Editor's Notes

  1. Think about it…this will not happen again in your lifetime or anyone you know. The organization that started it all, that led to your club’s existence is 100 years old. That’s something to celebrate! You already have a hook and a theme to plan an event around and get media coverage – it’s kind of a no-brainer. We say how hard it is to talk about what we do, this is easy – we are celebrating 100 years of community service. Then segue into how long your club has been serving the community and then your projects, etc. Easy conversation starter! Make sure to invite past members to any event you plan. Engage the community or other service clubs to work with you. This will help spread the word of Exchange throughout the community and get more people talking about you! And we all know how you all like to party!
  2. Invite city officials and other community leaders, make it big, fancy and expensive. Wear formal clothes, make it a 1911 costume themed ball, etc. Have family friendly games, contests, food, music, entertainment, etc. This could be more of an evening adult-themed event with good food and alcohol. Get the whole community involved and end it with a hotdog and lemonade lunch. Or a 100 mile bike rally or a 100 meter dash contest or 100 person conga line…are you getting the idea?
  3. Or 100 boxes of pasta or 100 cans of tuna and 100 paper plates, 100 gallons of ice cream …you get the idea Or 100 pairs of boots or shoes or 100 hats or 100 pairs of gloves, you’re getting this right? Do this for 100 days and donate the money to a local center or other worthwhile cause. Or donate $100 to 100 different causes in your community You can clean up the park, donate and plant flowers, feed the firemen, clean up graffiti, street clean ups, offer to repair playground equipment, build an Exchange park shelter, donate park or street benches, clean up or spruce up bus stops, volunteer at you local library, etc. Work with the city and a local nursery for the best trees in your area and locations.
  4. Talk about it. Wear 100 th anniversary clothing or any Exchange wear This should be easy to write, as you already have a great hook and theme (100 years). Thank the community for the years you’ve been there, talk about all the projects your club has done and how your organization is celebrating 100 years of service in America. This is a sure fire way to get some media attention! It ain’t pretty but it works. They can be an honorary chair for a race, master of ceremonies, special guest or speaker, or other high-profile role, as long as they are involved, you will probably get media coverage. Pony up the money and pay for some coverage like everyone else. Free is great, but sometime you have to spend money to make money (or get noticed). The more people involved, the more people talking about your event and Exchange. For a big event bring in community volunteers to share the work and the spotlight. The more people your project or event affects the more people learn about and talk about Exchange and your club. If you donate to a high profile cause or group, it will attract more media attention than a project with limited impact.
  5. Sounds simple right? So many clubs do not do this, then their event gets big and popular and no one knows it is an Exchange event. So, the EXCHANGE Club pig roast. The EXCHANGE Club bike rally. The EXCHANGE Club 1911 Gala. The EXCHANGE Club community Shelter. The EXCHANGE Club Centennial Community Garden. Getting the idea? You have a perfect hook, a perfect excuse to get publicity, the perfect theme to build on, USE IT! You say no one knows who we are…so, tell them! You have the perfect vehicle at your disposal for this for one year only – use it! Dress alike whenever you do a project. Tell people by sending a letter to the editor. Ask to be interviewed on a local TV station – you DO have something to say. Do something! Big or small, do not let this opportunity slip by. Encourage your clubs to do something. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. For questions from the media, the public, volunteers, anyone! Know what you’re going to say. Be proud of being a part of 100 years of service to America.
