7. Introduction
In ‘Journey to the End of the Earth’ Tishani Doshi
describes the journey to the coldest, driest and
windiest continent in the world: Antarctica.
Antarctica is Earth's southernmost continent. It
contains the geographic South Pole and is situated
in the Antarctic region of the Southern Hemisphere,
almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, and is
surrounded by the Southern Ocean.

8. How did Tishani Doshi go to
Antarctica?
She went under a programme‘Students on Ice’ .
This programme was started by a Canadian,
Geoff Green, with the aim to take school
students to such places so that they learn about
the earth they are living on and about how
human action is causing global warming and
destroying the environment

9. The people who travel to or live in
Antarctica fall into two main groups:-
(1) those who live and work on scientific
research stations or bases
(2)tourists
No one lives in Antarctica indefinitely in the
way that they do in the rest of the world. It
has no commercial industries, no towns or
cities, no permanent residents

10. Amusing information
There was once an Indian post office that was situated in Antarctica?
Yes, it was an exciting place to be at one point of time. It was
established in the year 1984 during the third Indian expedition to
Antarctica. It was located at Dakshin Gangotri, which was the first
scientific base station of India situated in Antarctica

11. As exciting as it sounds, this post office was indeed
situated in a stunning location and it was more than just
a post office. In its times, it used to double up as a place
for multiple support systems, including the presence of
an ice-melting plant, laboratories, storage,
accommodation, recreation facilities, a clinic and also a
bank counter.

17. Important
It is guessed that 650 million years ago a landmass existed
which was named Gondwana. But after 500 million years
this land mass separated into countries .Gondwana was
pushed downwards toward the south pole. There
are cold currents near S Pole because of which water
freezed here in this region and this region is now known as
Antarctica .Therefore there are no human settlements there
till date. In Antarctica ,It is
6 months day 6months night due to the tilt of the earth at
25degrees.Human beings began to appear
12000 years ago
