It has various papillae (bumps) that house taste buds - circumvallate papillae are the largest visible at the back of the tongue, foliate papillae are on the sides, and filiform papillae cover the top in many projections. The tongue is innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve and enables the perception of the five basic tastes.

Apply calamine or lotion to suppress the itching.
