art of what makes Texas
A&M’s John Chavis such a
great defensive coordina-
tor is timing, knowing when
to blitz or fall
back in cover-
age. He’s also
had a knack for
being at the right
school at the right
time, maybe never more so than now
after leaving Louisiana State in the
offseason.
LSU head coach Les Miles, who
couldn’t convince Chavis from jumping
ship, might be about to walk the plank,
based on reports out of Baton Rouge,
Louisiana. Some say Miles will be fired
regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s
Southeastern Conference regular-season
finale between the Aggies (8-3, 4-3)
and Tigers (7-3, 4-3).
Miles said on Wednesday’s SEC
teleconference that it’s business as
usual and he hasn’t discussed his future
with athletic director Joe Alleva.
“I’m going to do my job,” Miles said. “I’m
going to look at this opponent. I’m
going to attack this opponent.
That’s all I’m doing.”
Miles has done well at-
tacking A&M, going 4-0
against the Aggies while at
LSU. He forged that perfect
record in part because of
Chavis, whose Tiger defens-
es held the Aggies to 17.5 points
per game over the four games.
Now Chavis has a chance to help extend
Miles’ three-game losing streak, his longest
in 11 seasons at LSU.

That’s what most fans
and media members say
when describing the Texas
A&M junior wide receiver.
But they’re missing a word
between the “scores” and
“touchdowns”.

A
ggie fans drew anoth-
er reminder this week
that they have no true
rival anymore, maybe the
biggest downer for the school
since joining the Southeast-
ern Conference. Sure, Texas
A&M has a long history with
Arkansas and Louisiana
State, and it doesn’t get much
better than playing Alabama,
but none of those are A&M’s
rival.
Proximity and history
can lead you to believe A&M
and LSU are rivals. After
all, they’re within relatively
easy driving distance of each
other, and they’ve met 53
times on the football field.
The SEC also helped the
series by moving the annual Eagle photo by Sam Craft
