4. INTRODUCTION
The story is written by Nick Middleton. This chapter is about the
narrator’s journey from slopes of Ravu to Mount Kailash. This was to
complete the kora. Thus, it gives us an account of the journey they
experience. Moreover, the main aim of the journey was religious mostly.
We see that the author wishes to complete the journey to Mt. Kailash.
Thus, in order to embark on this pilgrimage journey, he chooses a tough
one.
5. Global Silk Trade
The Silk Road was an ancient trade route that linked the Western world with the
Middle East and Asia. It was a major conduit for trade between the Roman Empire
and China and later between medieval European kingdoms and China. Apart from
material goods, religion was one of the West major exports along the Silk Road.
The Silk Road was important because it helped to generate trade and commerce
between a number of different kingdoms and empires. The Silk Road was the first
global trade route in history.
6. D A R C H E N
Darchen is situated right in front of the sacred
mountain, Mount Kailash. Its altitude is 4,575
metres and is the starting point for pilgrimages in
the region.
Darchen was once an enclave of Bhutan, held for
almost 300 years and from where Bhutan raised
revenue, until the People's Republic of China
annexed it in 1959.
7. L H A S A
Lhasa is the second most populous urban area on
the Tibetan Plateau after Xining and, at an altitude
of 3,656 metres. Lhasa is one of the highest cities
in the world. The city has been the religious and
administrative capital of Tibet since the mid-17th
century. It contains many culturally significant
Tibetan Buddhist sites such as the Potala Palace,
Jokhang Temple and Norbulingka Palaces.
8. Lake Manasarovar
Mansarovar is a large
freshwater lake situated
in Tibet (China) and is a
pilgrimage holding
religious importance for
Hindus, Jains, and
Buddhists.
It is situated about
2000 km from
Lhasa.
9. Gurla Mandhata
Gurla Mandhata is the highest peak of the
Nalakankar Himal, a small subrange of the
Himalaya. It lies in Tibet Autonomous Region
of China. It is the 34th highest peak in the
world.
It sits roughly across Lake Manasarowar
from the sacred peak of Mount Kailash.
10. M o u n t K a i l a s h
Mount Kailash is the highest peak in the
Kailash Range. The mountain is located
near Lake Manasarovar close to the
source of some of the longest Asian
rivers: the Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and
Ghaghara in India.
