- Oak Island is a small 140 acre island located right off the south coast of Nova Scotia, Canada. This is an inhabited island mainly covered with trees. It is one of 360 islands in Mahone Bay. Located only one tenth of a mile from the shore it is connected by a causeway. Oak Island has been a hot topic for the past 200 years. It is the location of the “Money Pit.” Which has brought many a hungry eye for treasure hunting. From treasure ideas to who out this pit here this island has captured the attention of several researchers. We will discuss the ideas and theories in this PowerPoint. Not only is this a verbal hot topic, it is now a television series. The History Channel began a series on this mystery island on January 5, 2014. We will talk more about this later, but it follows a current treasure hunter and his quest for what is beneath.
- The story of Oak Island begins the summer of 1795 when Daniel McGinnis was interested in the lights he saw across the water at Oak Island (Lamb). He crossed the water to explore this mysterious island. While exploring he found an indention in the land right underneath a ship’s pulley. McGinnis found this site extremely interesting and worth further investigation.
- Knowing that he was a boy and was unable to tackle this on his own he enlisted the help of his two friends, John Smith and Anthony Vaughan. The next day the three boys came back with shovels in hand anxious to see what was beneath (Oak Island Money Pit).
- The three young explorers were about to dig until they reach 30 feet. On the way down they found a layer of flagstones at 2 feet. At ten and 20 feet they found a layer of oak logs. Eight years later the now men returned with help. Now they were able to drill further. They found that at every ten feet there was a layer of oak. At 40 feet-Charcoal At 50 feet-putty At 60 feet- coconut fiber. (Treasure: Oak Island.) At 90 they found a stone inscribed with writing that has yet to be translated. The next layer found was of spruce this was at 98 feet. After that, the hunters went through several small layers indicating a possible chest. 4 inches of oak followed by 22 inches of “metal in pieces” and another 4 inches of oak. At 126 they found wood and iron layers. Between 130 and 151 feet and also between 160 and 171 feet a blue clay was found which consisted of clay, sand, and water.
- Eight years after the initial finding the original team returned. They were the first to truly explore this island. They were accompanied by the Onslow Company, which was created for this hunt. The team reached 90 feet and found the first stones with writing. They left and returned days later to find that water had filled the pit. After this, the project was abandoned for 45 years.
- Anthony Vaughan and a brother of the Onslow Company teamed up with others to form the Truro company. They began to explore in 1849. This time the team had more funding and organization. Unfortunately this team only made it down to 86 feet. It was this team that began to use augers to reach depths their hands could not. These explorers found what is assumed to be chests. When they pulled the drill up they found that three links of gold chain were attached to the auger. Their next plan was to drill down then over to bypass the water. This did not work. The company broke up the following year.
- The next band of explorers to try their hand at the hunt was created in 1861. This group was called the Oak Island Association. The only stipulation put on this project was to give 1/3 of the findings to the property owner. At first the group dug three parallel tunnels without finding water. The plan was to tunnel over at 118 feet, but one foot from the Money Pit, water rushed in. This happened with both access tunnels. Drainage attempts all failed. Due to the heavy waters on either side, the money pit fell to now 112 feet. Towards the end of digging season tragedy happened. One of the members of the team was severely burned due to a boiler explosion, resulting in the first death involving this pit.
- In 1893 Frederick Blair and S.C. Fraser created the Oak Island Treasure Company. They received a $3,000 lease agreement that allowed exclusive rights to all treasure found on the island for three years. Wanting to pump the water the group met to gather the money for the pump. They were unable to do so. Months later, the group was informed that any finding they made belonged to the Queen. This stopped progress momentarily, but was picked back up when an agreement to only a portion was made. The next year the group was able to buy a pump. Second death- Maynard Kaiser was being pulled to the surface when the rope broke and dropped him to his death. This caused the crewmembers to feel like a bad spirit was guarding the treasure. This team was the first to find that there was a layer of iron underneath the chests of loose metal. When the drill came up this time metal wasn’t attatched. Parchment with two letter still yet to be verified returned to the surface.
- Will Chappell was a former member of the Oak Island Treasure Company. Frederick Blair also joined this new team. They began work in 1931. Unfortunately for this team the island was so torn apart from the years of excavating it. This caused them to start 6 feet further back than they should have. Although this group did not find anything in the pits that had not been found before, they found other pieces of the puzzle that would help later. One of these findings being the stone triangle. They stopped their exploration in 1932.
- Being Vice-president and general manager of the Hedden Iron company, Gilbert had funds and knowledge on his side. In 1935, Gilbert purchased a portion of the island. In 1936, he began his search. Unfortunately, 1936 did not provide results, but in 1937 they discovered what they thought to be one of the original flood tunnels. In 1938 drilling stopped.
- Robert Restall became enticed by the money pit in 1965. He met with Mel Chappell to get rights to the land. Mel agreed in exchange for 50% of the findings. Robert and his oldest son moved to the island. Later Robert moved the rest of his family to the island. They dedicated five years of their life to this island. Once again, tragedy struck the island. On August 17, 1965 Robert leaned over a shaft to check his team’s work. Gas was coming up from the pit. This rendered him unconscious causing him to fall into the pit. Bobbie, his son, jumped in to rescue him but was overcome by the gas as well. Two workers saw this and tried to rescue the father and son, but both died just as well.
- Seeing that Nova Scotia is littered with sink hole, some would tend to believe that this might also be just that. This island is only approximately 500 feet from the shore so could it be that this a just a natural occurrence? These people will say that the artifacts that have been found came in with the tide, and was buried over the years,
- In January of 2014 The History Channel began a tv series that followed father-son Dan and David Blankenship. The most current explorers of the island. The 200 years of searching and millions of dollars spent looking for treasure can now be enjoyed from the comfort of your own home. The series follows two brother Rick and Marty Lagina as they work with the Blankenship’s to find the elusive treasure. The second season is set to air next month.
- There are multiple theories as to who this treasure actually belongs to.
- There are theories that the treasure at the bottom of this pit is Captain Kidd’s that he buried prior to his Boston 1699 capture. Another theory is that this was the site of a community bank between him and Henry Every.
- Some believe that the treasure is that Blackbeard referred to at the time of his capture when he said “I have hidden it only a place myself and the devil can find.”
- Some think that Francis Bacon is the true author of Shakespeare’s plays. They believe that this proof is what is buried underneath the island. This idea evolved from the parchment found.
- This site that has been a hot topic for so many years is definitely something worth looking forward to. I am excited to see what might be underneath that beach. After doing this project I may just watch the television show. Whoever designed this underground treasure trap did a fabulous job of booby-trapping the island. If they went through this much effort to keep their treasure hidden then I can only imagine what they may find!
