PROFIBUS
2
Profibus(Process Field Bus) is a standard for
fieldbus communication in automation sector
and was first promoted in 1989 by BMBF
(German department of education and
research) and then used by SIEMENS.
Profibus is openly published as part of
IEC61158.
Profibus IS used in Industrial communications
like PLC, SCADA, HMI and many more other
automation device.

TYPES 0F PROFIBUS
1 . PROFIBUS DP(Decentralized Peripheral)
PROFIBUS DP (Decentralized peripherals) is used to
operate sensors and actuator via a centralized
controller in production(factory) automation
application.
Its cable length varies from 100m to 1200m and
transmission rate is 12Mb/s - 9.6kb/s.
No. of devices that can be connected -126 with 4 repeaters.
It requires 24V dc supply.
2 . PROFIBUS PA(Process Automation)
PROFIBUS PA(Process automation) is used to monitor
measuring equipment via a process control system in
process automation applications.
Its cable length is 1900m and transmission rate is
31.25kb/s.
No. of devices that can be connected -32.
It requires upto 0.5A/segment.

MERITS AND DEMERITS
5
MERITS
Cost reduction: Minimization of total cost of ownership
through uniform fieldbus communication in all areas of the
production process.
Increased availability and performance.
Redundancy and comprehensive online diagnostics.
Flexibility and investment safe guarding.
Protection of Man and Machine.
Easy installation.
DEMERITS
If there is a problem in the transmission link then the data
from all the connected devices would be lost.
And if the above mentioned problem is to be rectified then
it is necessary to use more than one transmission link which
in turn increases the cost

DEVICENET
DeviceNet is an application-level protocol used in the
automation environment.
It is a communication tool that allows you to logically talk
between a PLC and many control devices such as motor,
conveyor, flowmeter, level sensors etc.
Instead of the PLC talking directly to the discrete input-
output modules, it talks via a devicenet scanner .
DeviceNet follows the open system interconnection or OSI
model.

ARCHITECTURE
Allows three bit rates: 125 Kb/s, 250 Kb/s and 500 Kb/s.
Flat cable network can be used.
Has duplicate node address detection function.
Single network can have up to 64 nodes while usually the
default nodes are 63.
Supports master-slave and end-to-end communication
architecture.
Multiple network allows a single master function.
Immune against noise signals.
KEY BENEFITS
Reduced Wiring and Installation Cost.
Reduced Start-Up Time.
Reduced Downtime.
Rapid Troubleshooting Removal, insertion and replacement
of devices on the network under power.
Interchangeability of devices from multiple vendors.
Configuration of devices over the network (set-up or
runtime).
