2. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Identify ways of conducting
oneself in the community;
2. Evaluate critically behavior that
enhance social Maturity; and
3. Articulate ways of growing
socially.
3. INVOCATION
Grant, O God, that your holy and life-giving Spirit may
so move every human heart, that the barriers which
divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and
hatreds cease, and that, with our divisions healed, we
might live in justice and peace; through your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
4.
5. It is the good
that is shared
by all in
common.
What do you mean by common good?
It includes "the sum total of
social conditions which
allow people, either group
or individuals, to reach their
fulfillment more fully and
more easily".
6. How can the common
good be promoted?
The common good follows wherever the
fundamental rights of the person are respected and
men can freely develop their intellectual and
religious potential. The common good implies that
men can live in society with freedom, peace, and
security.
7. What is more important,
society or the individual?
• In God's sight, every individual matters.
However, an individual cannot be
separated from the society for he is a
social being.
• God did not create man as a “solitary
being,” but wanted him to be a “social
being”
8. WHAT IS A SOCIAL BEING
- Human beings are social beings – the
choices we make affect others.
- We are accountable for the things we
commit (commission) and those we fail
to do (omission)
9. As created in the image of the
Trinity (God) – which is a
communion of persons,
humans are called to be in
communion with one another.
10. • All humans possess dignity and have infinite
value.
• Societies are called by God to defend human life
by ensuring that basic human needs and rights are
met.
• This is the task of social justice
11. SOCIAL JUSTICE
Jesus reminds us that ignoring social needs is just
the same as causing them.
“All therefore enjoy an equal dignity”
CCC1934
13. Principles of Catholic
Social Teachings
Human
Dignity
“Created in the image and likeness of
the one God and equally endowed with
rational souls, all persons have the
same nature and the same origin.
Redeemed by the sacrifice of Christ, all
are called to participate in the same
divine beatitude: all therefore enjoy an
equal dignity.”
CCC,1934
14. Principles of Catholic
Social Teachings
Subsidiarity respects personal
dignity by recognizing in the
person a subject who is always
capable of giving something to
others. Such assistance is offered
when individuals or groups are
unable to accomplish something
on their own
Benedict XVI, Caritas in Veritate, n 57
Subsidiarity
15. Principles of Catholic
Social Teachings
“Solidarity helps us to see the ‘other’ –
whether a person, people, or nation – not
just as some kind of instrument, with a work
capacity and physical strength to be
exploited at low cost and then discarded
when no longer useful, but as our neighbour,
a helper to be a sharer, on a par with
ourselves, in the banquet of life to which all
are equally invited by God.”
John Paul II, Sollicitudo Rei Socialis, n 39
Solidarity
16. Principles of Catholic
Social Teachings
“To love someone is to desire that
person’s good and to take effective
steps to secure it. Besides the good of
the individual, there is a good that is
liked to living in society: the common
good. It is the good of ‘all of us’, made
up of individuals, families and
intermediate groups who together
constitute society
Benedict XVI, Caritas in Veritate, n 7
Common
Good
17. Social Justice can only be achieved when individuals are
encouraged and have the opportunity to cultivate virtues.
Without justice in the soul, there will be no justice in the land.
18. Explain the statement and
give concrete examples.
Write your inputs in your
notebook.
“No man is
an island.”
19. Gracious Father, thank you for making this day
successful. As we depart, Lord, we ask you to be with us.
May your angels go before us and clear the way so that
we can reach home safely. Thank you for the lives that
you have prepared beforehand for us to touch with your
word. Lord, thank you for the laughter and the
wonderful time that we’ve shared. May all glory and
honor come back to you in everything that we do. It is in
Jesus’ name we believe and pray, Amen.
