to Help Consumers Understand EW

2. Introduction
Ryan Novaczyk took over the responsibility of CEO of New Perspective Senior
Living after he was promoted following an internal leadership shuffle in
September 2019. In this role, Ryan Novaczyk is fully committed to keeping the
company’s tradition as a major contributor in the senior living marketplace in the
states of Wisconsin, North Dakota, Illinois, and Minnesota.

3. The Minnesota Department of Human Services has released a new brochure that
will help consumers gain a better understanding of the implementation of Elderly
Waivers (EW) in assisted living facilities. The brochure also provides useful
information for EW eligibility and the EW application process. The brochure is
entitled “Elderly Waiver services in assisted living: What you need to know.”
To be eligible for the EW program, a senior must be at least 65 years old, must
meet the requirements of the level of care needed, and must have his or her
income and assets within the set limits of the Medical Assistance for Long-Term
Care Services. As to the level of care needed, a senior is eligible for EW services if
he or she needs the level of care offered in a nursing home, but ops to live in the
community. Under the EW rules, the phrase “live in the community” means living
in own home or apartment, or in an assisted living facility.

4. With respect to the income limit, the limit depends on the size of the senior’s
family, and the income must fall below the federal poverty guidelines. If the
senior’s income goes above the limit, he or she can still become eligible for the EW
program by paying the spend-down of the waiver obligation.
As to assets, the amount is pegged at $3,000. A senior who exceeds this limit may
designate funds, pay unpaid medical costs, or purchase burial services to reduce
his or her assets and become eligible for EW.
