Why and how to engage a Complex Event Processor from a Java Web Application
Complex Event Processors are capable of handling large volumes of events - by filtering, aggregating or detecting patterns. Java Applications use a CEP to pre-process incoming signals. These applications can also generate the events - for example the user click and navigation behavior in the web application - and report them to the CEP. The web application can subsequently utilize the outcomes from the CEP to for example intelligently guide the user or present relevant details. This session will show various ways in which a CQL based CEP can be integrated into a Java application to enhance the web application's behavior.
The intended audience for this presentation consists of experience Web Java and Enterprise Java developers.

In this session, you will learn best practices for implementing simple to advanced real-time streaming data use cases on AWS. First, we’ll review decision points on near real-time versus real time scenarios. Next, we will take a look at streaming data architecture patterns that include Amazon Kinesis Analytics, Amazon Kinesis Firehose, Amazon Kinesis Streams, Spark Streaming on Amazon EMR, and other open source libraries. Finally, we will dive deep into the most common of these patterns and cover design and implementation considerations.
Introduction to Stream Processing
Independent of the source of data, the integration of event streams into an Enterprise Architecture gets more and more important in the world of sensors, social media streams and Internet of Things. Events have to be accepted quickly and reliably, they have to be distributed and analyzed, often with many consumers or systems interested in all or part of the events. Storing such huge event streams into HDFS or a NoSQL datastore is feasible and not such a challenge anymore. But if you want to be able to react fast, with minimal latency, you can not afford to first store the data and doing the analysis/analytics later. You have to be able to include part of your analytics right after you consume the data streams. Products for doing event processing, such as Oracle Event Processing or Esper, are available for quite a long time and used to be called Complex Event Processing (CEP). In the past few years, another family of products appeared, mostly out of the Big Data Technology space, called Stream Processing or Streaming Analytics. These are mostly open source products/frameworks such as Apache Storm, Spark Streaming, Flink, Kafka Streams as well as supporting infrastructures such as Apache Kafka. In this talk I will present the theoretical foundations for Stream Processing, discuss the core properties a Stream Processing platform should provide and highlight what differences you might find between the more traditional CEP and the more modern Stream Processing solutions.

Flink Forward Berlin 2017: Bas Geerdink, Martijn Visser - Fast Data at ING - ...
ING is using Apache Flink for creating streaming analytics ('fast data') solutions. We created a platform with Flink and Kafka that offers high-throughput and low-latency, ideally suited for complex and demanding use cases in the international bank such as customer notifications and fraud detection. These use cases require fast data processing and a business rules engine and/or machine learning evaluation system. Integrating these components together in a always-on, distributed architecture can be challenging. In this talk, we'll start with a brief overview of the use cases. You'll learn why ING chose Flink for these use cases, and see the architecture of the streaming data platform in depth. Finally, we'll share some lessons learned and useful insights for organizations who embark on a similar journey.

Using AWS to Build a Scalable Big Data Management & Processing Service (BDT40...
By turning the data center into an API, AWS has enabled Sumo Logic to build a very large scale IT operational analytics platform as a service at unprecedented scale and velocity. Based around Amazon EC2 and Amazon S3, the Sumo Logic system is ingesting many terabytes of unstructured log data a day while at the same time delivering real-time dashboards and supporting hundreds of thousands of queries against the collected data. When co-founder and CTO Christian Beedgen started Sumo Logic, it was obvious that the service would have to scale quickly and elastically, and AWS has been providing the perfect infrastructure for this endeavor from the start.
In this talk, Christian dives into the core Sumo Logic architecture and explains which AWS services are making Sumo Logic possible. Based around an in-house developed automation and continuous deployment system, Sumo Logic is leveraging Amazon S3 in particular for large-scale data management and Amazon DynamoDB for cluster configuration management. By relying on automation, Sumo Logic is also able to perform sophisticated staging of new code for rapid deployment. Using the log-based instrumentation of the Sumo Logic codebase, Christian will dive into the performance characteristics achieved by the system today and share war stories about lessons learned along the way.

Large Language Models and the End of Programming

In this talk, I discuss the ways in which LLMs will impact the software industry, from replacing human software developers with AI, to replacing conventional software with models that perform reasoning, computation, and problem-solving.
Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data Analysis
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

Cross-facility research orchestration comes with ever-changing constraints regarding the availability and suitability of various compute and data resources. In short, a flexible data and processing fabric is needed to enable the dynamic redirection of data and compute tasks throughout the lifecycle of an experiment. In this talk, we illustrate how we easily leveraged Globus services to instrument the ACE research testbed at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility with flexible data and task orchestration capabilities.
How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good Practices
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
