This Presentation shows the significance of Panchamahabhutas
The Body composition by 5 big elements.
Naturopathic and Yogic Interventions upon theory of Panchamahabhutas
2. According to the modern science , The earth is made
up of 5 components
Atmosphere, Hydrosphere,Lithosphere ,Mantle
and Core.
If we see it deeply ,The predominance of the actions
and their properties of Aakash and vayu are seen in
Atmosphere , Jala in Hydrosphere , Prithivi in
Lithosphere and Agni in Mantle and Core.
As the universe is made up of these 5 elements , being
a human as a microcosm of the nature , our body is
also constructed by these 5 elements only.
PANCHAMAHABHUTAS
3. “Sarvam Dravyam Panchabhoutikatvam” (Rig-Veda)
The Panchamahabhutas are the building blocks of the
everything on the earth.
Panchamahabhutas also called as Panchamahabhut in
Sanskrit.
The word Pancha means five , maha means big and bhutas
means elements.
These elements are Ether/Space or Akash , Air or Vayu ,
Fire or Agni , Water or jala and Earth or Prithivi.
PANCHAMAHABHUTAS
4. At the Cellular level -
A single cell of a living organism has these 5 elements as
their component.
The Earth or Prithivi – Structure of cell (cell membrane)
Water or Jala - cytoplasm of the cell
Fire or Agni - Various Metabolism
Ether or Akash - Space to accommodate the
various cell organelles.
Air or Vayu– Respiration and Movement of Nutrients,
ions and metabolic waste products
PANCHAMAHABHUTAS
5. Body Composition by 5 elements
Water – 72%
Air – 6%
Earth – 12%
Fire – 4%
Ether- 6%
Usually the Ether proportion can be changed or we can
say enhanced whereas remaining 4 elements remains
constant.
PANCHAMAHABHUTAS
6. Represents all the body channels , pores and empty spaces
Present in hollow cavities within the body.
It includes Cavities like cranial cavity, sinuses , thoracic
cavity, abdominal cavity, pelvic cavity and many other
cavities which are present in our whole body.
Its importance is to allow for the potential to move.
For example , the space in thoracic cavity allows the
movement of air through the respiratory tract and the
movement of blood i.e Cardiovascular Circulation through
the spaces within the chambers of heart.
1. Ether/Space or Aakash
7. Qualities of Ether Element
• Clear, light and subtle.
All sound is transmitted through space so related to
sense of hearing
Object of the sensory organ - Sound or Shabda.
1. Ether/Space or Aakash
8. Represents the gaseous form of the matter.
• Air is the driving force behind all the movements or
air initiates and directs the motion .
• This element controls all the voluntary as well as
involuntary body movements.
• It alters at both physical as well as at mental level
because the sensory as well as motor impulse are
governed by this element.
• Responsible for the movements - expansion
,contraction and vibration.
2. Air or Vayu
9. Example –
In Cardiovascular System , it governs the circulation ,
movement of plasma , nutrients and bloods likewise if
we see at Gastrointestinal system , it governs the
movement of nutrients through the process of digestion
, assimilation and absorption.
Qualities of Air Element
• Mobile, dry, light, cold.
Related to sense of touch .
Object of the sensory organ - Touch or Sparsha.
2. Air or Vayu
10. Represents the metabolic state of the body.
This element have the power to transform the state of
any substance and also provides the energy for the
metabolic activities in our body.
This element helps to provide energy which is
required for all the activities in our body and also
controls the body temperature as well as metabolic
rate.
As we have heard that energy can neither be created
nor be destroyed but can be transformed into one form
to another
Fire element transform energy in the food containing
Vitamins , Carbohydrates , fats , minerals to the
energy which is utilised by our cells.
3. Fire or Agni
11. Qualities of Fire Element
• Hot, sharp,colour,dry,light.
Related to the vision because of its qualities .
Object of the sensory organ – Vision or Roopa
3. Fire or Agni
12. Represents Liquid state of the body.
Governs the flow of constituents of all fluids from
Blood to bodily fluids like Digestive juices , plasma,
saliva, urine and so on.
These bodily fluid move between the cells and vessels
which are carrying nutrients , hormones, metabolic
waste etc.
Qualities of Water Element –
• cool, liquid, soft.
Object of the sensory organ – Taste or Rasa.
4. Water or Jala
13. Represents the solid state of matter.
Highest density among all the elements.
All the solid structure in the body are represented by
earth element like bones , hair, teeth, muscles, tendons,
bones etc.
Responsible for the structure , shape and strength of
body.
5.Earth or Prithvi
14. Qualities of Fire Element
• Heavy, coarse, hard, dull, stable and gross.
Object of the sensory organ – Smell or Gandha
5.Earth or Prithvi
15. Balance of 5 elements – Good Health
Imbalance of 5 elements – Prevalence of Disease
For example excess of water element body can cause
oedema whereas its deficiency causes dehydration
which further leads to different types of diseases and
illnesses.
Naturopathic and yogic interventions helps to balance
the 5 elements result in conserving and promoting the
vital energy in the body
Naturopathic And Yogic Interventions
based on Panchamahabhutas Theory
16. Ether/space or Aakash
It has balancing and purifying properties.
Includes naturopathic treatment like
Fasting
There are different types of fasting and if we talk about
therapeutic Fasting which has 3 types, short fasting ,
intermittent fasting, long fasting which further includes
juice, water, mono-diet fasting and provides the medium
to the body for better elimination of accumulated toxins.
Rest and Relaxation
Naturopathic And Yogic Interventions
based on Panchamahabhutas Theory
17. Air or Vayu
It has mobilising property.
Helps to maintain the homeostasis in the body.
It includes
Ozone therapy which includes mainly ozone bath
Breathing Exercises
Massage
Yogic breathing
Pranayama
Naturopathic And Yogic Interventions
based on Panchamahabhutas Theory
18. Fire or Agni
It has a regulatory property.
It includes
Heliotherapy which includes Sunbath
Chromo therapy which uses different colours
Naturopathic And Yogic Interventions
based on Panchamahabhutas Theory
19. Jala / water
It has eliminative property
It includes
Hydrotherapy
• Water has cooling ,heating ,diluting and cleansing
property , used at its 3 forms that is solid/ice , liquid
and gas/vapour at different temperatures.
• Can be given in the form of packs, douches,
baths, enema etc. For example , Gastroheapatic pack,
chest pack,percussion douche,cervical douche,arm bath,
foot bath etc.
Naturopathic And Yogic Interventions
based on Panchamahabhutas Theory
20. Earth / Prithvi
It has healing and detoxifying property.
It includes
Mud Therapy
Which further include mud pack, are applied mainly on
abdomen and eyes and Mud bath which is applied on
whole body and exposed to sunlight.
Diet Therapy
The food that we eat grows on soil only that’s why
it is included in the Earth element.
