2. Seminar on:- Introduction To Railway Transportation or Railway Engineering.
Presented By:- Rushikesh Mate & Soniya Gupta.
Guided By:- Prof. P. A. Pethkar.
Class:- SYCE
Subject:- Professional Practices II
Collage Name:- GES’S.Sr.Dr.M.S.G.Polytechnic Nashik Road.
Department of Civil Engineering 2017-2018
3. Topic we are Represented,
• Transportation
• Railway Transportation
• Component Part of Railways
• Rails
• Sleepers
• Ballast
• Fixtures and Fastening
• Super Elevation
4. Transportation
It’s the branch of civil engineering which deals with construction, design,
development and maintenance of roadways, airports, tunnels and bridges.
Modes or Types of Transportation:-
Roadways
Railways
Air ways
Water ways
5. Railway Transportation
Railway transport is the life line of the nation.
It’s essential for mass transportation of men and materials for long
distance.
Railway is commonly termed as permanent way for transportation.
6. Rails
Rails are the rolled steel sections laid end to end in two parallel lines over the
sleepers to form a railway track is called as rails.
Types of Rails:-
• Doubled Headed Rails (DH)
• Bull Headed (BH)
• Flat Footed (FF)
7. Sleepers
These are the members laid transversely under the rail for supporting and fixing
them at the gauge distance apart are known as sleepers.
Types of Sleepers:-
A. Wooden Sleeper
B. Metal Sleeper
C. Concrete Sleeper
8. Ballast
Ballast is material like broken stone, gravel or any other granular material spread and packed
below and around the sleeper.
• Types of Ballast:-
I. Broken stone
II. Moorum
III. Sand
IV. Kankar
V. Brick Ballast
VI. Gravel
VII. Ashes/ Cinders
VIII. Blast furnace Slag
IX. Selected Earth
9. Super Elevation or Canting of Rail
The inner rail of track is kept low as compare to outer rail at different curves.
This rising of outer rail is known as super elevation.
Necessity of Super Elevation:-
• It reduce wear and creep of rail on curved paths.
• It provide comfortable ride to passengers.
Limit of Super Elevation:-
• For B.G it’s 16.76 cm
• For N.G it’s 10 cm
• For M.G it’s 7.62 cm
10. Fixtures and Fastening
• The rail which are fix permantaly with each other and the fitting required for this
is known as fixtures.
• The arrangement which is just required for securing connections between rails
and sleepers and rail and rail are known as fastening,
• Types of Fixtures:-
• Fish Plates
• Bearing Plates
• Chairs
• Types of Fastening:-
• Spikes
• Bolts
• Keys
11. Conclusion:-
Form this topic Introduction to Railway Transportation we can learn that,
• Introduction to Railway transportation.
• Rails & their types.
• Ballast & their types.
• Sleeper & their types.
• Super elevation and their limitation for various gauges.
• Fixtures and fastening.
