1. Tier 1 (General)
This category was closed to new applicants from 6 April 2011. However, if you already hold a Tier 1
General visa or HSMP visa, you can continue to extend and the changes will not affect your status. It
is important to safeguard that any extension made is prepared to a high standard, as mistakes may
result in you no longer being able to remain in this now closed category. Here at Immigration
Advisory Services UK, we have over 25 years of experience and will ensure that your application is
dealt with professionally. We tailor each application to the facts presented, and appreciate that no
two applications are the same. Call us on 02037442797 or submit an enquiry for one of our advisors
to return your contact.
The Requirements
You are awarded points based on your qualifications, previous earnings, age and work experience.
The number of points awarded will depend on when you entered the Tier 1 General category. Some
of you may need to achieve 75 points and others 80 points, depending on when you made your first
application for a Tier 1 (General) visa. Contact one of our leading immigration solicitors for a free
assessment or submit your enquiry here.
The English language requirementmust be satisfied in one of the following;
- That you come from a country that the UKBA regards as majority English language speaking.
- Have passed an English language test at least to the C1 of the Council of Europe’s Common
European Framework for Language Learning. We can assist in putting you in contact with a
number of independent providers of the required test.
- You have successfully completed a Master’s degree taught in English.
The maintenance requirement must also be considered when applying for your extension. If you do
not hold sufficient funds for at least 28 days, you will not be eligible to apply. As the figure is often
changed by the UKBA, please contact one of our lawyers for your free assessment.
When your Tier 1 (General) visa is successfully approved, you will be given either 3 years or 2 years
of Leave to Remain, depending on how long you were given when you first issued your visa. It will
usually be issued to uplift the time you have of continuous residence in the UK to 5 years so that you
can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain.
