Script Culture in the Digital Age Documentary

INTRODUCTION
NARRATOR
In our modern society, technology
surrounds us and commonly effects our
every day lives.
In this documentary I will explore the
impact that technology has on the
music industry.
In 2019 the UK music industry
contributed 5.8 billion pounds to the
UK economy, showing the large-scale
interest that UK citizens have on
music.
Musicians make their living from
playing live music, royalties,
licensing fees, advances and
merchandising.
STREAMING
The most common way that people listen
to music is through streaming.
This is done through streaming
services such as Spotify, Apple Music,
Amazon Prime Music, Tidal, Deezer,
Youtube Music and many more.
These services allow you to download
music to play it offline, create
playlists to share with anyone around
the world or just to keep to yourself
or even upload songs and albums that
you have created.
However, music streaming has came a
long way from where it first started.
HISTORY OF RECORDING
The first known audio recording was
made in 1860 by a French inventor
named Édouard-Léon Scott de
who created a device
Martinville,
known as a phonautograph. The
phonautograph worked by transcribing
soundwaves as undulations through a

traced line on either glass or smoke-
blacken paper.
Many evolutionary music devices were
produced after the creation of the
phonautograph, such as Thomas Edison's
phonograph in 1877, the gramophone in
1887, the inspiration for the jukebox
in 1890 (otherwise known as the
'nickel-in-the-slot' phonograph),
headphones were created during 1910,
the world's first radio station in
1920 (station KDKA), Cassett tapes in
1963, the Boombox in 1966, the Walkman
in 1979, CD's in 1982, the MP3 player
was invented 1998, and the iPod in
2001.
Many more were created during these
times and the more that were created,
the more opportunities people had to
enjoy music for themselves.
As you can tell advancements in
technology have accelerated since the
creation of the phonautograph, these
devices helped to make music become
more popular and helped create the
digital age, however certain
historical events also had a huge
impact on the music industry.
WORLD WARS
During the devastation periods of the
First and Second World War, music took
a firm hold. Whether people were out
fighting in the trenches or at home
praying for the safe return of their
loved ones, music comforted all.
LIVE MUSIC
Although streaming makes music more
accessible to all, before the digital
age this was not possible, therefore
people had to rely on other methods to
enjoy music.
Before the advancements in technology,
the only possible way to enjoy music

was by watching it live.
FAMOUS LIVE MUSIC PERFORMANCES
According to historians, concerts
didn't officially begin until the 17th
century and over time began to gain
larger audiences, creating what we
know concerts as now.
INTERVIEW INTRO
To find out more information about
people's interest in music, I
interviewed some of my peers at
Sunderland College.
INTERVIEW Q&A
NARRATOR
What music genres and artists are you
interested in?
How do you listen to music?
Do you ever go to concerts and watch
music live?
INTERVIEW SUMMARY
M/ TASTE
From these interviews I learnt a lot
about all the different genres and
artists that each individual is
interested in and how diverse their
music taste is.
STREAMING
Along with this I found out that
everyone I interviewed uses streaming
services to listen to their music,
something that would have not been
accessible before the digital age.
This shows us how easily accessible
music is now-a-days, due to the
evolution of technology that we're so
lucky to have.
JUXEBOXES & VINYLS (CRISIS)

However, there were a few answers that
weren't as common, such as using
jukeboxes and vinyls to play their
favourite songs.
Jukeboxes have lost their popularity
in recent years and were most popular
during the 1940s and 50s. They are now
more commonly used as decorations,
specifically for an American "retro"
theme, rather than their actual use.
However, vinyl sales in more recent
years have jumped by around 50%.
Originally they were most popular
during the 1970's and early 80's
however after the production of CD's
they were surpassed.
Vinyls have held a high demand within
the last few years, however the
industry cannot keep up. There has
been a notable PVC plastic shortage,
this mixed with the desire for records
and the COVID 19 crisis has resulted
in a struggle.
CONCERTS & LIVE M/
When asked if they ever go to
concerts, the answers were mixed. Some
have been too hardly any, some want to
go to more.
The main aspect I noticed was that the
only reason they don't go to concerts
was due to factors like money, Covid
19 or just the lack of opportunities.
The majority expressed an interest in
going however just didn't have the
option to due to the circumstances.
LIVE MUSIC
Now that we have so many websites to
view which of our favourite bands are
on tour and which are performing near
us, live music is bigger than ever.
Especially with social media to

where you can receive personalised

bands you may like or already know and

near you.
SUMMARY/RECAP
So, with the digital age came many new
inventions that worked better than
anything that was ever used before.
These inventions heavily impacted the
music industry by making music more
accessible to all.
With music now being so easily
obtainable from anywhere around the
world, more people can enjoy the
delight that it brings.
