3. Head Lice
Head lice or Nits are parasites that feeds on human blood, usually
between 1mm and 3mm in length. They look like small insects that
don’t have wings or jumping legs and vary from whitish-brown to
reddish-brown. This condition is highly contagious spread from direct
hair to hair contact. If someone is infected with lice you will feel itchy
particularly around the nape and may have redness on the scalp due to
intense itching, the itching occurs because the lice are burrowing into
the skin.
What is it?
4. If you notice a client has head lice you may want to pull them aside and
inform them in an apologetic manner that you cannot continue the
service you may also suggest to the client they see a chemist and once
treated that you will continue the service because the condition is
contagious we would avoid continuing the service as we do not want to
pass it from client to client. If you have begun a service you must
sterilize all tools used, lice can not survive in temperatures above 60
degrees so its not difficult to eradicate them. It important to keep a
client history record so if the client comes back we know to have a
check to make sure all signs of infestation are gone.
Head LiceIn the salon
5. Melissa Jane Hairdressing do not offer a treatment for head
lice. Due to the salon not offering a treatment, we can suggest products
that have worked based on prior experiences such as Listerine or other
head lice products but this is not a prescription this is only stating some
of the options available as it is a very common thing. Suggest your
client go to their local chemist and see what they recommend. Usually
improvements can be seen soon after the treatment is put through the
hair and rinsed out depending on the suggested treatment suggested
by the chemist. When confronted with a client with head lice it is
important to write this on the client card so when the client comes
back you make sure to look for any signs of head lice before

8. Scabies
Scabies are mites that burrow into the skin and lay their eggs under the
skin. The skin will often rash on the surface of the skin and become
itchy and will often worsen during the night. This condition is highly
contagious and is spread by direct physical contact or from furnishings
and bedding. The mites can survive for days before finding a new host.
Symptoms of scabies have an itch, generalised rash, burrows of a silver
colour, nodules, acropustulosis (blisters or pustules), and or a
secondary infection.
What is it?
9. Scabies
If you believe a client has scabies you must inform them immediately,
like with any other condition its embarrassing enough for the person
infected, so try to speak with them in private about the situation in a
sensitive manner, and because it is contagious you must also tell them
in an apologetically manner that you cannot continue the service. If
you notice an infestation you must also disinfect all equipment used
you can wash in hot water and leave the items in a air tight container
for 72 hours as scabies can only live off the host for 2 – 3 days so if you
place the item in hot water or you can leave in a container for 72 hours.
In the Salon
10. Scabies
As it is highly uncommon for a hairdressing salon to have a scabies
treatment, it is important to suggest the client see a doctor or a
chemist who will usually suggest a scabicide and usually you will apply
for the set amount of days from chin down with every application you
should vacuum furnishings, carpet, bedding, couches and anything
else. You should start to notice improvements within a couple of days.
Make sure you suggest they see a doctor or chemist and get them to
follow all directions given. When confronted with a client with scabies
it is important to write this on the client card so when the client comes
back you make sure to look for any signs of scabies before commencing
the service to avoid spreading the mite.

sometimes have an odour) the condition is not contagious. Dandruff is
a condition where instead the process of keratinisation which is where
skin is made into the keratinocyte and then hardens and moves to the
surface of the skin this process normally takes 30 to 45 days but in
cases with dandruff it can take as little as 7 to 8 days which makes large
clumps of skin on the scalp. There are two forms of dandruff dry and
oily. Symptoms of dandruff include large flakes, itching, redness,
irritation, an be yellow in colour, and oiliness with an unpleasant odour.
What is it?

about it, you can mention a build up similarly to that of dandruff and
they may mention they have it or you may mention they use the Argan
Clarifying Detox Shampoo in conjunction with an Intense Moisture
Conditioner, or that they can buy a dandruff shampoo and conditioner
from a supermarket or chemist and you may also suggest they see a
chemist to see what product they suggest but it is not compulsory. You
can continue with any service and be careful to not over shampoo but
make sure that you focus on the scalp giving them tips to wash their
own hair.
In the Salon

23. Seborrhea
Seborrhea is the condition of oily skin and hair and gives the feeling of
‘oiliness’ or ‘greasiness’ and looks like the hair is has a wet, slicked back
look. Seborrhea may be linked to excess skin oil or sebum production
or it may be associated with accumulation or degradation of hair
products such as curling creams, hair sprays or gels or with
accumulation of by-products of heavy scalp perspiration and this
condition is not contagious. Most common in adolescence during
puberty when hormones are like a rollercoaster. The client may not
even realise they have this disorder and symptoms include oily/greasy
hair that looks like it has oil in it and may also have acne.
What is it?
24. Seborrhea
The client may not notice they have seborrhea and it may be hard for
you to state they have this. Seborrhea is a condition you would need to
get the client to see a dermatologist to know if they have your client
may talk about how their hair is always oily and they wash it often but
not too often you can suggest they see a dermatologist. The condition
is not contagious and it is safe to continue all services on the client you
needn’t worry about precautions or anything along those lines you just
will need to remember that you may want to use a shampoo and
conditioner suitable for their situation.
In the Salon
25. Seborrhea

28. Psoriasis
Psoriasis is thought to be a genetic disorder that is an immune disorder
affecting the skin it is caused by inflammation in the epidermis and
keratinocytes cells are produces rapidly. The condition is not
contagious, effected areas will look like white scaly parts which are
slightly inflamed with redness. Symptoms of psoriasis include redness,
make the area inflamed and irritated skin, dry patches of skin are also
seen looking silvery and scaly, bleeding can also occur when scales are
scratched off these are a few symptoms of psoriasis. The condition can
be found all over the body common most in the scalp, elbows, and
knees.
What is it?
29. Usually if a client has psoriasis they will know they have it as it is a
genetic disorder they will know this, and the client may also mention
they have it before the service, if you notice some areas that seem like
psoriasis you may mention some dry areas or you may ask if the client
has it as it is very common. It is also important to note when doing a
service on a client with psoriasis you should not use chemical services
near the scalp.
PsoriasisIn the Salon
30. Many salons have treatments for people with psoriasis but Melissa
Jane Hairdressing does not offer this service or have any products
specifically for people with this condition but you can always use a
moisturising shampoo and conditioner. This will help add moisture
meaning it will be harder for the skin to dry out and scale if they are
not using a medicated shampoo or conditioner you can suggest they
use a moisturising range. Even though the condition is not contagious it
is important to note to the condition on the client card and note the
severity so if a co-worker is to do the service next time they can note
improvements or worse and they can also be aware of the condition
before beginning the service.
PsoriasisRecommending Products
32. Note:• You should keep a client card and on this should be noted you need to note
name, contact number, prior things done and reactions they may have, this
is so other co-workers have an insight into the client without even speaking
to them, if the client had a condition you would also list the condition so co-
workers can look out for the condition and make sure the proper
precautions are taken to make sure the condition (if contagious) is gone or
(if not contagious) isn’t getting any worse for the client
• Clients with a condition should always be consulted in a calm and
respectful manner, the client will most likely be embarrassed so pulling
them into a private area in the salon wouldn’t be a bad idea
• If the condition is contagious you will also need to tell the client you are
unable to continue the service in an apologetic manner
• When disinfecting products the water must be above 60˚ and must have a
cleaning agent in it to stop infestation
