beer = 1 shot of whiskey = 1 glass of wine
Never drink alcohol on an empty stomach
Feel free to refuse alcohol regardless of pressure or
encouragement to drink
Don’t drink alcohol if you are pregnant or are using medication
If at a public setting, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DRINKS
UNATTENDED!

TOY BUYING SAFETY
Select Toys to suit age, abilities, skills & the child’s interest.
For infants & toddlers, avoid toys with small parts (choking).
Don’t buy electric toys with heating elements for children under 8.
Read the label and use the age guidelines for that toy.
Look for sturdy construction and tightly secured small parts.
Discard plastic wrappings immediately (suffocation hazard).

Advice children to stay close to you at all time
especially in public places- share password
Never permit unaccompanied trips to the rest room
or vehicle
Teach children to go to a store clerk/ receptionist
for assistance if they are separated from you
Ensure children know their full names, address and
telephone number of parents – Password
Ensure children understand the need to inform your
if a stranger approaches them – password

Do not post on social media your intentions to travel
If travelling, ensure your home has the appearance of
being occupied
Ensure trusted neighbors are aware you are away
Expect increased security at the airports/ public motor
parks.
Don’t leave bags unattended or carry one for
strangers.
Keep your luggage at eye reach or close range and
watch over them always.
Wear loose fitting natural fiber clothes, avoid
synthetics.

Drive even more defensively during this time of the year
When possible, travel with others and avoid congested
areas
While driving keep doors and windows locked
Ensure your vehicle is in proper working condition

Invite a friend to shop with you
Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason
Avoid display of expensive jewellery
Ask your neighbours to watch your home while you’re away
Lock doors and windows before leaving home
Ladies – secure handbag close to body
Men – keep wallet in inside coat pocket or front pants pocket
Carry your house keys and car keys separate
Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings
Don’t carry cash – pay with credit card or debit card
When exiting stores, do not walk alone
If shopping with your children, don’t leave them alone or give
them pass word

Choose an ATM located in a bank, mall or a well-lit
location
Protect your PIN
Do not throw away your receipts at ATM locations
Immediately put money away prior to departing
When shopping try to pay with credit cards as much
as you can
Avoid carrying large amount of cash
