This document discusses the history of Oak Island in Nova Scotia and the many attempts over 200 years to locate buried treasure that is said to exist on the island. It references discoveries made by the Oak Island Treasure Company and interests in solving the island's mysteries even by former US President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It questions whether the legendary bounty hidden on Oak Island will ever be found.
www.oakislandmoneypit.comDaniel McGinnis, along with his friends John Smith and Anthony Vaughn, discovered a mysterious pit the Summer of 1795 (Oak island money pit, 2014).

archaeologynewsnetwork.blogspot.comLocated off the shores of Nova Scotia, along Canada’s Atlantic coast, Oak Island is one of approximately 360 islands dotting Mahone Bay. The mere 140 acre island, however, holds significant historical importance (Oak island money pit, 2014).

www.boston.comThe years between 1690 and 1730 are known as the “Golden Age of Piracy”- Just 65 years before Daniel McGinnis happened upon Oak Island (Strochlic, 2014). The infamous pirate ,Captain William Kidd, had even admitted to burying a wealth of treasure in the area surrounding Nova Scotia (Oak island money pit, 2014).

www.oakislandtreasure.co.ukThis was enough evidence for Daniel to gather his two friends and begin excavating the area with hopes to discover treasure. They dug continuously and only found layers of dirt, and wooden platforms securing the tunnel’s structure at every 10 foot interval. Eventually the three boys stopped work until they could find more assistance (Nickell, 2000).

www.timeanddate.comA man named SimeonLynds, from the town of Onslow, formed a treasure hunting consortium called the Onslow Company. With funding and more manpower, the operation could continue (Oak island money pit, 2014).

It is said to read, “Fourty feet below, two million pounds are buried.” The team dug another 8 feet before resting for the day. (Oak island money pit, 2014).

www.instructables.comJust shy of 40 feet away from the promised treasure, and water rushed in. The men attempted to bail it out without much success. A pump temporarily removed the water, but it quickly filled back up. At this point, the Onslow Company was depleted of energy and funds and ceased the operation (Oak Island treasure, n.d.).

www.history1900s.comAfter the Onslow Company came the Truro Company (1849) nearly 40 years later. The Truro Company was founded by a member of the original dig, Anthony Vaughn, and the brother of the Onslow Co.’s Simeon Lynds, along with other men. In 1861, the Oak Island Association began their excavating, under the agreement to give the property owner, Anthony Graves. One third of all findings (Oak island money pit, 2014).
Under the direction of the Oak Island Association in 1861, the first fatality occurred as a result of hunting for treasure. A boiler exploded, severely scolding and killing one operator. The company continued work for another four years without any successes. The name of the man killed is unknown. (Oak island money pit, 2014).
www.oakislandmoneypit.comIn 1890, another optimistic group of treasure hunters, under the direction of Frederick Blair and S.C. Fraser, formed the Oak Island Treasure Company (Oak island money pit, 2014).

www.niutoday.infoAfter attempting to drain the tunnel of water with a pump, and failing- much like every group before them- the men of the Oak Island Treasure Company resorted to drilling. The results seemed no different than before, but upon closer examination by Dr. A.E. Porter discovered a piece of parchment amongst the debris. On it, the letters “VI” were written. This lead many to believe the site to be connected with a Shakespearean conspiracy (Oak island money pit, 2014).

Robert Restall was peering into the pit when the gases knocked him unconscious and he fell in the pit. His son, Robert Restall Jr. ran to rescue him and suffered the same fate, along with two other men- Cyril Hiltz and Karl Graeser (Oak island money pit, 2014).

www.usnavymuseum.orgSupposedly, during the French and Indian War and subsequent Seven Years War, the Franco treasure was hidden in a vault on the island. It is said to possibly include French crown jewels belonging to Marie Antoinette (Curse of Oak Island, 2014).
www.poetryfoundation.orgThe piece of parchment led to a vicious conspiracy that proves Sir Francis Bacon’s true literary achievements lie at the bottom of the tunnel. It is said that Shakespeare may have never written anything, but just allowed Bacon to use his name in order to avoid being labeled as a lowly playwright (Oak island money pit, 2014).
www.humanityhealing.netPerhaps the most admirable of all possible treasures that Oak Island could hold, would be that of the Knights Templar. The peculiar collection of stones scattered about the island might be evidence that within the tunnel lies considerable amounts of gold and even the Holy Grail (Nickell, 2000).
www.history.comTwo brothers, Rick and Marty Lagina from Michigan, make up the latest generation of Oak Island treasure hunters. The History Channel hosts a new television series called “The Curse of Oak Island” starring these two men on their quest (Curse of Oak Island, 2014).
An old legend claims that seven lives must be taken before the island reveals her secrets. The count now stands at six.
