GUIDE QUESTIONS:
 What are the similarities and differences you observed from the
traits you have to other people in your society?
 What do you think are the factors why there are differences and
similarities of human being?
 Do you think this is normal? Why or why not?
HUMAN CULTURAL VARIATION
 There are two primary factors that shape the behavior of
human groups. These are the environment and history.
The behavior which serves as an adaptive tool for the
varied stimuli projected by the environment, is influenced
by beliefs, practices, and possessions. The set of behavior
from human traditions are came from a constant practice
that will passed from generation to the next generations.
CULTURAL VARIATIONS
 established when a group of human being experiences
differing environmental conditions.
 Example of which is the clothing of the people in Baguio
and from Pangasinan. As we observed people from upland
always wearing a thick clothing than us from lowlanders
NATIONALITY AND ETHNICITY
 The identity that is tied to being part of a nation or
country – a ‘’group of people who share the same history,
traditions and language’’ and who inhabits in a particular
territory delineated by a political border and
controlled by the government is called Nationality.
ETHNICITY
 Ethnic Groups within the nation are the smaller cultural
groups that share specific environments, traditions, and
histories that are not necessarily subscribed by the
mainstream culture.
SOCIAL DIFFERENCES
 The following are the example of social differences and
their meaning:
 Gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors,
activities and attributes that a given society considers
appropriate for men and women
SOCIAL DIFFERENCES
 Sex is a biological characteristic of human such as male or female.
 *Types of Gender
 Heterosexual. A person with this gender is inclined to be sexually attracted to a person of
the opposite sex.
 Homosexual. A person that is sexually attracted to the same sex.
 Gay- romantically and sexually attracted to male.
Lesbian - romantically and sexually attracted to female.
 Bisexual. Individuals who are attracted to the opposite sex.
 b.6. Asexual. A totally incapable of being attracted to any sex.
 b.7. Polysexual. Attracted to multiple types of gender identity.
 b.8. Pansexual. Accommodates all types of gender
TRANSGENDER
 people whose gender identities do not match on their biological
identity as male or female
 These people classify themselves as transgender. Their sexual
orientation is not related to their genital, which allow them to
identify with other type of gender. Under this category are people
who allow themselves as transsexual. These individuals believe that
the discord between their internal gender and the gender role that
they have to perform can be addressed through medical sexual
reassignment
Socioeconomic Class
 Global South. The developing countries that perceive poverty.
 Global North. The developed countries and industrialized
nations.
 The typical determinants of one’s social status includes income,
value of assets and savings, cultural interest and hobbies and
economic status of his or her peers and relatives.
POLITICAL IDENTITY
 refers to the set of attitudes and practices that an
individual adheres to in relation to the political
systems and actors within his or her society
RELIGION
 The belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling
power especially a personal God or Gods.
 Monotheistic believing in the existence of one God.
 Polytheistic believing in the existence of multiple Gods.
SOCIAL VARIATION
 The variation in human conditions promotes
diversity and plurality in cultural traditions. This
could lead to discrimination and ostracism
ETHNOCENTRIC
 Is a perspective that promotes an individual’s culture as
the most efficient and superior hence the individual who
exhibit ethnocentrism feels that his or her culture is the
most appropriate as compared to other cultures.
CULTURAL RELATIVISM
 This promotes the perspective that cultures must be understood in
the context of their locality. Using this perspective makes you
tolerant of the differing attitudes and practices of others.
 *The term race was one of the social variations of the people and a
human classification that was based on observable traits and
characteristics, especially 17th to 19th century.
REFLECTION!
 One of the reasons why we have uniqueness from each
other and the reason why discrimination happens is
because of the term “GENDER”. Issues about gender is one
of the most popular topics to be discussed. Now as a
member of the society, what are the things you notice
about gender issues in your everyday life, and how you
manage to correct the mistreatment that you’ve
experienced or witness?
 What if there is no law about gender equality? What do
you think will happen?
 Identify at least 3 examples of things that shows
gender equality in your everyday life.
