INTRODUCTION:
Established in 2015, The Herman Bailey Vocational Training Institute (HBVTI) is an educational and social advocacy, non-profit Organization
whose mission is to address the problematic issue of homelessness in Houston - Harris County, Texas. HBVTI pursues this mission through being
an advocate for eradicating homelessness; enhancing public awareness about the plight of being homeless; serving and giving back to the
community; and providing cost-free accredited vocational training to vetted homeless individuals and unemployed veterans so they may
become adept and gainfully employed in the Remodeling or other industry of the Construction sector in our market. HBVTI envisions being a key
contributor to eradicating homelessness and enhancing the economic success enjoyed in our market.
GENERAL SUMMARY:
This is a voluntary role that works in conjunction with the Executive Director. In general, the Board of Directors will support the mission and
work of The Herman Bailey Vocational Training Institute (HBVTI). All Board Members shall provide mission-based leadership and strategic
governance. While day-to-day operations of The Herman Bailey Vocational Training Institute (HBVTI) are led by the Executive Director, the
relationship between Board Members and the Executive Director is that of a partnership. The appropriate involvement of Board Members is
both critical and expected for achieving Organizational goals and objectives. Board Members shall serve one (1), two (2), or three (3) year
staggered terms with eligibility for re-appointment for one additional staggered term.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 Actively participates in the overall long-term strategic planning process and assists in implementing and monitoring the Organization’s
strategic plans including an initiative geared toward operational excellence.
 Serves as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director; ensures the moral and professional support needed to further Organizational goals.
 Ensures the Organization’s adherence to ethical norms and legal, statutory, or regulatory standards.
 Reviews outcomes and metrics created by the Organization for evaluating its impact and measuring its performance.
 Assists with determining which programs and services are consistent with the Organization's mission and monitors their efficiency and
effectiveness in meeting the needs of our clients.
 Responsible for securing adequate resources needed to empower the Organization to fulfill all the promise of its mission.
 Attends and partakes in quarterly board meetings and committee meetings which will be held in coordination with full board meetings;
serves on committees and task forces while taking on special roles and assignments; such Board Chair, Secretary, or Treasurer.
 Assists with developing the annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions while ensuring that proper financial controls are
in place.
 Enhances the Organization’s public standing by clearly articulating the Organization’s mission, accomplishments, and goals to the general
public and stakeholder’s while garnering support from the community and personal network resources.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS:
This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about The Herman Bailey Vocational Training Institute’s (HBVTI) mission
and who has a successful, proven track record of board leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business,
government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. A Board Member’s accomplishments will allow them to attract other well-qualified, high-
performing Board Members. Interested, qualified candidates should submit their professional credentials for consideration. Service on The
Herman Bailey Vocational Training Institute’s (HBVTI) Board of Directors is strictly voluntary and without remuneration, except for
administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties.
Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
 Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the
nonprofit sector.
 A commitment to and understanding of The Herman Bailey Vocational Training Institute (HBVTI) clients, preferably based on experience.
 Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus
among diverse individuals.
 Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for genuinely improving the lives of The Herman Bailey Vocational Training
Institute’s (HBVTI) clients.
