USDRD Case Study
The Problem
In 1940, agriculture-related industries
contributed 10% to the US Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) output and supported 20% of the
labor force. In 2014, agriculture-related
industries contributed 1% to the US GDP output
and supported 2% of the labor force. Such a
drastic decline in the US agriculture industry has
created vast economic inequality and social
disparities between rural and urban America.
Additionally, this decline has increased our
reliance on agricultural imports, inherently forcing
nutritional and health risks on US consumers.

How we Understand the Problem
Our understanding of the Situation:
❖ Agriculture is contributing to less of the US GDP
❖ Less people are working in the agriculture industry
❖ Have to find a way to make farmers more
productive and also encourage more people to work
in the agriculture industry.

How we Approach the Problem
❖ Conduct a Simple Random Sample (SRS) to rural farm
owners all over the country
❖ Send mail to at least 100 farm owners to get a normal
distribution
❖ Collect the data from the participants and analyze the data
using Excel to let farmers know how they are doing and how
they can improve
❖ Some of the data topics will include what section of the
farm, what time of year, and what crops are most
profitable. Also it will include things like how much water,
sunlight the plants are getting, and sales of the crop per
season

process queries when a lot of farmers are online.

using the technology as well. Also we will build a
community which can help with questions related

❖ Agile Development will be necessary with use of this app
because the technology will be built in phases and
continuous renewal of system is necessary. We will
make this technology user - friendly. We will involve the
users and show them the prototypes.
❖ The data will be largely unstructured so it may hard to
extract large sets of data. OLTP will be converted to
OLAP. There will be different databases for collecting
data related to all the areas of the mobile app and those
databases will feed into a central database which will
organize and process all the individual sets of data.
