A cultural desert festival called Rann Utsav is organized in a highly eco-sensitive zone. It complies with the extremely strict norms for its operation ensuring no damage to the natural resources. In addition to this, the festival had to be crafted as a solution that uplifted the native people of Kutch, instead of commercializing the event for monetary gains. Chronicled here are a series of initiatives that make Rann Utsav a sustainable initiative that lead to positive impact on the development of Kutch.
2. What was a desert to most, was also an enchanting wonder of
nature and It all depended in the way the beautiful land of Kutch
was perceived. For centuries the people of Kutch lived in harmony
with the desert.
One Period of time Kutch like…
A devastating earthquake in 2001 annihilated this simple life With
destruction that leveled whole villages to dust.
There was a need to bring about some change to help the people
of Kutch get back on their feet.
After Earthquake
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has a idea of rannutsav.
He saw the how it was blessing if only it could be celebrated with
the world.
While most believed the vast desert to be an ill.
Then that was started as a 3 days Kutch festival.
Later on that was started for more than 100 days.
And this Kutch festival was a vision that accelerated the
development of Kutch in a responsible way.
A Sustainable Initiative.
A Significant Impact.

4. The art of financial independence
Benefiting Women Artisans
Rannutsav gave platform to local women
the local women of Kutch are experts in creating elaborate
embroideries in vibrant colours.
But they hardly venture out of their homes to sell them.
Because Merchants from metros would either pay nominal
prices for their work and selling it at a higher cost, but not
passing on the extra profit to the women.
Rann Utsav’s specially organised within the tent city.
So that was a good platform to local women artists to
showcase their talent and turn it into a source of livelihood in
front of an international audience.

And For Operating and maintaining a massive event for
more than hundred days requires massive manpower and
skilled workforce.
So for that Providing opportunities to the locals in the
Hospitality Industry is an excellent way to absorb
unemployed youth, train them with necessary skills and
enhance their chances of creating a suitable career.

6. Luxury that’s in harmony with nature
Temporary Accommodations
The White Rann being covered under a lake for half the year, it
was extremely important to create accommodations that would not
damage the ecosensitive zone.
Any permanent form of construction would alter the natural
richness of the land,
However, providing a hospitality experience that was at par with
international standards was equally significant for Rann Utsav’s
success.
In order to pass on the benefits of the Kutch festival to the locals
no big hoteliers were brought to this eco-sensitive area.
Instead luxury tent accommodations were set up that could be
assembled and dismantled as the needs arose.
Each of these tents provides the advantages of a concrete
structure without the disadvantages it presents.

7. A green plate for a green planet
Organic Waste Convertor (OCW) machine
According to United Nations Development Program, about
40% of food is wasted in India.
All guests at Rann Utsav are encouraged to enjoy the cuisine
with a sense of responsibility and respect
But zero wastage cannot be guaranteed.
This is why we took an innovative initiative to avoid
wastage of food from the dining halls at Rann Utsav.
We partnered with Excel Industries to install and operate a
state-of-the-art Organic Waste Convertor (OCW) machine.
Which converts the wasted food into environment-friendly
compost which helps farmers in growing nutrient rich crops.

Spread across 5,00,000 sq. mt. of massive area,
travelling within the Tent City, Dhordo is a necessity.
However, usage of vehicles that ran on conventional
fuels would only emit more greenhouse gases.
In order to curb its effect, it was decided that emission-
free modes of transport would be adopted wherever
possible.
Inside the tent city, battery operated eco- friendly
chakkadas and bicycles are the main means of transport.
Camel cart rides are arranged to the salt desert with the
twin benefit of being eco-friendly, at the same time
sustaining local livelihood.
