Efficiency of Working Capital Management of Selected
Paint Company in India: An Empirical Assessment

Introduction
In today’s challenging and competitive business environment efficient management of
working capital (WC) is an integral component of overall corporate strategy to create
shareholders’ value. In fact, the progress of a company is largely dependent on the skillful
utilization of its WC. Thus efficiency with which WC is managed in a company is of great
significance for its overall well being. In paint companies also, the management of WC is
considered as an extremely crucial decision area of financial management. Without
managing efficiently both short term assets and liabilities, the companies are not able to
engage themselves in achieving the wealth maximization objective. The Indian paint
industry is today worth over INR 62,000 crores (USD 8 billion) and is the fastest growing
major paint industries in the world with a consistent double-digit growth over the last 2
decades. It has over 3,000 paint manufactures, with nearly all global majors present in
the country.
Objective of the study
The present study was conducted with the following objectives:
To study the performance index of WCM of the selected companies.
To evaluate the WC utilisation index of the companies under study.
To analyse the efficiency index of WCM of the selected companies.
To measure the degree of uniformity among the companies under study in
respect of each of the selected WCM efficiency parameters, such as
performance index, utilisation index and efficiency index of WCM.
Methodology of the Study
The present study used data for the period 2004-05 to 2018-19 collected from secondary sources i.e Capitaline
Corporate Database of Capital Market Publishers (I). Ltd ,Mumbai the four major paint companies namely,
Asian Paints, Berger Paints, Kansai Nerolac, Akzo Nobel and Indigo Paints.
Analysis of Data: While measuring the efficiency of WCM of the companies under study the Efficiency Index of
WCM (EIWCM) as developed by Bhattacharya (1995) was applied. According to the Bhattacharya Model, EIWCM
represents the product of Performance Index of WCM (PIWCM) and Working Capital Utilisation Index (UIWCM),
i.e. EIWCM= PIWCM x UIWCM. This formula was followed in the present study to arrive at the EIWCM of the selected
companies. In this study PIWCM of each of the companies was ascertained by applying the following formula:

i = 1, 2, 3……., N.
Similarly, UIWCM of each of the selected companies was measured in this study using the following formula:

Where A= Current assets/Sales.
In this study, the current assets group of each of the companies under study was divided into seven
different components, namely debtor, store and spares, goods-in-transit, other inventory, advances to
suppliers, cash and other current assets.
For the purpose of analyzing the performance index of WCM, WC utilization index and efficiency
index of WC, simple statistical tools like arithmetic mean and consistency coefficient (i.e. ratio of
arithmetic mean to standard deviation), statistical techniques like linear trend analysis, analysis of
Kendall’s coefficient of concordance and statistical tests like t-test and Chi-square test were used at
appropriate places.

Concluding Observations
Berger Paints established itself as the best performer among the selected companies in Indian paint
sector in respect of performance index of WCM while Akzo Nobel and Indigo Paints were placed on the last
bench in this respect during the period under study. However, strong evidence of upward trend in the
performance of Akzo Nobel in managing the different components of its current asset was noticed during
the study period. A notable declining trend in the performance of the different components of current
assets was observed in both Kansai Nerolac and Indigo Paints during the period under study.
Asian Paints was recognized as the best performer among the companies under study in respect of
efficient utilization of current assets whereas Kansai Nerolac was placed in the last rank during the study
period. No significant rising or downward trend in the efficiency of utilizing current assets in any of the
selected companies was observed during the period under study.
Asian Paints proved itself as the best performer among the five selected companies in Indian paint sector
in respect of efficiency in managing WC and it was followed by Berger Paints, Kansai Nerolac, Indigo
Paints and Akzo Nobel respectively in that order during the study period. This study also reveals that there
was a noticeable declining trend in the efficiency of managing WC of Kansai Nerolac during the period
under study.
Another notable outcome of the study is that a notable degree of uniformity among the selected
companies in respect of all the three selected aspects of WCM as suggested in the Bhattacharya Model,
such as average performance of managing the different components of current assets (as reflected by
PIWCM), efficiency of utilization of current assets (as indicated by UIWCM) and efficiency of managing WC
(as shown by EIWCM) was observed during the study period.

Introduction In today’s challenging and competitive business environment efficient management of working capital (WC) is an integral component of overall corporate strategy to create shareholders’ value. In fact, the progress of a company is largely dependent on the skillful utilization of its WC. Thus efficiency with which WC is managed in a company is of great significance for its overall well being. In paint companies also, the management of WC is considered as an extremely crucial decision area of financial management. Without managing efficiently both short term assets and liabilities, the companies are not able to engage themselves in achieving the wealth maximization objective. The Indian paint industry is today worth over INR 62,000 crores (USD 8 billion) and is the fastest growing major paint industries in the world with a consistent double-digit growth over the last 2 decades. It has over 3,000 paint manufactures, with nearly all global majors present in the country.

Objective of the study The present study was conducted with the following objectives: To study the performance index of WCM of the selected companies. To evaluate the WC utilisation index of the companies under study. To analyse the efficiency index of WCM of the selected companies. To measure the degree of uniformity among the companies under study in respect of each of the selected WCM efficiency parameters, such as performance index, utilisation index and efficiency index of WCM.
  • 4. Methodology of the Study The present study used data for the period 2004-05 to 2018-19 collected from secondary sources i.e Capitaline Corporate Database of Capital Market Publishers (I). Ltd ,Mumbai the four major paint companies namely, Asian Paints, Berger Paints, Kansai Nerolac, Akzo Nobel and Indigo Paints. Analysis of Data: While measuring the efficiency of WCM of the companies under study the Efficiency Index of WCM (EIWCM) as developed by Bhattacharya (1995) was applied. According to the Bhattacharya Model, EIWCM represents the product of Performance Index of WCM (PIWCM) and Working Capital Utilisation Index (UIWCM), i.e. EIWCM= PIWCM x UIWCM. This formula was followed in the present study to arrive at the EIWCM of the selected companies. In this study PIWCM of each of the companies was ascertained by applying the following formula:
  • 5. Cont. Where Is = Sales index Wi= Individual group of current assets N= Number of current asset group i = 1, 2, 3……., N. Similarly, UIWCM of each of the selected companies was measured in this study using the following formula: UIWCM Where A= Current assets/Sales. In this study, the current assets group of each of the companies under study was divided into seven different components, namely debtor, store and spares, goods-in-transit, other inventory, advances to suppliers, cash and other current assets. For the purpose of analyzing the performance index of WCM, WC utilization index and efficiency index of WC, simple statistical tools like arithmetic mean and consistency coefficient (i.e. ratio of arithmetic mean to standard deviation), statistical techniques like linear trend analysis, analysis of Kendall’s coefficient of concordance and statistical tests like t-test and Chi-square test were used at appropriate places.

Concluding Observations Berger Paints established itself as the best performer among the selected companies in Indian paint sector in respect of performance index of WCM while Akzo Nobel and Indigo Paints were placed on the last bench in this respect during the period under study. However, strong evidence of upward trend in the performance of Akzo Nobel in managing the different components of its current asset was noticed during the study period. A notable declining trend in the performance of the different components of current assets was observed in both Kansai Nerolac and Indigo Paints during the period under study. Asian Paints was recognized as the best performer among the companies under study in respect of efficient utilization of current assets whereas Kansai Nerolac was placed in the last rank during the study period. No significant rising or downward trend in the efficiency of utilizing current assets in any of the selected companies was observed during the period under study. Asian Paints proved itself as the best performer among the five selected companies in Indian paint sector in respect of efficiency in managing WC and it was followed by Berger Paints, Kansai Nerolac, Indigo Paints and Akzo Nobel respectively in that order during the study period. This study also reveals that there was a noticeable declining trend in the efficiency of managing WC of Kansai Nerolac during the period under study. Another notable outcome of the study is that a notable degree of uniformity among the selected companies in respect of all the three selected aspects of WCM as suggested in the Bhattacharya Model, such as average performance of managing the different components of current assets (as reflected by PIWCM), efficiency of utilization of current assets (as indicated by UIWCM) and efficiency of managing WC (as shown by EIWCM) was observed during the study period.
