GROWTH
LEADERSHIP
Rick Black is recognized for his leadership in environmental management, group
development, market growth, and mentoring of a new generation of practioners. Rick
has nearly 30 years of management and leadership through technical excellence.
• As a young staff ecologist (Woodward-Clyde Consultants), moved from
Houston, TX to Salt Lake City, UT, to help open an office and a new
geography; Rick brought in new clients to this growing office.
• Recruited from WCC to open a new office and a new geography for ep&t.
As office manager, Rick hired two employees and brought enough
business to operating in the black for the two years; growing the revenue.
• Michael Baker recruited Rick to open and manage a NEPA department. In
the space of three years, Rick grew the group to 8 people, and expanded
the services to include science, ecology and impact analyses. Baker
reached out and provided services to clients all over the west.
• As the Biology lead for HDR, Rick started by hiring, eventually managing a
group of 5-8 and national teams of up to 30 professionals. Rick was
awarded with a prestigious national team building award.
• Jacobs engineering hired Rick to start and manage a NEPA group. Rick
managed 10-12 people in the Salt Lake office and eventually grew the
group to hire a new Transportation NEPA manager so he could focus on
Ecological Services from the Pacific NW to Texas.
• As an ENVIRON employee, Rick opened the Salt Lake office, acting as the
general contractor for the new space as it was developed and built. Rick
brought a new market share to ENVIORN in the terrestrial sciences. The
office grew to 5 people, including practices from industrial wastewater, to
air, to groundwater contamination clean-up services.
• Currently Rick has opened the Salt Lake City office for Great Ecology and
is working to expanding the office and the services offered by Great
Ecology to include active ‘boots on the ground’ for existing clients. In the
three short months here, Rick has brought two new clients to Great
Ecology and has integrated into large confidential projects.
Rick has led and managed groups for several environmental companies. He has also
served in various roles with professional societies. Rick has additionally led the way in
serving clients in a myriad of technical and policy related fields in the energy
development and transmission fields, oil and gas community, mining, transportation,
army, and various other public and private industries. Rick has also been innovative
and pushed the application of science into policy and impact analysis in the
development and application of state-of-the-art biological and ecological indices to
evaluate impacts to terrestrial systems from private and public development projects
and army activities.
• As the Biology Group lead for HDR, Rick developed a grass roots
biology/ecology group across the entire firm, totaling well over 100
professionals, giving members of the group a career path, and a
mechanism to integrate across all geographies and grow individual
resumes.
• During his time with Jacobs engineering, Rick managed a “Beyond Zero”
program for the region and reached past health and safety to center on
employee retention and employee satisfaction. Rick also participated in an
elite national training program wherein he worked directly with the CEO and
the upper VPs to help shape a new program for the firm.
