Understanding the Grassroots Dynamics of Slums in Nairobi: The Dilemma of Kib...
A lot of literature on urban development in developing countries has entirely focused on the nexus between rapid urbanization, Gross Geographic Product (GGP) and poverty growth with little research that demonstrates what this impacts on urban sustainability especially with increasing slums in rapidly urbanizing African countries. Available research has focused entirely on increasing poverty level in urban Africa and its mitigation without a clear direction on what this means to slums improvement and urban sustainability. This papers aims to give a conceptual analysis that will help to understand the dynamics of urban sustainability and slums development. The historical perspectives and current realities of Kibera slums in Nairobi are reviewed.

Africa is rapidly urbanizing, with around 40% of Africans currently living in cities. Managing urban growth is one of the most important challenges for development. While cities offer economic opportunities, current socioeconomic conditions in African cities make them uniquely unequal. Traditional approaches to development and infrastructure will not be sufficient without an integrated strategy that considers people, processes, and technology. The document proposes that the African Ideas Smart City Connectivity Framework shows potential for providing this needed integration across societies to address issues like education, employment, housing, and healthcare through connected infrastructure, platforms, citizens, and data analytics.
When Tech meets Culture: perspectives from Africa
ABSTRACT: This talk introduces some of the problematics about International Development Aid going through the highlights of my work experience as ICT manager in an international development project in Sierra Leone. Moreover, it will give different perspectives about Africa compared to the one usually portrayed by media, highlighting some success stories of African innovations and discussing the role of technology in tackling some of the future African continent’s challenges.
BIO: Luca Cimonetti worked as software engineer in several European countries: Austria, Netherlands and France. Following my interest for ICT4D, I recently worked as ICT manager in an international development project in Sierra Leone with the aim of building a national emergency medical service. I am currently working as freelance web developer based in Trento.

Venture capital investment in Africa's e-economy has grown from $200 million in 2015 to $2 billion in 2019. If the digital economy is fully leveraged, the World Economic Forum estimates it could create 150 million new jobs for African youth.

The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.

Combined Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) Vessel List.
The best available, up-to-date information on all fishing and related vessels that appear on the illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing vessel lists published by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) and related organisations. The aim of the site is to improve the effectiveness of the original IUU lists as a tool for a wide variety of stakeholders to better understand and combat illegal fishing and broader fisheries crime.
To date, the following regional organisations maintain or share lists of vessels that have been found to carry out or support IUU fishing within their own or adjacent convention areas and/or species of competence:
Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)
Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT)
General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM)
Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC)
International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT)
Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)
Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO)
North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC)
North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC)
South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO)
South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO)
Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA)
Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC)
The Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List merges all these sources into one list that provides a single reference point to identify whether a vessel is currently IUU listed. Vessels that have been IUU listed in the past and subsequently delisted (for example because of a change in ownership, or because the vessel is no longer in service) are also retained on the site, so that the site contains a full historic record of IUU listed fishing vessels.
Unlike the IUU lists published on individual RFMO websites, which may update vessel details infrequently or not at all, the Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List is kept up to date with the best available information regarding changes to vessel identity, flag state, ownership, location, and operations.
