A presentation looking at the ultimate aims for the Christian life. It is a systematic study of the use of the word glory in scripture and the implications of its use.
2. Humility Needed
What is justification by faith? It is the
work of God in laying the glory of man
in the dust, and doing for man that
which it is not in his power to do for
himself. When men see their own
nothingness, they are prepared to be
clothed with the righteousness of Christ.
- {FLB 111.2}(E. G. White)
3. Humility Needed
You will never glory in God till first of all
God has killed your glorying in
yourself. {Charles H. Spurgeon}
But God forbid that I should glory, save in
the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by
whom the world is crucified unto me, and
I unto the world. (Galatians 6:14 KJV)
4. The Eye Must Be Single
The light of the body is the eye: therefore
when thine eye is single, thy whole body
also is full of light; ... If thy whole body
therefore be full of light, having no part
dark, the whole shall be full of light, as
when the bright shining of a candle doth
give thee light. (Luke 11:34-36 KJV)
5. The Eye Must Be Single
You should have an eye single
to the glory of God. Manuscript

Every eye must now be single
to the glory of God. {PC 11.3}

8. And the LORD descended in the cloud,
and stood with him there, and
proclaimed the name of the LORD.
And the LORD passed by before him, and
proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God,
merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and
abundant in goodness and truth, …
(Exodus 34:5-7)
9. …Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving
iniquity and transgression and sin, and
that will by no means clear the guilty;
visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon
the children, and upon the children's
children, unto the third and to the fourth
generation. (Exodus 34:5-7)
10. Justice and judgment are the habitation
of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go
before thy face. (Psalms 89:14)
Clouds and darkness are round about him:
righteousness and judgment are the
habitation of his throne. (Psalms 97:2)
The weightier matters of the law,
judgment, mercy, and faith (Matthew
23:23)
11. The Hebrew word for name is
<shem>:
“an appellation, as a mark or
memorial of individuality; by
implication honor, authority,
character.”
“The glory of God is His character.”
{RC 214.3} {AG 322.2} {Prt,
December 29, 1892 par. 6}
12. But he that glorieth, let him glory
in the Lord. (2 Corinthians 10:17)*
Thou shalt rejoice in the LORD,
and shalt glory in the Holy One of
Israel. (Isaiah 41:16)
My glory will I not give to another,
neither my praise to graven
images. (Isaiah 42:8)
13. Rejoice in the Lord
Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise
man glory in his wisdom, neither let the
mighty man glory in his might, let not the
rich man glory in his riches: But let him
that glorieth glory in this, that he
understandeth and knoweth me, that I am
the LORD which exercise lovingkindness,
judgment, and righteousness, in the
earth: for in these things I delight, saith
the LORD. (Jeremiah 9:23-24 KJV)
14. Glory = Light
As the appearance of the bow
that is in the cloud in the
day of rain, so was the
appearance of the brightness
round about. This was the
appearance of the likeness of
the glory of the LORD.
(Ezekiel 1:28)
15. Glory = Light
Then the glory of the LORD
went up from the cherub, and
stood over the threshold of the
house; and the house was
filled with the cloud, and the
court was full of the brightness
of the LORD'S glory. (Ezekiel
10:4)
16. Glory = Presence
… the house was filled with a
cloud, even the house of the
LORD; So that the priests could
not stand to minister by reason of
the cloud: for the glory of the
LORD had filled the house of
God.(2 Chronicles 5:13-14 KJV)
17. The Cloud of Presence
And the LORD went before them by
day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead
them the way; and by night in a
pillar of fire, to give them light; to go
by day and night: He took not away
the pillar of the cloud by day, nor
the pillar of fire by night, from before
the people. (Exodus 13:21-22 KJV)
18. Reason for Creation
Even every one that is called
by my name: for I have
created him for my glory,
I have formed him; yea, I have
made him. (Isaiah 43:7)
19. Created
And God said, Let us make man in
our image, after our likeness: ...
So God created man in his own
image, in the image of God created
he him; male and female created he
them. (Genesis 1:26-27)
For a man … is the image and glory
of God: (1 Corinthians 11:7 KJV)
20. White Robe
The white robe of innocence was worn
by our first parents when they were
placed by God in holy Eden. They lived in
perfect conformity to the will of God. All
the strength of their affections was given
to their heavenly Father. A beautiful soft
light, the light of God, enshrouded the
holy pair. This robe of light was a
symbol of their spiritual garments of
heavenly innocence. {COL 310.4}
21. What is Man?
What is man, that thou art
mindful of him? and the son of
man, that thou visitest him? For
thou hast made him a little lower
than the angels, and hast
crowned him with glory and
honour. (Psalms 8:4-5)
22. Covered in Glory
As man came forth from the hand of his
Creator, he was of lofty stature and
perfect symmetry. His countenance bore
the ruddy tint of health and glowed with
the light of life and joy.... The sinless
pair wore no artificial garments; they
were clothed with a covering of light
and glory, such as the angels wear. So
long as they lived in obedience to God,
this robe of light continued to enshroud
them. {PP 45.3}
23. The Problem
O ye sons of men, how
long will ye turn my glory
into shame? how long will
ye love vanity, and seek
after leasing? Selah.
(Psalms 4:2)
24. Behold, the LORD'S hand is not
shortened, that it cannot save; neither
his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But
your iniquities have separated
between you and your God, and your
sins have hid his face from you, that
that he will not hear. (Isaiah 59:1-2)
25. White Robe Taken
Had they remained true to God it
would ever have continued to
enshroud them. But when sin
entered, they severed their
connection with God, and the light
that had encircled them departed.
Naked and ashamed, they tried to
supply the place of the heavenly
garments by sewing together fig
leaves for a covering. {COL 310.4}
26. Defiled Sanctuary
Thou wast perfect in thy ways from
the day that thou wast created, till
iniquity was found in thee. (Ezekiel
28:15 KJV)
Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries
by the multitude of thine
iniquities, by the iniquity of thy
traffick; (Ezekiel 28:18 KJV)
27. Our Condition
From eternal ages it was God's
purpose that every created being,
from the bright and holy seraph to
man, should be a temple for the
indwelling of the Creator. Because
of sin, humanity ceased to be a
temple for God. Darkened and
defiled by evil, the heart of man no
longer revealed the glory of the
Divine One. {DA 161.1}
28. We should be Careful
… unless your eye is single to the
glory of God, pride will come into
your heart, self-esteem will
prevail, and you will, ere you are
aware, be walking carelessly. "Make
straight paths for your feet, lest
that which is lame be turned out of
the way." {5T 518.1}
29. And there I will meet with the
children of Israel, and [Israel] shall be
. …And
,
and will be their God. And they shall
know that I am the LORD their God,
that
: I am the LORD their
God. (Exodus 29:43-46)
30. Set Apart
But know that the LORD hath set
apart him that is godly for
himself: the LORD will hear when
I call unto him. Stand in awe,
and sin not: commune with your
own heart upon your bed, and be
still. Selah. (Psalms 4:3-4)
31. It is God’s purpose to manifest
through His people the principles of
His kingdom. That in life and
character they may reveal these
principles, He desires to separate
them from the customs, habits,
and practices of the world. He
seeks to bring them near to
Himself, that He may make known
to them His will. {6T 9.1}
32. The Grand Purpose
This was His purpose in the
deliverance of Israel from Egypt.{6T
9.2}
God desired to take His people apart
from the world and prepare them to
receive His word. From Egypt He led
them to Mount Sinai, where He
revealed to them His glory. {6T 9.3}
33. The Method
And he humbled thee, and suffered
thee to hunger, and fed thee with
manna, which thou knewest not,
neither did thy fathers know; that
he might make thee know that man
doth not live by bread only, but by
every word that proceedeth out of
the mouth of the LORD doth man
live. (Deuteronomy 8:3)
34. The Refiner
Malachi 3:1-3 – God gives a
promise that a messenger will
come and cleanse the temple
John 2:13-16 – Jesus comes and
cleanses the physical temple
structure in Jerusalem
In reality these are a symbol of
what Jesus wants to do in us
according to Isaiah 1:18-20
35. Conviction
One ray of the glory of God, one gleam
of the purity of Christ, penetrating the
soul, makes every spot of defilement
painfully distinct, and lays bare the
deformity and defects of the human
character. It makes apparent the
unhallowed desires, the infidelity of the
heart, the impurity of the lips. {SC 29.1}
36. The Remedy
The courts of the temple at Jerusalem,
filled with the tumult of unholy traffic,
represented all too truly the temple of the
heart, defiled by the presence of sensual
passion and unholy thoughts. In
cleansing the temple from the world’s
buyers and sellers, Jesus announced His
mission to cleanse the heart from the
defilement of sin,--from the earthly
desires, the selfish lusts, the evil habits,
that corrupt the soul. {DA 161.1}
37. For my name's sake will I defer mine
anger, and for my praise will I refrain
for thee, that I cut thee not off.
Behold, I have refined thee, but not
with silver; I have chosen thee in the
furnace of affliction. For mine own
sake, even for mine own sake, will I do
it: for how should my name be
polluted? and I will not give my glory
unto another. (Isaiah 48:9-11)
38. Think it Not Strange
The first epistle of Peter reveals
much about trials.
1 Peter 1:7 and also 4:12-14
reveals that trials are for our
benefit.
Additional passages that reveal this
principle are Psalm 119:67, 71;
Proverbs 3:11-12; James 1:2-4
39. Revelation 3:14-21 speaks of the:
1. Current condition of each member
that is part of the church.
2. It also reveals the remedy for the
condition.
3. Finally it reveals the reward for
those who accept the condition and
also take the remedy offered
40. White Raiment
Only the covering which Christ Himself
has provided can make us meet to appear
in God’s presence. This covering, the robe
of His own righteousness, Christ will put
upon every repenting, believing soul. "I
counsel thee," He says, "to buy of Me . . .
white raiment, that thou mayest be
clothed, and that the shame of thy
nakedness do not appear." Rev. 3:18.
{COL 311.3}
41. Jesus
And his raiment became shining,
exceeding white as snow; so as no
fuller on earth can white them.(Mark
9:3)
And as he prayed, the fashion of his
countenance was altered, and his
raiment was white and glistering.
(Luke 9:29)
42. In Christ the cry of humanity
reached the Father of infinite pity.
As a man He supplicated the
throne of God till His humanity
was charged with a heavenly
current that should connect
humanity with divinity. Through
continual communion He received
life from God, that He might impart
life to the world. His experience is
to be ours. {DA 363.1}
43. We Can Become
No human being has ever possessed so
sensitive a nature as did the sinless,
holy One of God, who stood as head and
representative of what humanity may
become through the imparting of the
divine nature. To those who believe in
Christ as their personal Saviour, he
imputes his merit and imparts his
power. {YI, August 16, 1894 par. 3}
44. Imputed Righteousness
The great work that is wrought for
the sinner who is spotted and
stained by evil is the work of
justification. By Him who speaketh
truth he is declared righteous. The
Lord imputes unto the believer the
righteousness of Christ and
pronounces him righteous before
the universe. {FLB 112.4}
45. By the life we live through the grace
of Christ, the character is formed.
The original loveliness begins to be
restored to the soul. The attributes
of the character of Christ are
imparted, and the image of the
Divine begins to shine forth.{DA
312; AH 535.2}
46. Moses
And it came to pass, when Moses came
down from mount Sinai with the two
tables of testimony in Moses' hand, when
he came down from the mount, that
Moses wist not that
while he talked with him. And
when Aaron and all the children of Israel
saw Moses, behold,
; and they were afraid to come nigh
him. (Exodus 34:29-30)
47. And all that sat in the council, looking
stedfastly on him, saw his face as it
had been the face of an angel. (Acts
6:15)
[F]or the angel of the Lord descended
from heaven, ... His countenance
was like lightning, and his raiment
white as snow: (Matthew 28:2-3)
48. But he, being full of the Holy
Ghost, looked up stedfastly into
heaven, and saw the glory of God,
and Jesus standing on the right
hand of God, And said, Behold, I
see the heavens opened, and the
Son of man standing on the right
hand of God. (Acts 7:55-56)
49. The 144k
These are they which came out of
great tribulation, and have washed
their robes, and made them white in
the blood of the Lamb. (Revelation
7:13-14)
And in their mouth was found no
guile: for they are without fault before
the throne of God. (Revelation 14:5)
50. Task of the Refined
… I the LORD have called thee in
righteousness, and will hold thine
hand, and will keep thee, and give
thee for a covenant of the people, for
a light of the Gentiles; To open the
blind eyes, to bring out the
prisoners from the prison, and
them that sit in darkness out of
the prison house. (Isaiah 42:5-7)
51. In Revelation 14:6-12 is
contained a message that must
be given with power.
In Acts 1:8 the disciples are
given a prerequisite before they
can obey the commission of
Matthew 28:18-20 and Mark
16:16
52. Mighty Cleaver of Truth
God has called His church in this
day, as He called ancient Israel, to
stand as a light in the earth. By the
mighty cleaver of truth, the
messages of the first, second, and
third angels, He has separated them
from the churches and from the
world to bring them into a sacred
nearness to Himself. {5T 455.2}
53. He has made them the depositaries of His
law and has committed to them the great
truths of prophecy for this time. Like the
holy oracles committed to ancient Israel,
these are a sacred trust to be communicated
to the world. The three angels of
Revelation 14 represent the people who
accept the light of God’s messages … {5T
455.2}
54. … accept the light of God’s messages and go
forth as His agents to sound the warning
throughout the length and breadth of the
earth. Nothing is to be permitted to hinder this
work. It is the all-important work for time;
it is to be far-reaching as eternity. The love
that Jesus manifested for the souls of men in
the sacrifice which He made for their
redemption, will actuate all His followers.
55. In order to let Jesus into our hearts, we
must stop sinning.
that we have in the Bible is that
it . The
law is far-reaching in its claims, and
. Men may wrap themselves about
with their own righteousness, they may
reach their own standard of character,
but they do not reach the standard that
God has given them in his word.– {ST
March 3, 1890 Par. 3}
56. We may measure ourselves by ourselves,
and compare ourselves among ourselves; we
may say we do as well as this one or as that
one, but the great question is, Do we meet
the claims that Heaven has upon us?
.(Psalm 119:126)
. (Psalm 19:7) It condemns every sin,
and . – {ST March 3,
1890 Par. 3}
57. Not only does it demand a correct
outward deportment, but
. “Behold,” said the
psalmist, “thou desirest truth in the
inward parts; and in the hidden part thou
shalt make me to know wisdom.” In the
light of the law, covetousness is seen to
be idolatry, lust adultery, and anger
murder. No wonder that
. – {ST March 3, 1890 Par. 3}
58. Law Described
The law of the LORD is perfect,
converting the soul: the testimony
of the LORD is sure, making wise
the simple. The statutes of the
LORD are right, rejoicing the
heart: the commandment of the
LORD is pure, enlightening the
eyes. (Psalm 19:7-8 KJV)
59. Law Described
Thy law is the truth. (Psalms
119:142)
All thy commandments are truth.
(Psalms 119:151)
I have seen an end of all
perfection: but thy
commandment is exceeding
broad. (Psalms 119:96)
61. To the church it is given "that she should
be arrayed in fine linen, clean and
white," "not having spot, or wrinkle, or
any such thing." Rev. 19:8; Eph. 5:27. The
fine linen, says the Scripture, "is the
righteousness of saints." Rev. 19:8. It is
the righteousness of Christ, His own
unblemished character, that through
faith is imparted to all who receive Him
as their personal Saviour. {COL 310.3}
62. This robe, woven in the loom of
heaven, has in it not one thread of
human devising.
. "All our
righteousness are as filthy rags."
Isa. 64:6. Everything that we of
ourselves can do is defiled by
sin. {COL 311.4}
63. But the Son of God "was manifested
to take away our sins; and in Him is
no sin." Sin is defined to be "the
transgression of the law." 1 John
3:5, 4. But Christ was obedient to
every requirement of the law. He said
of Himself, "I delight to do Thy will, O
My God; yea, Thy law is within My
heart." Ps. 40:8.. {COL 311.4}
64. The Saviour took upon Himself the
infirmities of humanity and lived a sinless
life, that men might have no fear that
because of the weakness of human nature
they could not overcome. Christ came to
make us "partakers of the divine nature,"
and His life declares that humanity,
combined with divinity, does not
commit sin. {MH 180.5}
65. , every
one who relies on
that has suffered the penalty
pronounced upon the transgressor, every
one who and in the
midst of evil given in
the Christ-life, in the
atoning sacrifice of Christ … {ST, July 23,
1902 par. 14}
66. , having escaped the corruption
that is in the world through lust.
. {ST, July 23, 1902 par.
14}
67. When on earth, He said to His disciples, "I
have kept My Father’s commandments."
John 15:10. By His perfect obedience He
has made it possible for every human
being to obey God’s commandments
68.
69.
70.
71. I heard
speak forth the truth with
great power. It had effect. Many had
been bound; some wives by their
husbands, and some children by
their parents. The honest who had
been prevented from hearing the
truth now eagerly laid hold upon it.
{EW 271.2}
72. All fear of their relatives was gone, and
the truth alone was exalted to them.
They had been hungering and thirsting
for truth; it was dearer and more
precious than life. I asked what had
made this great change. An angel
answered, "
."
{EW 271.2}
73. , and delivering the
everlasting covenant to his people.
Like peals of loudest thunder, his
words roll through the earth. The
Israel of God stand listening, with
their eyes fixed upward. - GC88
640.2
74. . The wicked cannot look
upon them. And when the blessing is
pronounced on those who have
honored God by keeping his Sabbath
holy, there is a mighty shout of
victory. - GC88 640.2
75. Shout of Victory
Soon I heard the voice of God, which
shook the heavens and the earth.
There was a mighty earthquake.
Buildings were shaken down on every
side. I then heard a triumphant
shout of victory, loud, musical, and
clear. I looked upon the company,
who, a short time before, were in such
distress and bondage. {EW 272.3}
76. Glorious Light
Their captivity was turned. A glorious
light shone upon them. How beautiful
they then looked! All marks of care and
weariness were gone, and health and
beauty were seen in every countenance.
Their enemies, the heathen around
them, fell like dead men; they could
not endure the light that shone upon
the delivered, holy ones. {EW 272.3}
77. Immortality Given
The living righteous are changed
“in a moment, in the twinkling of
an eye.”At the voice of God they
were glorified; now they are
made immortal and with the risen
saints are caught up to meet their
Lord in the air. {GC 645.1}
78. Ever before Him, Christ saw the result of
His mission. His earthly life, so full of toil
and self-sacrifice, was cheered by the
thought that He would not have all this
travail for nought. By giving His life for
the life of men, He would restore in
humanity the image of God. He would
lift us up from the dust, reshape the
character after the pattern of His own
character, and make it beautiful with
His own glory. {MH 504.2}
79. Invincible
Nothing is apparently more helpless,
yet really more invincible, than the
soul that feels its nothingness and
relies wholly on the merits of the
Saviour. God would send every angel
in heaven to the aid of such a one,
rather than allow him to be
overcome. {7T 17.3}
80. His Glory Covers
The Lord will work with every soul
who will yield heart and mind to His
control. To all who will be led by the
Spirit, God will impart His
righteousness. His glory will be their
front guard and their rereward.
{8MR 217.2}
Editor's Notes
Glory is Character.
The parallel phrases indicate that glory also refers to praise.
These verses in Jeremiah make it clear that we cannot praise God correctly if we don’t give the correct appreciation to His character.
Also look at Psalms 144:3 and Job 7:17-18 Note as well that God is robed in light according to 1 Timothy 6:16 and Psalm 104:1-4
The fact that the sanctuary has been defiled by sin means that the one of two things will happen. Either the sanctuary will be cleansed or the sanctuary will be destroyed. See 1 Corinthians 3:17
Note this thought is also conveyed in 1 Corinthians 3:16 and 6:19. Our bodies are God’s temple when we sinned “the glory of God departed” and indeed our bodies were left desolate.
Romans 3:23 through sin we have fallen short of God’s glory
Amidst the fact that we have been defiled by sin it is still God’s desire to reveal His character to us and in us.
The Hebrew word used for “set apart” only occurs six other places in scripture. Four of those places are in the book of Exodus. He three first times are in relation to the seven last plagues in which God caused these plagues to only affect the Egyptians while the Israelites were not affected. The final use of the Hebrew word is found in Psalms in 139:14 where it is translated “wonderfully made”.
In Egypt it was God who separated Israel from among the Egyptians so that He could reveal his glory to them and then reveal His glory through them to the world.
By carrying Israel through trying circumstances God revealed to His people His power and glory and also the true state of their mind and hearts.
When the glory of God shines into hearts it reveals in a marked manner that we are in need of a Saviour. This is the same effect that the searching eyes of Jesus had on those Jews who filled with pride looked into his eyes.
Note this thought is also conveyed in 1 Corinthians 3:16 and 6:19. Our bodies
The fiery trials are needed to prepare us for the reception into glory. Note also the exhortation found in various passages of scripture that speak to the necessity of trials to bring us closer to God. In fact trials are for the purpose of bringing us to perfection.
Special note here is that on this point of trials Revelation 3:18; 7:14 and 14:12 all find a common adhesive. Furnace of affliction; tribulation and patience is truly exercised in tribulation.
So just
Having made us righteous through the imputed righteousness of Christ, God pronounces us just, and treats us as just. {FLB 112.6}
Moses was a man of like passions as we are and was privileged to behold the glory of God and have that glory reflected in his countenance. See 2 Corinthians 3:7
Matthew 5:14-16 and Mark 16:16
Matthew 5:14-16 and Mark 16:16
Matthew 5:14-16 and Mark 16:16
John 17:17 is very pertinent here
Note also the educative power of the law as outlined in Psalms 119:97-100
A wedding cannot go forward unless both the bride and the groom are dressed in their pre-planned wedding garments. Interestingly enough the wedding ceremony begins with the groom standing at the altar waiting patiently for the bride to walk up the aisle arrayed in her marriage dress.
Isaiah 54:17 describes the origin but Revelation 19:8 describes its location at the time of the second coming. Not only will it be Christ’s character but this will be the character of the faithful when the seven last plagues are falling.
Note the magnificent quoting of scripture that the prophetess employs in these passages
Our task is simply to submit to Christ that He can transform us.
2 Peter 1:4
So if God removes that which drove His presence from us in the first place what does that mean for us.
Romans 13:11-14
Colossians 3
Note:Romans 13:12 let us put on the armour of light.
Note:Romans 13:12 let us put on the armour of light.
Isaiah 4:5
for upon all the glory shall be a defence. {upon all: or, above all} {defence: Heb. covering}
