2. INTRODUCTION
A gas turbine, also called a combustion turbine, is a type of continuous and internal combustion engine .
The main elements common to al gas turbine engines are:
. An upstream rotating gas compressor
. A combustor
. A downstream turbine on the same shaft as the compressor
3. BRAYTON CYCLE
• The Brayton cycle is a thermodynamic cycle that describes the operation of
certain heat engines that have air or some other gas as their working fluid. The
original Brayton engines used a piston compressor and piston expander, but
modern gas turbine engines and airbreathing jet engines also follow the
Brayton cycle.
4. BRAYTON POWER CYCLE OPEN
• Joule or Brayton cycles are used either in open or closed systems in heat
engines or in power plants exclusively with gas turbines. The Brayton cycle
is also known as the gas turbine cycle since it uses gases (other than steam)
which can be compressed but not liquefied by a condenser
5. THE THERMAL EFFICIENCY OF THIS CYCLE IS
FOUND AS THE NET WORK DELIVERED BY THE
CYCLE DIVIDED BY THE HEAT ADDED TO THE
WORKING SUBSTANCE
8. THE COMPRESSOR
• which draws air into the engine, pressurizes it, and feeds it to the combustion
chamber literally at speeds of hundreds of miles per hour
THE COMBUSTION SYSTEM
Typically made up of a ring of fuel injectors that inject a steady stream of fuel (e.g.,
natural gas) into the combustion chamber where it mixes with the air.The
combustion produces a high temperature, high pressure gas stream that enters
and expands through the turbine section.
THE TURBINE
It is an intricate array of alternate stationary and rotating aerofoil-section blades.
9. LAND BASED GAS TURBINE-
•There are two types of land base gas
turbine:-
•1) Heavy frame engines
•2) Aero derivative engines
13. APPLICATIONS OF GAS TURBINE
POWER PLANT
The gas turbine plants are used for the following
purposes:
1. It is used to drive the generators and supply peak loads in
steam, diesel or hydro plants.
2. To work as combustion plants with a conventional steam
boiler.
3. To supply mechanical drive for auxiliaries.
14. FUTURE & DEVELOPMENT
•Gas turbines have grown into a hallmark of the
modern power system for their high efficiency,
reliability, operational flexibility, fuel flexibility, and
low-emission power options.
•Gas turbines today mainly use natural gas as fuel, but
original equipment manufacturers have embarked on
efforts to make them much more fuel-flexible, and
some have even laid out roadmaps to get to 100%
hydrogen combustion.
