Editor's Notes
Most of us can identify with the first picture….. Its our perception of ‘stress’. However stress has been around for ever. Any challenge to our function is stress, whether its physical, mental, emotional or physiological.
Stress in the ‘caveman’ days was primarily the sourcing of food……
hunting –gathering…. Acute stress…. The hunter could become the hunted……necessitated the ‘fight or flight response’[physiological]….governed by adrenalin [ increases heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, glycogen breakdown to produce usable glucose,…etc]
Acute stress today …..a vehicular accident / delay while travelling/ even an exercise session…
Chronic stress in the ‘caveman’ days….starvation…..famine…..necessitated cortisol release and lingering…..to keep alive
Chronic stress today….EMIs, hectic lifestyle, constant deadlines, keeping up with the Joneses, the boss from hell….NOTHING TO DO WITH STARVATION! But our body still responds to chronic stress in the same age old way……..
Pic 3 is a humorous take…………
This is Hans Selye’s General Adaptation Syndrome….simplified
Chronic stress keeps us in stage 2……governed by cortisol
When the stressors become overwhelming….stage 3, if unrelenting…breakdown….illness, even death.
Energy input relatively less compared to energy output in the old days [ hunting –gathering was tough work!] big meals were few and far between
Energy input relatively huge compared to energy output today…..push button lifestyles…..
Changing shape…….evolution……

The more the brain evolves….efficiency….passive overeating…. Lazy and fat???
