2. Urban –rural areas
The National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO)
defines ‘rural’ as follows:
• An area with a population density below 400 per
square kilometer,
• Villages with clear surveyed boundaries but no
municipal board,
• Population below 5000
• A minimum of 75% of male working population
involved in agriculture and allied activities

3. Urban area
Census of India 2011, the definition of urban area is as
follows:
• All places with a municipality, corporation, cantonment
board or notified town area committee, etc.
• All other places which satisfied the following criteria:
• A population more than 5,000;
• At least 75% of the male main working population
engaged in non-agricultural pursuits; and
• A density of population of more than 400 persons per
square kilometre (1,000/sq mi)
