• Paramyxovirus- RNA virus
• Genus- Rubulavirus
• Predilection for- glandular tissue and Nervous tissue
• Only one serotype
• Only one antigenic strain
• Natural infection- life long immunity
• Age- 5 to 9 years
• Tends to be more severe in adult
• Maternal antibody- protection upto 6 months
• Spread by- droplet infection
• Incubation period-2 to 3 weeks (average 18 days)

1) Saliva- swab taken from surface of Stenson's
duct

• Painful swelling of either
one or both parotid
glands.
