• Surveillance footage later showed us that our students saw a
gunman, with the gun in his hand in the residential dorm Thursday
night.
• They were visibly afraid, yet, No one called TSUPD.
• In speaking to our students in a later forum, a young lady said she
did in fact call.
• However, we were not able to verify that.

WAIT!
Let’s back up. As tragic and unprecedented
as these events were, there was something else
taking place that also landing us in the
“spotlight”.
7. #MYCAMPUSMYSAFETY
• Everyone didn’t agree with the methods of the students behind
#TakeBackTxSU.
• It drew negative attention from the media and most outside
interest in general.
• BUT…………
8. #MYCAMPUSMYSAFETY
• NO ONE COULD DISPUTE THE VALIDITY OF THE ISSUES RAISED BY
OUR STUDENTS.
• There were some serious issues on our beloved campus that were in
fact being overlooked, and ignored.
• The students wanted answers and change.
• And what a change…..
9. #MYCAMPUSMYSAFETY
• I created #mycampusmysafety to empower our students to
become ambassadors and advocates for their safety on their
campus.
• The students stood up for changes to be made for the better
with regard to their Higher Ed experience. #TakeBackTxSU
• I wanted them to take that stance when it comes to their
safety.
• We encourage our campus community daily to partner with us
in our efforts to keep everyone safe.
12. #MYCAMPUSMYSAFETY
• The shootings that happened during the week of October involved
our students and non-students.
• We want our students to limit bringing that outside element to our
campus.
• I also created a “Tip Line” for students with concerns for
anonymity.
• I assisted our students in creating a music video by our students,
for our students to help student engagement and humanize our
Police Officers.
• When no one called us to report a gunman walking the housing
complex, we knew there was a serious disconnect.
