These instructional slides will take you through the steps to help you with the application process for the English Program in Korea (EPIK) and the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (SMOE).
2. Additional Documents You Will Need
All of the following documents are in addition to the required
documents for EPIK/SMOE. Some of the documents may
apply to you and some of them may not apply. Please read
through all of the slides. If you are unsure, please contact
your EPIK/SMOE advisor.
3. Birth Certificate
This only applies to UK and Australian applicants, because
criminal charges, arrests, convictions, etc. do not appear on British
and Australian criminal record checks if the person had their name
changed.
UK and Australian applicants must submit an original certified
true copy of your birth certificate, not a photocopy. To order an
original certified true copy of your birth certificate contact the
Registry of Births Office.

4. Birth Certificate
Important - Multiple Names: If the name on your submitted birth
certificate is different than your present name then EPIK/SMOE
requires you to submit an apostilled criminal record check under
each name.
The birth certificate must be apostilled the same as your diploma
and criminal record check. Please follow the correct apostille
and notarization procedure.
Click here for the Apostille and Notarization page for the UK.

6. TEFL - TESOL - CELTA
● If you have a certificate or are in the process of getting
your certificate this will apply to you.
● When you send in your documents after your
EPIK/SMOE interview you need to include a photocopy
of your certificate. If you haven’t completed your
certificate you'll need to submit a proof of enrollment
letter for the TEFL course from your course provider and
the Sworn Declaration.
● TEFL and TESOL certificates must state the total hours
for the course and also how many hours are online and
classroom based. CELTA certificates are not required to
state how many hours the course was.
7. Sworn Declaration
If you are in the process of any of the following and will not
be finished before you submit your documents after your
EPIK/SMOE interview, you must submit a Sworn
Declaration.
● TEFL - TESOL - CELTA
● Teaching Certificate
● Master's Diploma
● Teaching Contract
The Sworn Declaration is one page and takes about 3 minutes
to fill out. Your EPIK/SMOE advisor will send it to you after
your EPIK/SMOE interview.
8. Teaching Certificate
● If you are a certified teacher in your home country you will
need to submit a photocopy of your teaching license after
your EPIK/SMOE interview. The license does not need to be
notarized or apostilled. Your teaching license must be valid,
as expired licenses are not accepted.
● If your license is going to expire during your year with
EPIK/SMOE, but will still be valid when you start your
contract, it is ok. You just need to make sure that you renew
your license before it expires.
● EPIK/SMOE does not consider a substitute license the same
as a full teaching certificate. Therefore, they do not accept
them.
9. Marriage Certificate
If you are applying with your spouse and requesting joint
housing, you need to submit a copy of your marriage
certificate.
Incheon Security Deposit Form
If you listed Incheon as your preferred placement on your
application, then you need to fill in this form.
10. Tattoo and Piercing Sworn Declaration
This is a form that you will need to fill out if you have tattoos
or piercings. It states that you will abide by EPIK/SMOE
policies regarding them.
The form is one page and takes about 3 minutes to fill out.
Your EPIK/SMOE advisor will send it to you after your
EPIK/SMOE interview.
***EPIK may request photos of your tattoos covered and
uncovered, as tattoos are not allowed to be visible while you
are teaching.
11. SMOE Documents
If you listed Seoul as your preferred placement on your
application, then the following three documents will apply to
you:
● SMOE Attachment Form
● SMOE Contract
● SMOE Addendum
The SMOE Attachment Form will be submitted with the
EPIK/SMOE application. Your EPIK/SMOE advisor will
speak with you about this.
The SMOE Contract and Addendum will be sent to you after
your EPIK/SMOE interview. Your advisor will walk you
through how to properly fill out each form.
12. Additional Criminal Record Checks
● If you have lived in one foreign country (for 5 full years
or more) as an adult (18 years of age and older) then you
must submit a CRC from that country in addition to the
CRC from your country of citizenship.
● Additional CRCs need to be authenticated by the Korean
Consulate in that country. Additional CRCs from foreign
countries must be submitted with the rest of your hard
copy documents after your EPIK/SMOE interview.
