** low data reliability: The decision for low data reliability means that no RAID systems are
considered. In order to restore the system after an HDD failure, it is essential to
implement a comprehensive backup strategy. This backup strategy must
include image creation, full database backups and segment backups on a
regular basis. Please consider this note in case of using the recommended
hardware as basis for the Process Historian.

2. 4. General recommendations
CPU Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2643v4
(6C/12T, 3.40 GHz, TLC: 20 MB, Turbo: 3.60 GHz, 9.6 GT/s,
Mem bus: 2,400 MHz, 135 W, AVX Base 2.80 GHz, AVX Turbo 3.60 GHz)
Comparable or better CPU
RAM *** 64 GB DDR4-2400 ECC
HDD Content Disk space RAID Hard disks
system 600 GB - 600 GB
transaction log * 1800 GB RAID 1 2x 1800 GB
common data 300 GB - 300 GB
alarms 300 GB - 300 GB
tags (data group 0) 1200 GB - 1200 GB
Please note: It is strongly recommended to use hard disk drives (HDDs) with SAS, 12 GBit/s, 10K
and 2.5 inch. It is also allowed to use SSDs which provides more read/write
performance.
* transaction log: The experience shows that a 1800 GB partition is sufficient to store the transaction
log for approx. 26 days in the case of a redundancy failure.
*** RAM: The amount of memory is the minimum requirement. It is allowed to use more
memory for RAM which provides more performance.
Number of HDDs: Your current configuration includes 6 HDDs. Please ensure that your hardware
platform can handle this amout of HDDs.
Segment backups
In order to avoid the disk filling up to its limit, older database segments need to be deleted to continue
storing data. Therefore we recommend using the automatic segment backup scheduler function. We
recommend using a dedicated iSCSI Network Attached Storage (NAS) to store segment backups.
Database backups
For a non-redundant Process Historian we recommend using the automatic database backup function. We
recommend using a dedicated iSCSI Network Attached Storage (NAS) to store database backups.
Virtualization
Regardless whether the Process Historian is running in a virtual environment or on a real hardware, we
recommend configuring the same hardware setup. That means the virtual machine must be comparable
regarding processor performance, processor kernels, RAM, disk capacity and amount of RAID systems
used to store the database. To ensure a high read/write performance, the Process Historian database is
distributed over a set of RAID systems. This database distribution must be realized in the virtual
environment as well. All used resources like processor kernels, RAM and RAID systems are exclusively
used from the virtual machine. Therefore, in most cases, a virtualization of a Process Historian does not
make much sense.
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
In rare cases a power failure can damage the SQL Server database of the Process Historian. This can lead
to a full data loss. Therefore we highly recommend using an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for the
Process Historian.
SIMATIC BATCH
Note is only valid for PH/IS Version < 2014 SP2 + Upd1:
If the Process Historian and the Information Server are not executed on the same machine, the print
preview functionality doesn’t work in the BATCH Control Center. This is a system behavior. If the Process
Historian and the Information Server are executed on different machines, the batch protocol can only be

generated by means of the Information Server.
Hardware order
Using a SIEMENS Industry PC:
The IPC 847D can be ordered out of the PCS 7 catalog.
Using high-performant server hardware:
The Siemens department DF CS PA PFM in Karlsruhe, Germany, offers so-called SIDSI services.
('SIMATIC DCS / SCADA Infrastructure')
These services include a preconfigured PH/IS system according to the project specific requirements.
The system itself consists of the powerful hardware platform, the Microsoft Windows Server installation and
license as well as the SIMATIC software installation and database configuration.
The SIMATIC software licenses for PH/IS are not included and must be obtained separately by standard
order means.
Detailed information can be found here: https://siemens.com/sidsi
Using any other comparable server hardware:
It is also possible to use comparable server hardware from other vendors. But the server must be
comparable regarding the processor performance, processor kernels, RAM, disk capacity, operating
system and amount of RAID systems used to store the database.
