1. Conservation of Heritage:
Issues and Measures
Here, we will discuss the challenges in
conservation of cultural heritage as well as the
efforts done in this direction. We will also discuss
the efforts that an individual can do for
conservation of cultural heritage.

2. Issues in conservation of
Heritage
 Human errors-
1. Negligence and lack of awareness due to which quality
of heritage like monuments and artifacts deteriorates
2. Corrupt officials in institutions meant for preservation of
Heritage (like Archeological Survey of India) do not do
their duties properly
3. Lack of conscious response towards globalisation and
westernisation causes lack of pride in local language,
customs, dresses, etc. and causes their negligence.
4. Tourists vandalise public places and heritage sites.
 Financial issues- Not enough funds for conservation of
all precious pieces of heritage. In such conditions, only
a few sites get attention and care.
 Environmental Issues- Pollution, Acid Rain, etc.
 Social Issues- Social conflicts sometimes result in
destruction of heritage.

3. Measure of conservation of
Heritage
 Legal & governmental Measures- Many laws are made
for preservation of cultural Heritage such as:
1. Establishment of Archaeological Survey of India (in 1861)
2. Ancients Monuments Protection Act, 1904
3. Archaeological Sites and Remains Act , 1958
4. Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972
5. Heritage Conservation and Preservation Act, 2010
6. Various regional acts for protection of particular
monuments.

2. Kala Mandir
3. Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and
Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY)

4.  Individual participation-
1. Many individuals organise public events to
clean heritage sites.
2. Individuals can establish institutes for
preservation of cultural heritage. For eg, in
Rajasthan, Komal Kothari established Rupayan
Sansthan which records folk songs sung by
particular castes in Rajasthan among various
other activities.
3. Practice our regional language, sports, dances,
music etc.
4. Be aware and make others conscious about
taking care of elements of Heritage.
5. Be a responsible citizen and do not harm tourist
places.
6. Do our share in pollution reduction.
