2. AIMS & OBJECTIVES
It is a rare inflammatory disease which is benign but it can be
sometimes potentially morbid.
To study the plain and contrast MRI characteristics
of pathologically proven granulomatous mastitis.
To analyze the different characters of the lesion.
3. METHODS
A retrospective observation study conducted in the
Department of Radio-diagnosis at Shri Guru Ram Rai
Institute of Medical and Health Sciences , Dehradun,
Uttarakhand .
The study was done for all cases of granulomatous mastitis
undergoing MRI breast for a period of 2 years.
All the other cases of known malignancy were excluded.
All the available pathology related to these cases were
obtained.
4. MRI CHARACTERISTICS
OF LESIONS
• The MRI characteristics of lesions were assessed for T2 signal
intensity, diffusion weighted imaging , laterality ,multi- focality,
mass or non-mass like enhancement, lesion shape , margins ,and
enhancement characters.
5.
6.
7.
8. RESULTS
Nine cases of granulomatous mastitis were assessed with the mean
age of presentation being 33 years +/- 2.2 years .
Right breast was more commonly involved than left
breast(n=5, 55.55%)
Multiple lesions were seen in four patients (44.44%) with sinus tract
formation in three patients(n=3, 33.33%).
9. • Most lesions showed mass like morphology (n=5 , 55.55%) with
round shape and smooth margins showing peripheral
rim enhancement(n=4, 44.44%).
• Non masses enhancement was seen in four cases with
segmental distribution (n=3, 33.33%) and linear enhancement
in one case (11.11%) .
• The enhancement kinetic curve showed type I pattern in
six patients (66.66%) and type II pattern in three patients.
(33.33%).

11. CONCLUSION
• Wide spectrum of MRI findings are seen in granulomatous
mastitis with round , peripherally and sinus enhancing , diffusion
restricted lesions with multi-focality and sinus formation being the
most common findings in our study
