1. OPENING PRAYER
Lord Jesus, our Savior, let us come to you.
Our hearts are cold; Lord, warm them with your selfless
love.
Our hearts are sinful; cleanse them with your precious
blood.
Our hearts are weak; strengthen them with our joyous Spirit.
Our hearts are empty; fill them with your divine presence.
Lord Jesus, our hearts are yours; possess them always and
only for yourself.
AMEN
3. What is Ash Wednesday?
Ash Wednesday is a Christian festival. We go to
mass and get ashes put on our forehead.
During Lent, Christian people often choose to
give things up to help them remember the time
that Jesus fasted in the wilderness.
It marks the beginning of Lent. Lent lasts for 40
days and 40 nights because that’s how long Jesus
went to pray for.
4. When is Ash Wednesday?
The date of Ash Wednesday
changes each year but it is always
46 days before Easter Sunday.
5. The Ashes are holy ashes
and they are blessed by
the priest.
They are made by burning
last year’s palm crosses.
Where Do the Ashes Come From?
6. Why Is It Called Ash Wednesday?
During the service, people are marked on the forehead with a
cross of ashes. The ashes are a symbol of being sorry for things
they have done wrong.
It is a reminder of the need for penitence
by receiving an imposition of ashes on
the forehead on the first day of Lent.
It is a reminder of our death.
“Remember that you are dust, and to
dust you shall return..”
7. The Ashes are in a
cross shape to
remind us that
Jesus died for us on
a cross.
8. What is the importance of Ash
Wednesday?
Christians think about the things
they have done wrong
so that they can try to be better
people in the future.
9. BEFORE YOU CAN CHANGE
THE WORLD, YOU NEED TO
UNDERSTAND YOURSELF.
“Noverim te, noverim me.”
