3. Innovations.
One great thing that can happen in any
society is when people acquire new ideas
and change the way they do something.
These are called innovations; and these
may take the following forms:
New technology.
This is a major source of social change.
However, it is important to note that new
technology populations. Bigger
populations require new models of
democracy such as representative
government. Likewise, simple growth of
cetizens will surely produce great social
change.
4. New ideas.
People in advanced industrial societies
are experiencing a shift of values that
involves a new definition of progress.
according to inglehart. "highly developed
countries are moving into a era of post
materialism: our present emphasis of
consumption of goods and services is
giving way to an emphasis on the quality
of a human life. while traditional societies
have mostly been comcerned with
satisfying economic wants and assuring
physical securities against enemies. the
post materialist society will largely
concern itself with question of
relativism, such a benifits of continued
economic growth and the relative cost of
the polluted inviroments."
5. Diffusion.
Human beings are in constant move,
making a totally isolated society
extremely rare. Direct or indirect contact
between members of two different
cultures often leads to change in one or
both cultures. The process by which this
change comes about is called diffusion,
because it entails a gradual
dissemination of cultural traits.
Fotential agents of diffusion include
missionaries, soldiers, migrants, traders,
peace corps volunteers, exchange
students, and professionals. The degree
of change caused by diffusion acntually
varies.
6. The degree of change caused by
diffusion acntually varies. More rapid
progress has been possible because
societies borrow innovations from each
other. This transfer of innovations also
refers to diffusion, the blending of cultural
patterns from different societies.
New culture.
Not only machine and materials
inventions changes the world. Beliefs
and values can also produce dramatic
social change.
In western societies, rapid technological
changes were stimulated by acceptance
of the ideas of progress.
7. New social structures.
New forms of social structures can also
be the result of invention. Since roles are
a very basic social structure, changes in
roles and the creation of a new roles
often cause other social changes. For
instance, changes in sex roles stimulates
many changes. The presence of a
working mother certainly causes new
social structures.
8. Conflicts.
Innovations is not the only one major
internal source of change. Much change
is produced by conflicts among groups
within a society. In amerika, the Civil
Rights movement of the 1950's and
1960's not only removed many barriers
to black participation in the mainstream
of American society but also changed
many aspects of society as well.
9. Growth.
In any society, population growth has
become a major engine driving modern
social change. Large population present
new problems that demand new modes
of social organizations. For instance,
small populations may allow direct
participation in a democracy in which all
citizens may participate in decision-
making.
