2. Story
I plan to tell the story of my series in a mildly anarchic order. Feeding
the audience information out of order in order to keep them guessing
about the different aspects of the story. So some of the series will be
non-linear. Similar to films like Memento(2000) directed by
Christopher Nolan. In which the structure of the entire story is told on
reverse. I.e. the story begins at the end of the characters journeys and
ends at the start. With the entire film being told in backwards order.
Though my own series will not be non-linear to this extent. Instead
more akin to another Christopher Nolan film; Inception(2010) in which
the film starts with the ending scene, then shows how the characters
got to where they are, with flashbacks fed to the audience throughout
to add context. It is this brand of storytelling that is a Trademark of
Christopher Nolan. It is also a good base for how I would like to tell
my own story across the series.
3. Inspiration: Christopher
Nolan
Christopher Nolan has a very grand-scale way of going about
his films. Often using techniques like a large, booming
soundtrack and outside the box cinematography to give the
audience a sense of scope in his projects. This works to a
wonderful augmenting effect in his larger films, like The Dark
Knight and Inception, but it also serves as a fine way of adding
a feel of importance to his smaller scale films. Like Memento.
Despite the story and consequences of Memento affecting a
relatively small pool of people. The way the film is shot and
presented gives the film much more weight. This is an element I
would love to introduce in my own series. As I won’t have the
budget for a grand scale story so the soundtrack and
cinematography will have to be unique to set the project apart.
4. Film theory: Anachronic
order
Anachronic order is the film theory that the story order and the
chronological order of a film are not related at all. “Either the
storyline jumps back and forth along the timeline, or portions of
the story are re-told along a period of time already covered” A
simple way of employing this technique is telling the same story
several times from the viewpoint of different characters. Since
my work will be an ensemble piece. I think this a great
opportunity to add some rewatch value to my work. It also
works well as a storytelling device for a webseries, since it can
make the series enigmatic enough to make the audience want to
watch the next episode. Which is obviously one of the large
goals when making a series.
5. Film Theory: Sonic
Storytelling
“In film, soundtrack is just as important as visuals for telling the story – it
helps to fully convey the intended emotion of a scene, establish continuity and
add momentum.”
When resources are scarce. Music is an excellent way to enhance and add to
the story being told on screen. Oftentimes, a certain character in media will
have a theme dedicated to them. Announcing their presence and highlighting
their personality through the tone of the music. This is known as a “Leitmotif”
– or a piece of music that is the theme tune for a character.
This is a masterful way of storytelling as the audience often doesn’t even
notice the musical themes prevalent around a certain character but it can help
a lot to define who that character is. So scoring the music around the
characters in my webseries is very important to me. And creating an original
individual theme for each character is a good way to go.
