1. Introduction
World Toilet Day is a day to raise awareness and inspire action to tackle the global
sanitation crisis – a topic often neglected and shrouded in taboos. Today, 2.4
billion people are struggling to stay well, keep their children alive and work their
way to a better future – all for the want of a toilet.
The Sustainable Development Goals, launched in 2015, include a target to ensure
everyone everywhere has access to toilets by 2030. This makes sanitation a global
development priority. Government of Nepal has also set the target for universal
access to sanitation by 2017.
The theme of World Toilet Day 2016 is ‘toilets and jobs’, focusing on how
sanitation, or the lack of it, can impact people’s livelihoods. Toilets play a crucial
role in creating a strong economy, as well as improving health and protecting
people’s safety and dignity, particularly women’s and girls’.
2. Top facts:
2.4 billion People live without improved sanitation (World Health
Organization (WHO)/UNICEF 2015).
One in ten people has no choice but to defecate in the open (WHO/UNICEF
2015).
Diarrhoea caused by poor sanitation and unsafe water kills 315,000 children
every year (WASH watch 2016).
Disease transmission at work mostly caused by poor sanitation and hygiene
practices, causes 17% of all workplace deaths (International Labour
Organization (ILO) 2003).
Loss of productivity due to illnesses caused by lack of sanitation and poor
hygiene practices is estimated to cost many countries up to 5% of GDP
(Hutton 2012)
Diarrhoea caused by unsafe water, poor sanitation and hygiene is linked to
50% of child undernutrition, which can lead to stunted physical and mental
development (WHO 2008).
Globally, approximately $260 billion is lost each year to the effects of poor
sanitation and unsafe water on many aspects of the economy, but most
significantly on healthcare (Hutton 2012).
In the EU, there are more than 2.5 million jobs in the wastewater and solid
waste management sectors (Ernst and Young 2006).
Every $1 spent on water and sanitation generates a $4.3 return in the
form of reduced health care costs.
3. Objectives of WTD:
Raised awareness and inspired to community people for behabiour change
Disseminated importance of hygienic use of toilet
Coordination ,collaboration and joint action plan to tackle sanitation crisis
4. Nepal context
The sanitation coverage of Nepal is 88.5 per cent meaning almost nine in ten
households have toilet. By development region, mid and far western region have
coverage of 99 percent each while central region has lowest coverage (79%)
followed by eastern region with coverage of 87 percent and western region (97%).
In the last Nepali FY, 324,000 toilets were built in Nepal- which is 890 toilet per
day. If we consider 5 skilled and 10 unskilled persons are required to build a toilet,
48,69,000 persondays equivalent job was created by construction of toilet alone
in Nepal. If we convert person days into cash it will come 2.9 Arab (skilled labour
wage= 800 and unskilled labor wage 500). This amount of work carried out in the
construction of toilet is estimated at five folds higher than what the development
agencies provided in mobilization for toilet construction.
As of today, about 622,150 toilets have to be built (estimated) in Nepal. There is
407 days left to end 2017 which is the national target of ODF. If we have to
complete the ODF mission by 2017, Nepal has to make 1,528 toilet in a day.
Though this figure is higher than the 2015/16 year target, there is high possibility
of having achieving ODF status as there are only few districts remaining to work
for ODF.
