2. Removal of waste products
Certain waste products ( result of metabolism & result of the
functioning of the different physiological systems )- would become
highly toxic if they are allowed to accumulate .This could damage
tissues.
Excess of water leads to a number of complications.
Thus , waste products must be removed.
They continuously move into the blood stream which then carries them
to the excretory organs to be excreted – ( thrown out of the body)
3. EXCRETION - SIMPLIFIED
Excretion is the removal of wastes .
Wastes from ….
Cellular respiration
Digestion of food
Cellular Activities
4. Excretory System
The removal of metabolic waste from the body is called
Excretion and ..
The System which helps to remove this waste from the body
is known as Excretory System .
The Excretory system consists of many organs in our body
which helps in the removal of waste
5. Main Excreting Organs
Kidneys –Functional part of Urinary System
Lungs
Skin
Large Intestine.
Liver – Dextoxification centre
- Factually speaking – Liver is not an excreting organ but it
produces many products which are excreted elsewhere
- Toxins , drugs as well as alcohol are broken down in the liver and
then carried away to be excreted .
- Hence excess of smoking , medication & alcohol is extremely
harmful to liver.
7. Further – Excretion also takes through Eyes ,Ears , Nose
EYES –
Excretion through tears
Dirt & other unwanted materials get rid off through our eyes in the form of tears
NOSE –
Excretion through Nose is done in several ways.
Release of Carbondioxide
Nasal discharge
Sneezing etc…
EAR –
Through earwax.
When dirt & grime goes into the ear canal then our ear gland collects it & converts it into earwax
which is thrown out of body. This prevents germs & infections
9. LUNGS
2 LUNGS
Basic Structural & Functional unit is “Alveoli “- grape shaped units
It is through the thin walls of the Alveoli – which are surrounded by
capillaries that the Exchange of gases take place.
Carbon di oxide
Other gaseous substances produced from cell metabolism …
along with..water – vapour &
Some chemicals like Alcohol ….
are all excreted through Respiratory tract from the lungs
10. LUNGS - Yogic co-relation
ASANAS - like Chakrasan , Bhujangasan
Parvatasan ,Ardhyamtsyendrasan etc
increase lung capacity
PRANAYAMA-
All pranayama practices facilitate increase
in lung capacity thereby optimum excretion
of unwanted gases , toxins etc…
In Pranayama the exhalation – Rechak is
prolonged thus aiding in effective removal
of CO2 thereby facilitating more intake of O2
11. SHUDDHI KRIYA
KAPALBHATI – The CO2 percentage in blood stimulates the
exhalation through stimulation of the Respiratory Centre in the brain.
Practice of Kapalbhati causes continuous excretion of CO2 .
This results in reduction of CO2 percentage in the blood which
depresses the Respiratory centre leading to a cessation of Breath for a
few moments
( Apnoea )
12. LIVER - FUNCTIONS
Largest gland in the body – detoxification centre
Helps to filter the blood and regulate the composition of body fluids.
Detoxifies blood
Removes substances such as drugs , alcohol & certain toxins from the blood
Converts them to an inactive form which is excreted from the body by the kidneys
Breaks down Red Blood Cells
Excretes bile into the Gall bladder to help in Fat digestion
Forms Urea – Excess amino acids from protein digestion are broken down in the liver.
This is changed to Ammonia .Ammonia is toxic to body so converted tourea in the liver.
Kidneys filter out urea and excrete it from body in urine
15. SKIN FUNCTIONS – SUMMARY
Sensation –ability to detect changes in external environment temp/pressure
Thermoregulation- too hot – blood vessels dilate /too cold –blood vessels constrict
Protection- from microbes , abrasion , heat & chemicals.
Keratinocytes in skin responsible for water resistant property of skin
Excretion – * Water Urea Heat
Absorption
Synthesis & supply of Vitamin D
16. 2 million sweat glands in the skin which regulate body temperature
n also are responsible for excretion of water & salts from body.
ASANAS performed following PYS through relaxation of efforts
reduces building up of heat thereby preventing excess water loss
from skin.
Asan practice improves peripheral blood circulation thereby helps
in maintaining the health of the skin
As mentioned in Hatha Yog grantha practice of Lower type of
Pranayama stimulates or causes sweating
17. LARGE INTESTINE - FUNCTIONS
The 4 major functions of Large Intestine are …
Reabsorption of water & mineral ions such as Sodium ,
Potassium & chloride
Formation & temporary storage of faeces
Maintaining a resident population of over 500 species of
bacteria..
Bacterial fermentation of indigestible materials –
such as Ecoli ..which breaks down fibre to produce
Potassium which is then reabsobed
Also production of Vit B1 B2 B12 etc which are
reabsorbed
18. LARGE INTESTINE – YOGIC
CORELATION ASANAS - Most of the Cultural Asanas affect the Abdominal region ..and therefore the Large
Intestine as well
These cause negative or positive pressure in the abdominal cavity.
This remvnes the stagnation of blood in the abdominal cavity resulting in improved blood
circulation in this area …including that of the Large Intestine
This also gives good massage to the Internal Organs within the cavity incloding those of the
Excretory System thereby improves the Functioning capacity of this System
KRIYAS Like Uddiyan Agnisar & Nauli also by way of negative pressure results in improving
the working of this system .Peristaltic movements improved..thereby Functioning of the
Intestine improves
Also regulates Na –K balance in the body.
MUDRA – Practice of Ashwini Mudra tones up the Anal Sphincters
PRANAYAMA- It has been mentioned in Hatha Yog granthas that Pranayama practices
reduce the amount of Faeces & urine
20. URINARY SYSTEM – YOGIC CORELATION
ASANAS – such as… Sarvangasana , by way of the posture , affects kidneys in detection of Oxygen
tension . This in turn stimulates RBC production due Erythroprotein production
( As Erythroprotein production depends on Oxygen tension which affects RBC
production)
Other Asanas like Bhujangasan , Dhanurasan , Ardhyamatsyendrasan and many others gives
massage to kidneys thus improving blood circulation aound & within the kidneys thereby increasing the
functioning capacity of the kidneys as well as entire urinary system.
Halasan useful in polyuria condition .
PRANAYAMA
In abdominal breathing the diaphragm moves down during Inspiration .
Movement of diaphragm results in abdominal massage which leads to toning of the kidneys
ADH – Antidiuretic hormone is secreted through the Pituatory which is controlled by the
Hypothalums.
All yogic practices have a positive effect on the hypothalamus .As a result water
regulation , balance of salts & homeostasis is maintained through improved functioning
of the kidneys
21.
22. MUDRA & BANDHAS
The Urethra has 2 sphincters ..
External sphincter – under voluntary control and
Internal sphincter – under Involuntary control that is under the ANS .
The Sympathetic System contracts it preventing flow of semen into
bladder
Mudras like Vajroli Mudra bring about control on these sphincters .
Moolbandha also prevents Urinary Incontinence ( leakage of urine
during coughing etc especially in women
23. SHUDDHI KRIYA
DHOUTI
Neti- cleanses the Nasal cavity & associated
sinuses
Dhouti cleanses the Food pipe & stomach
Shankh Prakhshalan cleanses the entire GIT
Uddiyan Agnisar Nauli –
Facilitates the cleansing of Abdominal
region
Basti - cleansing of Rectum –Anal Region
Ganesh Kriya /Moolshodhan – Anus
Trataka- Excretion of negativity –
thoughts & emotions leading to Mind purification
Kapalbhati – washout of CO2 –physical-apnoea .Keval kumbak – purification of mind
28. EXCRETION AT MENTAL/EMOTIONAL
LEVEL ANTARANG SADHANA….
TRATAKA
These practices takes one inwards
makes the mind stable
balanced , focused & at peace
Decreases outside influences
Emotions balanced out hence
positive influence on Hypothalamus
Parasympathetic tone increases
Due to all this Negativity is removed.
Cleansing at Mental /Emotional levels
Excretion at thought level happens m
meaning Emotional Catharsis
Nurturing of pure thoughts. at the chitta level takes places through various yogic practices
