ProblemStatement
The elderly populationsoftenmissesoutongovernment,commercial,andotherservices,interactionin
society,andare at higherriskof becomingavictimonline due toidentitytheftandfraudrelatedcrimes.
Thisis due to theirnotgrowingupwithtechnologyineverydayuse,lackof understandingof how it
works,andhow to effectivelyinteractwithitina safe and responsible way.
Objectives
1. To provide regularweekly educationandtrainingtoelders,toincludebasicunderstandingof
computers,it'suses,basicinternetnavigation, accessingservicesonline, andhow toprotect
personal information.
2. Provide additional computersandnetworksupportforuse duringteachingandindividual aidin
obtainingservices.
3. Provide forprogramdevelopment, administration, andcoordinationwiththe DavisCounty
Librarysystemforlocal teachinglocations anduse of computers.
Methods
1. Reach agreementswith the local branchesof the DavisCountyLibrarysystemtoprovide
locationsandeventannouncementof the training.
2. Contact local college andtechnical schools(i.e.WeberState UniversityandDavisApplied
Technical College) forteachingandcomputermajorvolunteerstodevelopeducational
standardsand programguidelinesaspartof an individualclassprojecttobe used.
3. Recruitlocal college andtechnical schoolsforvolunteersto teachthe program developedabove
and gainexperience inteachingandtechnical support whilehelpingeldersunderstand
technology.
2. 4. Recruitvolunteersfrom pastattendeesof the trainingprogramtocontinue teachingandinspire
newattendees tounderstandandlearnfromsomeone similartothemandcontinue toshare
theirowninsightsinunderstandingtechnologyandhow touse it.
Evaluation
Communitysurveyswill be givenatSeniorServicescentersandatany regularmeetingorhealth
meetingatthe beginningof the program andwill be generallyavailable atall pointsof service to
determine level of understandingaboutcomputersandspecificinterestsinlearning. Attendeeswill be
givenpre andpost attendance surveysatall educationclassesandpersonal assistance appointmentsto
determine if levelof understandinghasincreased,andif additional interesthasbeengeneratedandin
whatarea.
Future Funding
Afterthe 3 yearstartupprogram fundedbythisgrant DavisCountySeniorServices will take overfuture
fundingandprogramadvancement. Itisexpectedthatwithin10yearsthe programmay not be needed
as the elderlypopulationatthistime maybe deceasedandthe future populationof elderlywill have
more experience withtechnology andthe programcanbe reducedandeventuallyphasedoutasmore
elderlywill have experience withtechnologyandunderstandinghow itworks.
Budget
The budgetfromthe $150,000.00 will be usedoverthree (3) years. The firstyear,half of the total grant
($75,000.00) will be usedtopurchase laptops,networkingsupport,educationdevelopment,education
classes,andprovide forsome of the administrationbyexistingstaff orbypart-time internship. The
secondyearhalf of the remaininggrant($37,500.00) will be usedforeducationclasses,community
outreach, volunteerrecruiting,anycomputermaintenance and networksupport,administrationand
course updates. The thirdand final yearthe remaininggrant($37,500.00) will be usedfor continued
educationclasses,communityoutreach,volunteerrecruitingfrompriorattendees,maintenance and
support,andcourse updates.
