Timeline of Music
Websites
By Rebecca Harris
Background
 The very first creation of a website was only 20 years ago.
 The internet has been around since the 1960’s, however, it
was mainly used by doctors, scientists and other
professions such as the military.
 In 1991, Tim Berners-Lee launched the first ever website. It
was created by hypertext coding language.
 The first generation of websites had linear layouts, bold
and heavy texts with no graphics.
 From 1992 onwards, the webolution started to occur, which
consisted of website layouts changing from these heavy
texts to more graphics to appeal to the target audience.
The very first website
 The very first website: http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html
There are no graphical images, just heavy
text with a variety of links. This is a very
simple layout with a white background
with black text. This shows that back in
1989, there was a lack of technological
advances.
Internet Underground
Music Archive
 The first website for artists to upload their
music.
 It was a big deal within the 1990’s in
musician circles, especially in Northern
California.
 Founded by Jeff Patterson in Santa Cruz
in 1993.
 The process of uploading music took a
long time due to the lack of technological
advances, which we have today.
 Today, we have websites such as
Soundcloud where music is easier and
quicker to upload; it gets more than 12
hours of new music posted every single
minute.
Soundcloud
 Based in Berlin, Germany.
 Founded by Alexander Ljung and
Forss on August 2007 in Stockholm,
Sweden.
 There were 40 million registered
users in July 2013, and 175 million
monthly listeners in December 2014.
 It enables its users to upload, record,
promote, and share their originally-
created sounds.
Les Horribles Cernettes
 They were an all-female parody pop group.
 They’re self-labelled as "the one and only High
Energy Rock Band”.
 Founded by employees of CERN (European
Organization for Nuclear Research).
 The genre was doo-wop.
 The group started from1990 to July 21st 2012.
 The members were Angela Higney; Michele de
Gennaro; Colette Marx-Neilsen and Lynn
Veronneau.
 Tim Berners-Lee posted the first photo of them
onto the internet.
http://musiclub.web.cern.ch/MusiClub/ba
nds/cernettes/press_info.html
The main
colours used
are purple and
pink, which are
stereotypical
feminine
colours.
The images are very
cheesy. For
example, the use of
cropping the band
onto a large hadron
collider, flying
through the sky.
Also, the costumes
and makeup which
they wear is over
the top.
The font used is
in italic with the
atom symbol
behind it,
connoting that
they’re
scientists (part
of CERN).
Shows the audience the
stars of this parody band
and where they’re from,
giving a brief introduction
to their background.
The font is Calisto MT (Body), with the title ‘The Tale’ in bold.
Links are used for the audience to click on and find out more information about the science
group CERN.
A brief parody
background
story is given
within ‘The
Tale’ to inform
the audience
on what the
songs will be
based on as
well as the
characteristics
of the members
of the band
More links are given for access to different websites, which the groups
music has been published on, as well as advertising their images by
having the headline ‘More Pictures’ and having a ‘click here’ for a press
book.
A contact link is given to the audience to email the band, therefore giving
the audience easy access if there are any concerns.
The Beatles
 From Liverpool, England.
 Their genres of music are pop;
rock and psychedelia.
 The band was active from 1960-
1970.
 They were associated with the
labels Parlophone; Apple and
Capitol.
 The band members are John
Lennon; Paul McCartney;
George Harrison and Ringo
Starr.
https://www.thebeatles.com
The Beatles logo on the top left corner of the
website is a bold black font, which helps it stand
out from the rest of the text as the band are
important.
A variety of links at the top of the page for the audience
to gain easy access to specific information. A search bar
is also included incase the links do not have the
information as well as looking for specific songs to listen
to.
Although the band are no longer
together, there are still key dates
being published for cinema events to
keep fans entertained. This is
important due to The Beatles being
one of the most original famous
groups in Britain.
Social media links are advertised at the bottom for
the target audience to gain easy access to the latest
updates about the band and key dates. Social media
is the easiest way to advertise to the audience as
majority of people use and have access to the
internet.
As mentioned before, the band aren’t together anymore,
however there are fans who publish gigs, cinema experiences
and premieres for celebrating anniversaries of the albums
which The Beatles have released.
The font of the headlines and text are the same as the font used for the links, making it easy for the
audience to read as it’s black on white, which is very old fashioned, like the band’s music.
The posters which are advertised are very colourful, which catches the audiences eye and persuade
them to read what they’re about. The bold colours such as red, blue and yellow connote the era in
which The Beatles originate from, which was the 60’s where hippies were around and used these
colours in their clothing.
The Webolution
 The difference between the Les Horribles Cernettes
website and the Beatles website is that the Beatles
have more graphics to look modern, which appeals to
the target audience and makes them want to revisit
thewebpage.
 However, Les Horribles Cernettes have a very simple
layout with heavy text, which isn’t appealing to the
audience much due to the lack of graphics, which is
very popular nowadays, whereas back in the 1900’s, it
was difficult to gain access to applying graphics onto a
webpage.
Elton John
 Been a musician since
1963-current.
 The genres of his music
are rock; pop; rock glam;
rock soft; rock rhythm and
blues.
 Works with the labels
Paramount; MCA; Geffen;
Rocket; Island and
Mercury.
https://www.eltonjohn.com
The first page on the website has a main image of Elton John
leaning on a vibrant piano as the background, with bold
yellow text, which is easier for the audience to see on a dark
background. The yellow also links with the headline ‘Yellow
Brick Road’ which is the name of his recent tour.
The bold colours on the piano connote the era which he started his music
career from (1963), which was an era of bold colours as well as the 1970’s,
again, linking it with the bold colours which hippies use to wear

Bold white text to aesthetically please the audience and persuade them to read more on the
page and sign up to the ‘Rocket Club’, making them feel like they belong in a personal
community, sharing similar interests. For example, Elton John.
Conclusion
 Overall, websites have changed dramatically due to technological evolution,
which has brought many advantages of improving a variety of pieces of
technology. For example, phones and computers.
 Music production or artists websites in the 1990’s had a lack of or no
graphics on the webpage at all, due to the lack of access to downloading an
image, therefore there was more text on screen, with a very plain and simple
layout, making it very anesthetically pleasing to the target audience.
However, many people in the 1990’s couldn’t access these websites due to
people with occupations such as scientists, doctors and the military only
having access to the internet.
 Nowadays, music production or artists websites have majority of the
webpage covered in graphics due to it being a very modern design, which
keeps the webpage aesthetically pleasing to the target audience. Also, due
to technological advances, websites now have links to connect to social
media sites such as Facebook and Instagram due to majority of the earths
population having access to the internet. This helps advertise and promote
the audience to buy the latest albums and merchandise.

For example, phones and computers.  Music production or artists websites in the 1990’s had a lack of or no graphics on the webpage at all, due to the lack of access to downloading an image, therefore there was more text on screen, with a very plain and simple layout, making it very anesthetically pleasing to the target audience. However, many people in the 1990’s couldn’t access these websites due to people with occupations such as scientists, doctors and the military only having access to the internet.  Nowadays, music production or artists websites have majority of the webpage covered in graphics due to it being a very modern design, which keeps the webpage aesthetically pleasing to the target audience. Also, due to technological advances, websites now have links to connect to social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram due to majority of the earths population having access to the internet. This helps advertise and promote the audience to buy the latest albums and merchandise.
