THREE.YOUNG PEOPLE OPERATE
INNOVATIVE START-UPS
WITH GROWTH POTENTIAL:
The following activities and trainings to support start-ups were organized:
A. Training of trainers in Bayankhongor province
It is imperative to create a supportive environment for start-up development at the soum and local community
level and build the local capacity in order to ensure the ownership and sustainability. In this context, a training
of trainers has been organized with the aim to prepare trainers, build their capacity and create networking. A total
of 29 people were trained including representatives of the local government and non-government organizations
mandated to promote a start-up entrepreneurship, and volunteers, mentors and start-up entrepreneurs. During
the training, an introduction was made on the pilot project and its aim to promote youth start-up businesses,
and presentations were given on “What is Start-up business”, “Social & Google apps” and “Business Model
Canvas”.
B. Boot camp training
Design Thinking: A design thinking session was organized to develop the participants’ competency on cre-
ativity and innovation as well as the ability to find durable solutions. The participants in pairs were tasked to
produce a hand-made product within two hours timeframe taking into account the need, taste and wish of the
partner.
“Business Model Canvas” tool: Using a BMC tool, the participants were assisted in effectively planning and
developing start-up business or project ideas, and putting the ideas into business operation. The participants
have divided into groups and developed a canvas with the guidance of the instructor.
Rural start-up business: Lecture on rural start-up business development was organized covering issues such
as start-up business development in rural community, key concepts of start-up business and entrepreneur-
ship, major differences between small and big businesses, best practices and examples of experiences of
local and international start-ups.
C. Pitch event in Bayankhongor province
A 3 days “Pitch” event covering a 54 hours timeline has been organized to facilitate a talented team building
process, and to capacitate the participants to explore innovative business ideas, create business plans,
establish a company and facilitate fundraising. A total of 50 participants have benefited from the Pitch event

Promote the development of start-up businesses in the local community, cultivate
a start-up ecosystem at aimag and soum level, support start-ups led by youth, and
build the capacity and mindset of the local youth to manage start-up businesses.
The pilot programme has involved active participation of the Governor’s office of
Bayankhongor aimag, Governor’s office of Khan-Uul District, VET School representa-
tives, Youth development center representatives, private companies in Bayankhongor
aimag and Khan-Uul district, Labour and Welfare Service Office, University of Science
and Technology, Business incubator center, as well as the participants of the pilot
program. The program has been organized in partnership with the Start-up Mongolia
NGO and Labour and Welfare Service Division of Khan-Uul district.

Local youth were inspired to start their own start-up business, their knowledge on the benefits and importance
of the start-up have increased, their capacity to work in a team and identify and use appropriate strategies
have improved;
International start-up practices were introduced to the participants with the aim to provide information and
knowledge on how to start properly start-up business and related practical lessons learned from the practices;
10 new start-ups that developed a new and innovative business model were formed;
A group of instructors was formed consisting of 21 people including volunteers and representatives of the
local government and non-government organizations mandated to promote start-up entrepreneurship devel-
opment. A capacity-building training has been provided to the instructors group on creation of an ecosystem
supportive for start-up business development, building community and network, and development of busi-
ness models;
The first place winner team was awarded with the seed fund that enables them to take up their business fur-
ther. The winner team has also received an award ticket to participate in the next stage of the pilot programme
which is an acceleration program.
D. Pitch event in Khan-Uul district
A 3 days Pitch event which has been organized through a 54 hours timeframe has been conducted for the
participants of Khan-Uul district. A total of 11 business ideas were selected for the Pitch event from the total
36 business ideas generated by 50 selected participants. 11 teams were formed around the business ideas to
develop the ideas further into more comprehensive business proposals. Guidance and advice were provided to
the teams by business mentors from the Start-up Mongolia NGO, Development solutions, Khasu Holding LLC,
World Bank (international consultant) and Wild digital agency. The Pitch event has awarded the following teams
for their best and innovative ideas:

START-UP ACCELERATOR PROGRAMME3.3
The accelerator programme is part of startup support scheme of the project. This is the first programme
organized by the project. Five start-up teams who successfully participated in the project start-up pitch
events organized in Darkhan-Uul province and Khan-Uul and Bayangol districts of Ulaanbaatar continued
with the accelerator training with the total duration of five weeks. The details of the training are below:

Provide assistance and guidance to the selected start-ups for the duration of five weeks
to build their capacity, improve business ideas and further develop initial businesses to
become more sustainable.
The start-up accelerator training was organized in partnership with Startup Mongolia NGO
involving five successful start-up teams from Darkhan-Uul province and Khan-Uul and
Bayangol districts of Ulaanbaatar. It was facilitated by six key trainers and seven mentors.

Next steps: The project will organize a demo day where start-up teams will pres-
ent their business ideas to investors for potential fundraising. Seed funds will be
provided by the project for start-up teams that have successfully participated in the
pilot programme. Start-up support scheme will be reviewed and improved based on
results and lessons learnt during pilots to be implemented in 2017.
Participating teams strengthened their knowl-
edge on such topics as customer development;
sales purchase agreement; how to offer value to
customers;how to make a pitch for investment;
what is Minimum Viable Product and how to test
it before starting a full product; how to use more
detailed design thinking approach for making and
improving prototype of their product; and how to
do a financial planning, and properly calculate
business income and expenditures. During the
training, the participants applied their acquired
theoretical knowledge into practice by preparing
their initial full business models; estimating their
detailed investment required for their business;
and designing their own logo and fliers.

The winner-first place team was given access to further business
accelerator training program to improve their business idea and
shall receive seed fund from the project after its completion. The
second and third place teams received vouchers to receive finan-
cial support from Aimag Labour and Welfare Department (through
Employment Promotion fund).

kinetic power plant into innovative startup business proposal with smaller but well defined

Provide assistance and guidance to the selected start-ups for the duration of five weeks to build their ca-
pacity, improve business ideas and further develop initial businesses to become more sustainable.
The start-up accelerator training was organized in partnership with Startup Mongolia NGO involving three
successful start-up teams fromBayangol and Khan-Uul Districts of Ulaanbaatar. It was facilitated by seven
trainers/mentors.
Results:
Participating teams strengthened their knowledge on such
topics as customer development; sales purchase agreement;
how to offer value to customers; how to make a pitch for in-
vestment; what is Minimum Viable Product and how to test it
before starting a full product; how to use more detailed design
thinking approach for making and improving prototype of their
product; and how to do a financial planning, and properly cal-
culate business income and expenditures. At the end of the
training teams were able to clearly identify members’ roles and
tasks and prepared their first initial full business models.
As part of Accelerator training program the following two sep-
arate trainings were organized successfully.
“Training on creative marketing and sales skills training”:
The training, aimed to provide a systematic knowledge and skills
in marketing and sales, was facilitated by Ms.G.Oyungerel, Devel-
opment Solutions NGO and Ms.Araki Shino, JICA consultant. As a
result, the participants prepared their initial sales and marketing
plan, and developed their strategy on how to improve their sales.
They also succeeded to see their business sales activity realisti-
cally and develop their plans accordingly. Half of the participants
agreed to take further individual counselling from the trainers.
“Training on basic understanding of financial
management and accounting in start-up business”:
An interactive training, aimed to provide young entrepreneurs
and start-ups with basic understanding of financial management,
was facilitated by Achit Consulting Company. As a result, partic-
ipants learnt about the basic concept of financial management,
how to extract necessary information from the balance sheets
and analyze that information for everyday as well as strategically
important decisions. Participants are now able to manage their
business as a finance expert, and assess and reduce potential
risks, and make decisions based on their business finance data.

dermatological problem for over 20 years, and therefore I wanted to make a product that would

ed to run a start-up business, they encounter many obstacles such as getting bank loan. Banks
put high requirements, and assistant for us, start-ups is rather limited. This project was able to
see this gap, and I’m very happy to receive this opportunity. In a near future, I’m working to have
my own place for production and marketing of the products.”

way that it gathered many local youth, taught them many things, had them compete according to

  • 1. 20 THREE.YOUNG PEOPLE OPERATE INNOVATIVE START-UPS WITH GROWTH POTENTIAL: The following activities and trainings to support start-ups were organized: A. Training of trainers in Bayankhongor province It is imperative to create a supportive environment for start-up development at the soum and local community level and build the local capacity in order to ensure the ownership and sustainability. In this context, a training of trainers has been organized with the aim to prepare trainers, build their capacity and create networking. A total of 29 people were trained including representatives of the local government and non-government organizations mandated to promote a start-up entrepreneurship, and volunteers, mentors and start-up entrepreneurs. During the training, an introduction was made on the pilot project and its aim to promote youth start-up businesses, and presentations were given on “What is Start-up business”, “Social & Google apps” and “Business Model Canvas”. B. Boot camp training Design Thinking: A design thinking session was organized to develop the participants’ competency on cre- ativity and innovation as well as the ability to find durable solutions. The participants in pairs were tasked to produce a hand-made product within two hours timeframe taking into account the need, taste and wish of the partner. “Business Model Canvas” tool: Using a BMC tool, the participants were assisted in effectively planning and developing start-up business or project ideas, and putting the ideas into business operation. The participants have divided into groups and developed a canvas with the guidance of the instructor. Rural start-up business: Lecture on rural start-up business development was organized covering issues such as start-up business development in rural community, key concepts of start-up business and entrepreneur- ship, major differences between small and big businesses, best practices and examples of experiences of local and international start-ups. C. Pitch event in Bayankhongor province A 3 days “Pitch” event covering a 54 hours timeline has been organized to facilitate a talented team building process, and to capacitate the participants to explore innovative business ideas, create business plans, establish a company and facilitate fundraising. A total of 50 participants have benefited from the Pitch event 2016.11.03-07 Five days Bayankhongor province 176 people (97 female, 79 male) Promote the development of start-up businesses in the local community, cultivate a start-up ecosystem at aimag and soum level, support start-ups led by youth, and build the capacity and mindset of the local youth to manage start-up businesses. The pilot programme has involved active participation of the Governor’s office of Bayankhongor aimag, Governor’s office of Khan-Uul District, VET School representa- tives, Youth development center representatives, private companies in Bayankhongor aimag and Khan-Uul district, Labour and Welfare Service Office, University of Science and Technology, Business incubator center, as well as the participants of the pilot program. Delgermaa, 3rd year student at Polytechnic College, “Ener” team member FIRST PLACE: “Green drill” team- Project proposal on “Hole drilling equipment for planting trees, forest- ry, mining restoration services” SECOND PLACE: “Shijir” team– Project proposal on “Bath bombs made with whirl bone oil” THIRD PLACE: “Smart light” team- Project proposal on “Lighting system with new design” The Pitch event has awarded the following teams for their best and innovative business ideas: FIRST PLACE: “Mazaakhai” team- Project proposal on “Production of children’s yogurt based on own resources” SECOND PLACE: “Ener” team – Project propos- al on “Wool socks production in Bayankhongor aimag” THIRD PLACE: “NuNomad” team- Project proposal on “Modern deel dresses for local girls” Local youth were inspired to start their own start-up business, their knowledge on the benefits and importance of the start-up have increased, their capacity to work in a team and identify and use appropriate strategies have improved; International start-up practices were introduced to the participants with the aim to provide information and knowledge on how to start properly start-up business and related practical lessons learned from the practices; 10 new start-ups that developed a new and innovative business model were formed; A group of instructors was formed consisting of 21 people including volunteers and representatives of the local government and non-government organizations mandated to promote start-up entrepreneurship devel- opment. A capacity-building training has been provided to the instructors group on creation of an ecosystem supportive for start-up business development, building community and network, and development of busi- ness models; The first place winner team was awarded with the seed fund that enables them to take up their business fur- ther. The winner team has also received an award ticket to participate in the next stage of the pilot programme which is an acceleration program. D. Pitch event in Khan-Uul district A 3 days Pitch event which has been organized through a 54 hours timeframe has been conducted for the participants of Khan-Uul district. A total of 11 business ideas were selected for the Pitch event from the total 36 business ideas generated by 50 selected participants. 11 teams were formed around the business ideas to develop the ideas further into more comprehensive business proposals. Guidance and advice were provided to the teams by business mentors from the Start-up Mongolia NGO, Development solutions, Khasu Holding LLC, World Bank (international consultant) and Wild digital agency. The Pitch event has awarded the following teams for their best and innovative ideas: Very successful - 50% Successful - 43% Average – 7% Very successful - 82% Successful - 16% Average – 2% Evaluation: Evaluation: “Very effective training that set the path for youth to start their future careers” Mrs.D.Otgonkhand, “Ulziit” VTPC instructor at Bayankhongor province through receiving advice and guidance from business mentors and were equipped with relevant knowledge and skills for entrepreneurship development and business ownership.

BAYANGOL DISTRICT OF ULAANBAATAR The total of 39 business ideas was presented by the participants, of which 11 innovative ideas were select- ed to proceed with developing their business proposals further with assistance from mentors. The following teams were awarded for their best and innovative business ideas: FIRST PLACE: “Bee” team for their proposal on “Organic honey based on their resources”. SECOND PLACE: “Mongol medal” team for their proposal on “Medals with Mongolian unique design”. THIRD PLACE: “Khaan welding” team for their proposal on “Bath- room towel dryer using non-corrosive material”. Very successful - 52% Successful - 33% Average – 13%Participants’ evaluation: “Within only 3 days I had a chance to improve the business idea, which I had in my mind for a while, into a concrete business proposal. Further on, given the opportunity to get enrolled in ac- celerator training, my business idea will come to life within the matter of 4-5 months. This start-up programme is very beneficial to us because it responds to all these needs.   • 6. 21 YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROJECT Week 3, Training on detailed design thinking methodology | 2017.03.03 S.Erdenebat, Director of Startup Mongolia NGO, presenting on Customer discovery process, Week 1 | 2017.02.18 Week 2, Training on business model generation | 2017.02.25 START-UP ACCELERATOR PROGRAMME3.3 The accelerator programme is part of startup support scheme of the project. This is the first programme organized by the project. Five start-up teams who successfully participated in the project start-up pitch events organized in Darkhan-Uul province and Khan-Uul and Bayangol districts of Ulaanbaatar continued with the accelerator training with the total duration of five weeks. The details of the training are below: February 18 - March 25, 2017 Ulaanbaatar 20 people (9 female, 11 male) Provide assistance and guidance to the selected start-ups for the duration of five weeks to build their capacity, improve business ideas and further develop initial businesses to become more sustainable. The start-up accelerator training was organized in partnership with Startup Mongolia NGO involving five successful start-up teams from Darkhan-Uul province and Khan-Uul and Bayangol districts of Ulaanbaatar. It was facilitated by six key trainers and seven mentors. Date: Location Participants: Objective: Participation: Outcome: Next steps: The project will organize a demo day where start-up teams will pres- ent their business ideas to investors for potential fundraising. Seed funds will be provided by the project for start-up teams that have successfully participated in the pilot programme. Start-up support scheme will be reviewed and improved based on results and lessons learnt during pilots to be implemented in 2017. Participating teams strengthened their knowl- edge on such topics as customer development; sales purchase agreement; how to offer value to customers;how to make a pitch for investment; what is Minimum Viable Product and how to test it before starting a full product; how to use more detailed design thinking approach for making and improving prototype of their product; and how to do a financial planning, and properly calculate business income and expenditures. During the training, the participants applied their acquired theoretical knowledge into practice by preparing their initial full business models; estimating their detailed investment required for their business; and designing their own logo and fliers.

The second and third place teams received vouchers to receive finan- cial support from Aimag Labour and Welfare Department (through Employment Promotion fund). Very successful - 65% Successful - 30% Average – 5%Participants’ evaluation: “Thanks to the startup program we were able to convert the big project idea on establishing kinetic power plant into innovative startup business proposal with smaller but well defined target group. We came up with a proposal to establish a micro power station with the ca- pacity of producing energy for 2-3 rural households. ZAVKHAN AIMAG The total of 28 business ideas was presented by the participants, of which 10 innovative ideas were select- ed to proceed with developing their business proposals further with assistance from mentors. The following teams were awarded for their best and innovative business ideas: FIRST PLACE: “Altai organic tea” team for their proposal on “producing organic green tea by local organic raw materials”. SECOND PLACE: “Negtgel” team for their proposal on “producing the coal based eco fuel”. THIRD PLACE: “Artichoke” team for their proposal on “making artichoke products at the aimag”. The winner-first place team was given access to further business accelerator training program to improve their business idea and shall receive seed fund from the project after its completion. In total four teams, including the second and third place teams as Very successful - 65% Successful - 32% Average – 4%Participants’ evaluation: “We heard about this start-up program over a year ago and were anxiously waiting for it to be organized in our aimag. Our business idea was to produce packet tea with sulkhir flour which has antibacterial effect and if used daily can be a good preventative method against diseases. Results: Participating teams strengthened their knowledge on such topics as customer development; sales purchase agreement; how to offer value to customers; how to make a pitch for in- vestment; what is Minimum Viable Product and how to test it before starting a full product; how to use more detailed design thinking approach for making and improving prototype of their product; and how to do a financial planning, and properly cal- culate business income and expenditures. At the end of the training teams were able to clearly identify members’ roles and tasks and prepared their first initial full business models. As part of Accelerator training program the following two sep- arate trainings were organized successfully. “Training on creative marketing and sales skills training”: The training, aimed to provide a systematic knowledge and skills in marketing and sales, was facilitated by Ms.G.Oyungerel, Devel- opment Solutions NGO and Ms.Araki Shino, JICA consultant. As a result, the participants prepared their initial sales and marketing plan, and developed their strategy on how to improve their sales. They also succeeded to see their business sales activity realisti- cally and develop their plans accordingly. Half of the participants agreed to take further individual counselling from the trainers. “Training on basic understanding of financial management and accounting in start-up business”: An interactive training, aimed to provide young entrepreneurs and start-ups with basic understanding of financial management, was facilitated by Achit Consulting Company. As a result, partic- ipants learnt about the basic concept of financial management, how to extract necessary information from the balance sheets and analyze that information for everyday as well as strategically important decisions. Participants are now able to manage their business as a finance expert, and assess and reduce potential risks, and make decisions based on their business finance data.
