THE STRUCTURE OF THE EARTH
THE EARTH’S LAYERS
Crust- outside layer of the earth and is made of solid rock, mostly
basalt and granite.
Upper Mantle- exists between the crust and the transition
zone. This layer is hard and brittle and is where tectonic plates exist.
Lower Mantle- is the region 400 to 1,800 miles below the earth’s
surface, made of solid rock. The lower mantle is characterized by
extremely high pressure and temperatures of around 3,871 degree
Celsius.
Outer Core-a hot dense ball of mostly iron. It has a radius of about
1,220 km. Temperature in this layer is about 5,200 degree Celsius.
The pressure is nearly 3.6 million atmosphere (atm).
THE EARTH’S INTERNAL HEAT
Heat energy plays a vital role in our planet.
Extreme factors that makes the world
livable. The heat inside of our planet moves
continents, build mountains and causes
earthquakes.
Sources of heat in our planet
1.Primordial heat
2.Radiogenic heat
PRIMORDIAL HEAT
Primordial Heat-the internal heat energy that
gradually gathered together by means of dispersion in
the planet during its few million years of evolution. Is
the accretional energy – the energy deposited during
the early formation of a planet.
The core is a storage of primordial heat that originates
from times of accretion when kinetic energy of colliding
particles was transformed into thermal energy. This
heat is constantly lost to the outer silicate layers of the
mantle and crust of the earth through convection and
conduction.
RADIOGENIC HEAT
Radiogenic heat-thermal energy released as
a result of spontaneous nuclear
disintegration. Involves the disintegration of
natural radioactive elements inside the earth
– like Uranium, Thorium and Potassium.
Uranium is a special kind of element
because when it decays, heat (radiogenic) is
produced.
HEAT TRANSFER
Conduction- governs the thermal conditions in almost entire solid
portions of the Earth and plays a very important role in the
lithosphere. Heat energy is transmitted through collisions between
neighboring atoms or molecules. Heat from the Earth's core and
radiation from the Sun is transferred to the surface of the Earth by
conduction.
Convection- dominates the thermal conditions in the zones where
large quantities of fluids (molten rocks) exist, and thus governs the
heat transport in the fluid outer core and the mantle
Radiation- is the least important mode of heat transport in the Earth.
The process of heat exchange between the Sun and the Earth, through
radiation, controls the temperatures at the Earth's surface.

  • 3. THE EARTH’S LAYERS Crust- outside layer of the earth and is made of solid rock, mostly basalt and granite. Upper Mantle- exists between the crust and the transition zone. This layer is hard and brittle and is where tectonic plates exist. Lower Mantle- is the region 400 to 1,800 miles below the earth’s surface, made of solid rock. The lower mantle is characterized by extremely high pressure and temperatures of around 3,871 degree Celsius. Outer Core-a hot dense ball of mostly iron. It has a radius of about 1,220 km. Temperature in this layer is about 5,200 degree Celsius. The pressure is nearly 3.6 million atmosphere (atm).
  • 4. THE EARTH’S INTERNAL HEAT Heat energy plays a vital role in our planet. Extreme factors that makes the world livable. The heat inside of our planet moves continents, build mountains and causes earthquakes. Sources of heat in our planet 1.Primordial heat 2.Radiogenic heat
  • 5. PRIMORDIAL HEAT Primordial Heat-the internal heat energy that gradually gathered together by means of dispersion in the planet during its few million years of evolution. Is the accretional energy – the energy deposited during the early formation of a planet. The core is a storage of primordial heat that originates from times of accretion when kinetic energy of colliding particles was transformed into thermal energy. This heat is constantly lost to the outer silicate layers of the mantle and crust of the earth through convection and conduction.
  • 6. RADIOGENIC HEAT Radiogenic heat-thermal energy released as a result of spontaneous nuclear disintegration. Involves the disintegration of natural radioactive elements inside the earth – like Uranium, Thorium and Potassium. Uranium is a special kind of element because when it decays, heat (radiogenic) is produced.
  • 7. HEAT TRANSFER Conduction- governs the thermal conditions in almost entire solid portions of the Earth and plays a very important role in the lithosphere. Heat energy is transmitted through collisions between neighboring atoms or molecules. Heat from the Earth's core and radiation from the Sun is transferred to the surface of the Earth by conduction. Convection- dominates the thermal conditions in the zones where large quantities of fluids (molten rocks) exist, and thus governs the heat transport in the fluid outer core and the mantle Radiation- is the least important mode of heat transport in the Earth. The process of heat exchange between the Sun and the Earth, through radiation, controls the temperatures at the Earth's surface.
