English Homework – zilan elma The glistening sun scorching my eyes bring me back to consciousness , i have only a few seconds of silence
before i am overcome with an unbearable screech next to me . "AGH , no , no, THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING!" My body halts up immediately at the
sound of the familiar voice and without warning vague memories of the past hours flood back into my brain , the panic , the need for survival , the
hell . "Rose , rose are you– YOU'RE BLEEDING ROSE YOU'RE BLEEDING" cries Alice , after a few years of being friends with her , this became
her casual voice , panic ,worry and utter depression . "I– i think i'm fine , it's not that big of a deal " i reply trying to sound as normal as possible .
When i eventually open my eyes i can finally see my surroundings and the first thing i notice is the clear blue water crashing with the golden beach
, the clean sky and the smell of fresh air . Scanning the area around me , i realise that Alice and i aren't the only survivors , there's : Arthur , Damien
and Claudet . There all unconscious so Alice makes it her duty to try and wake them . During these few minutes i decide to process our situation ,
where we are , what the hell happened and what we're going to do now . Looking behind me i'm hit with a rich , lush forest looking to be full of life
and heaven like . Peacefully glaring at the woodland i feel like my problems float away and that i'm as free as a feather able to float into the clouds and
never return, leaving behind the inferno of a past that i have and creating a new life for myself ....show more content...

Short Story
An hour later, his leather jacket and helmet stowed with his motorbike, Phenix dropped from the twenty–foot high rammed earth wall of the temple
where Kalyssandra and the monks lived, landing like a sleek shadow on the ground. He crouched low, using the heavy shrubs as cover to scan the
temple perched precariously close to the natural ridgeline of the peak. There was no need for the security of a wall to cover the rear, as an intruder
would need a mode of flight to gain entrance. As for mortals, the elements and an unequivocal death resulting from a plunge to the jagged ravines
below acted as a good deterrent. Even in the soft sable lighting, he could see the garden was a magnificent recreation and miniaturization of the larger

deflect ghosts and unwanted spirits from entering the room faced him. Phenix angled his head, first checked left then right before walking toward
the end of the screen to peer into the interior of the large room, lit within from the soft yellow glow of a row of candles sitting in small bronze

you on your stealth, stranger," a soft tenor voice answered. From out behind the shelter of the altar, a tall figure cloaked in darkness stepped.

Original Writing: Short Story
It was the night of the year that few children can sleep. The night when everyone hopes that snow will fall and they will wake up to a garden of
glistening diamonds grown by the morning sun. It was Christmas Eve.
As many had hoped, snow was falling. It slowly covered the houses and streets in a thick blanket. The moon shone her silver light down on the
white world, and but for one, there was nobody to view the kind of beauty that things such as love and dreams are made of. The only one there to see
the spectacle was a small boy of five, or six years.
This little boy possessed a beauty not of this earth, a beauty that surpassed even all that surrounded him. His...show more content...
On the night that every other child wished for toys, and puppies, this little boy wished for love. And nothing more.
Finally, the little boy came to a stop, not wanting to ever take another step again. He raised his downcast eyes, and in front of him stood a church.
He remembered that he had been to church before, and the building that loomed above him stirred vague memories. The boy made himself stumble
a few more steps, and pressed his face to the glass door he had arrived at. He looked in, and saw the church was lit up inside. There was light coming
from behind a man on a big cross, and two huge Christmas trees shone in heavenly splendor. Looking at the man on the cross, he had a faint
recollection. He half–remembered, a long time ago, that someone reading from a big book had said that the man on the cross would come on
Christmas. That he came every Christmas.
The little boy supposed that if anyone would help him, it would be the man inside. He loved everyone. So, the little boy laid down in front of the
church, and as he slipped off into sleep, a glimmer of hope, that the man would come and save him from the cold and loneliness, warmed his heart.
The snow continued to fall, and bells jingled far in the distance. Presents were laid under trees, and visions of sugar plums danced in most children's
heads. But not the little boy who slept on the church steps under the winter

Essay on Short Stories and Poetry
Short Stories and Poetry There are many different forms of writing that all fall under the name literature. These different ways to create literature are
often categorized into specific genres. Some of the genres have more in common with each other than others. Two genres, theshort story and the poem,
share many similar aspects. Both the short story and the poem can successfully send powerful messages or tell complex stories in a very short amount
of words. Both genres contain carefully manipulated language that quickly yet effectively establishes the meaning of the short story or poem. Point of
view is a prominent aspect in controlling short stories and poetry. The works are thus often told in the first...show more content...
Short literary works are confined to the boundaries on length according to their specific genre; they don't have time for lengthy or slow introductions.
William Faulkner's "A Rose of Emily" (p. 443) begins immediately with a startling statement about Miss Emily's death. Faulkner creates a first
sentence that describes how "our whole town went to her funeral" (1), using of course the first person form of "we" (28, 43, 46, etc...) The narrator
is most likely one of the townspeople who represents the point of view of the entire town. Through the use of plural first person narration, the author
makes the reader feel as if though they are part of the story, grasping his or her interest more quickly. Faulkner employs this first person narration in
the first sentence of his story, thus immediately capturing the reader's attention. The reader's engagement in the story also adds to its emotionality. By
feeling as though he or she is a part of the story, the reader often feels sadness, joy and other emotions with the characters of the story. When the
townspeople were "surprised when Homer Barron...was gone" (46), the use of "we" (46) forces the reader to feel the same confusion and shock that
the townspeople do. The first person helps to enrich the variability and appeal of the short story.
This use of first person to strengthen the feeling of the

Short Story: First Person Narrative Fiction
The short story is told through a first person narrator, this is due to the narrator is a child called Elizabeth and that she uses words such as "I" and
"We". We get a glimpse of Elizabeth's thoughts and actions through the quote "With the sun in my eyes, I couldn't see my mammy's face, not even
squinting with both arms above my head and my head tilted". Everything we know about the story is something that Elisabeth has experienced and
therefore our knowledge is limited by her view of the world.

Short Story The river was roaring past the children and their teacher, as the group of kids tried in vain to understand the teacher's inaudible mutterings.
Not one of them could understand or comprehend what the teacher was saying, and being the lively, uncontrollable brats that they were, they didn't
care anyway. When the teacher stopped talking, he motioned for the children to follow him along the steep, mud–covered banks of the river. The
children understood this and scuttled after him, along the dangerous route that he had selected for them.

their faces. Chris, who was quite tubby, and the worst swimmer, couldn't fight the current, and was swept downstream screaming in terror. Matthew and
Harry however, fought their way back to the banks of the river, petrified at the thought of what might happen to their friend.
While all of this was happening, the torrential rain persisted. So much so, that the teacher decided to take the class – as quickly as possible – to some

Once she is out of sight, I bend down beside of Damian. "Please. Don't say anything about my feelings for Axel. If you do I'm going to kill you." I beg.
"Not before I kill you." Before I can say anything, there is a sharp pain in my side. It was a hit of pressure and then it was released and replaced with
excruciating pain. I scream as loud as I can expect that will make the pain go away. Blood spreads out under me and soaks my shirt. I roll onto my
back. The stars in the night sky above me look like glowing white streaks. My body becomes heavy with fatigue and I drift to sleep. "Cynthia!"
Someone whispers, causing me to wake up. "Cynthia." They repeat. The voice. I have heard it before. "Axel." I strain. "Yes, yes. It's me." He clasps

an hour of sitting against the door to the bathroom, I finally knock. "Do you wanna talk?" I ask. Complete silence. "Axel?" Still no response. Panic

her. She was about to push the button when her brother said "Do you know what that button will do?"
"No, but it can't be bad," said Taylor.
"What if something bad does happens Taylor," said Terrin. Terrin was very worried, and so was her brother Tyler.

Reflection Of A Short Story
I enjoy writing short stories because the activity allows me to express my creativity and speak my mind. However, I often have trouble finishing
compositions, and my English professors will often tell me I need to improve my work. Recently, I wrote a short story titled "Unexpected" for a
fiction–writing class and made countless changes to the tale based on several guidelines. The revisions to "Unexpected" have benefited my story, but
I could have done more to improve it. My original story served as an impromptu launching pad for the revisions, which expanded my work into a
more stable, detailed narrative. However, I probably should have asked for help from tutors and my fiction professor, Jackie because they understand

But three methods of revisions helped me better understand the changes I made to my narrative. First, I printed my original work and jotted down
revisions based on 25 questions from a book I study in fiction class, What If? Writing Exercises for Fiction Writers. These notes helped me add a
wide variety of details to my story. Next, I typed my new story and used a grammar check website called PaperRater to improve the style of my
tale. This aspect includes, of course, grammar, but also transitional phrases (I am not sure if those are important in a short story) as well as
vocabulary. And eventually, I tweaked my composition after carefully reading my story to myself. I learned that reading your own work aloud helps
you further comprehend any revisions you should make. As a result of following these revision guidelines, I improved my story dramatically; it more
than tripled the word count of my story to about one thousand words. Furthermore, I usually only use PaperRater for revising fiction and nonfiction
works I write for English classes. My new technique of modifying my narratives have truly expanded my stories as well as my imagination. But despite
these accomplishments, I could have further improved my story. When I wrote a poetry explication essay for nonfiction writing class, I did not just
turn to PaperRater. I asked my professor, Ben, for help writing the essay during his office hours. I wish I could have done

The short stories "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Mocomber" were both written by world renowned author Ernest
Hemingway. The two stories are written completely unrelated to each other; however, both stories have vast similarities in the time and place in
which they take place. Hemingway is a writer that is very methodical in his word choices. When reading these two stories a second time the reader
finds considerable differences in the writing style the author uses in each story. To demonstrate, three sentences from each story will be compared and
contrasted to show the differences in word usage, word connotation, and to find which story is written better. The initial pair...show more content...
The word "plummeted" as defined in the American Heritage Dictionary "is to fall straight down; plunge".
The two words are close in meaning; however, "plummeted" is a better word for the sheer reason that the reader can directly visualize the vultures
dive toward earth. When the word "plummeted" is heard a person thinks of plunging to death or fall at in incredible rate. "Plummeted" is much more
dramatic and defining then the word "planed." The word "Planned" could have various images connected with it. "Planed" leaves the reader too many
options when visualizing the vultures decent to the ground. For example the reader might visualize the vulture gliding down to the ground or
zigzagging to the ground. The word 'Plummeted" is a better defined and more dramatic word. Making the sentence, "On the far bank of the stream
Macomber could see, above the trees, vultures circling and plummeting down," the better sentence of the two.
The next two sentences, "'You Bitch,' he said," from the "Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "'Why not let up on the bitchery just a little, Margot,' Macomber
said, cutting the eland steak and putting some mashed potato, gravy and carrot on the down–turned fork that tined through the piece of meat," again
have similarities. For example, in each sentence the husband is calling his wife a bitch of sorts; however, it is the use of this word that makes these

The End of the Road
It all started to go downhill when my boyfriend started speaking to another girl behind my back, sending text messages and meeting up with her for
a 'chat' as he used to say. I never believed anything he said. Neither did my friends or family. Why should we have? Before we got together he was
known as a player and someone who continuously flirted with girls even if he had a girlfriend, but after we got together he toned it down and I thought
he had changed. I'm fed up with the way he is treating me, I know I deserve better. How did I know that the day I decided to confront him was the
day I would never see him again?

And that's when she told me. ''It's Daniel'' she said. ''He's been in an accident'' I fell to the floor, I hadn't spoken to him, I've been ignoring him, what
have I done?!
''Is he hurt? What kind of accident?'' I asked her. She looked up at me through the tears in her eyes and I knew just from the look she gave me that it
was more than a broken bone.
He was dead.
After Daniel's death I didn't leave my room for about a week, I didn't want to face the world, I didn't want to talk to anyone, I just wanted to be alone
with my thoughts. But all I could think about was 'what if?' What if I hadn't ignored him? What if we weren't arguing, would he have been at mine that
night?
I went on my laptop about a week after, I didn't look at my phone or my laptop because I didn't want any sympathy comments as I knew it would only
make me feel worse, but that night I just wanted to see what people had put on his Facebook wall, the moment I logged onto my account, I had
thousands of notifications. I switched my laptop straight off; I knew I shouldn't have gone on in the first place.
The next day was his funeral, I didn't think I would be able to cope, but I knew I would have lots of people there to support me, but I knew it would be
harder for his family than it would be for

The Odyssey: A Short Story
The acrid scent of stew and greasy meat hung in the air of the Wailing Walrus. Outside there was a long winter's night setting in with a bitter bite but
it was hard to tell inside with its heat and clamor. The tavern was nestled in a small, nondescript port town and while it wasn't the only one, it was
the most popular for some undefinable reason. Filled to the brim with men of all sorts. Sailors, merchants, traveling dignitaries, even a few lesser
nobles from neighboring lands and a few women littered among them mainly to serve or offer ornament to the tables. There was little to be felt in
terms of heat far away from the hearth as one pale woman made her way around the scattered groups of men with consummate ease. She had spent
years learning

Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories
Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories––
Landlady by Roald Dahl and Chemistry by Graham Swift
There are lots of great short stories out there, but in my opinion, both 'Chemistry' by Graham Swift and 'The Landlady' by Roald Dahl are two of the
most unique and effective stories. They share both similarities and differences throughout. Comparing and contrasting the way the authors use their
inimitable writing style to achieve their intentions in the story will give us more idea how these stories are alike and distinct.
In a way, these two stories are similar because both the authors had carefully chosen the words...show more content...
In the beginning , Billy thought the landlady was 'terribly nice',which he was quite grateful to have such a nice landlady who give him a
well–appointed service, but as the conversations go on, Billy was then frightened by her weird and creepy contents, he 'sat there staring straight ahead
of him into the far corner of the room, biting his lower lip.' tells the readers that he's begin to frightened and suspect landlady, foreshadowing the readers
that she might be doing something that couldn't be trusted by Billy.
In another way, these two stories are different because the authors have been using different perspective when narrating the story. In 'Chemistry',
author's written the story in the word of narrator, mixing both the perspective of adult and young boy's. Line" My father's death was a far less remote
event than my grandfather's but no more explicable, I was only seven." can be a good example. Almost the whole story was written in past tense,
added to the effect of recalling. He's shown a grown up man recalling memories when he was back in 7–10 years old. This kind of writing style makes
readers felt more personal, because the subject is 'I', when reading out the story, readers will feel like they're experiencing the narrators' life, as if they
are the narrator. Also, another interesting fact about this kind of writing style is that if I were to look at the same events in other character's
perspective, it might be another whole different story because

Short Story : A Literary Piece
A short–short is a peculiar literary piece. It creates a world, full of characters and wonder in under 2,000 words (roughly 7 pages). Most complete
fiction stories are hundreds of pages filled with wonder and conflict. The characters are well developed, as are their back stories. The reader is sucked
in and dropped in a world created in the mind of the author. In a short–short you must do just that, but instead of starting a reader in the beginning of
the timeline you must drop them in the midst of the storyline.
There are many do's and don'ts that must go into writing short–shorts. My first thought was that I would write my short–shorts as flashbacks, but that is
nearly impossible to do with the limited word count. A flashback requires you to create the present and then recreate the past with enough detail to
keep the reader engaged. Once I came to that conclusion I threw those ideas out. Sadly that left me without any ideas on the type of story that I should
create. It wasn't until I was have a discussion with my significant other that he gave me the idea for my first short story presented in this portfolio.
This is a unique story, because I brought in a theme from my poetry portfolio and conceptualized it from a different perspective. I decided that I
would write a story about morals, but instead of taking it from the cliched right vs wrong point of view, I would take it from the perspective of
someone who thought they were doing right even though the rest of the world

Essay about The History of English
The History of English The most commonly spoken language in our day, would be English or as some people might call it " The Lingua Franca ". It
is a language, which is taken almost a thousand years to evolve, mainly through its borrowings from other languages such as French and Latin. It is
actually classified as part of the Germanic group of languages. Even though it is the most commonly spoken language today, it is not without its faults,
which would be its phonetic symbols only, representing one sound and each sound would have its appropriate symbol. Most European languages are

When the first English tribes came to settle in England they made contact with the people that had been part of the Roman Empire which probably

Danes made continual raids upon the English coasts which they later settled. They were then defeated by King Alfred the Great. A hundred years later
another Danish King invaded England and managed to get his son, Canute, was put upon the English throne. These Danish invasions, however
destructive they were, had quite a tremendous influence upon the English language. The English borrowed words such as skin, ill, get and leg.

Summary Of A Short Story
my initial thoughts of the short story were mixed. I was not sure of who or what the story was about, when the story was taking place or how it was
relevant to the ten year old child. Once I read through the story and fitted the pieces together and got a basic understanding of the story, and I thought it
was a sad, eye–opening stand of ideas.
2. This story fits the criteria of a short story best. It could also be a fictional story and a fable.
3. The exposition of the story begins when the author introduces the boy, Marvin. His father is taking him through the higher levels of the colony, to
places he had never been before. They get into a scouting vehicle suitable for outdoor conditions, and they go far away from the colonies view. Marvin
is amazed and overwhelmed with excitement.
The rising action takes place when Marvin and his father drive past an abandoned crashed rocket. The surrounding area was dark and you could feel
the coldness surrounding the gloomy area. Marvin's father tries to pay little attention, he put his head down and increased his speed through the

The climax begins when Marvin catches his first glimpse of the earth and is astonished at the sight. He is overwhelmed with emotion when he sees the
fullness of the world. He sees the torn ruins of the coasts and the darkest parts of the earth that were glowing with radiation.
The falling action begins with Marvin's father's explanation of the world's condition, why it is

some with a voice that colonizes your thoughts. Some do it quietly, almost without you even noticing, and some do it with high wire acts of
imagination or intellect that make you into a breathless witness. The trick, then, is finding the right story, one that is capable of such a thing. This
is no easy task. Tastes differ, of course, and it can be confusing to spot the small boat of a great story on the wide sea of fiction. What any reader
can offer you in terms of guidance is actually the same thing that any good writer can offer you with the story itself: a way of saying, This is what
moved me and made me feel strange and alive in some way; here, why don't you give it a try? In that spirit and in no particular order, here are ten
short stories you might've missed that ambushed me with their odd wonder: 1."The Zero Meter Diving Team" by Jim Shepard (BOMB Magazine)
This curious,

Ap English Short Story

  • 1. Ap English Short Story English Homework – zilan elma The glistening sun scorching my eyes bring me back to consciousness , i have only a few seconds of silence before i am overcome with an unbearable screech next to me . "AGH , no , no, THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING!" My body halts up immediately at the sound of the familiar voice and without warning vague memories of the past hours flood back into my brain , the panic , the need for survival , the hell . "Rose , rose are you– YOU'RE BLEEDING ROSE YOU'RE BLEEDING" cries Alice , after a few years of being friends with her , this became her casual voice , panic ,worry and utter depression . "I– i think i'm fine , it's not that big of a deal " i reply trying to sound as normal as possible . When i eventually open my eyes i can finally see my surroundings and the first thing i notice is the clear blue water crashing with the golden beach , the clean sky and the smell of fresh air . Scanning the area around me , i realise that Alice and i aren't the only survivors , there's : Arthur , Damien and Claudet . There all unconscious so Alice makes it her duty to try and wake them . During these few minutes i decide to process our situation , where we are , what the hell happened and what we're going to do now . Looking behind me i'm hit with a rich , lush forest looking to be full of life and heaven like . Peacefully glaring at the woodland i feel like my problems float away and that i'm as free as a feather able to float into the clouds and never return, leaving behind the inferno of a past that i have and creating a new life for myself ....show more content... Everything fades and i am left with a few seconds of shouting from the group of survivors before i am left in nothingness once again Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Short Story An hour later, his leather jacket and helmet stowed with his motorbike, Phenix dropped from the twenty–foot high rammed earth wall of the temple where Kalyssandra and the monks lived, landing like a sleek shadow on the ground. He crouched low, using the heavy shrubs as cover to scan the temple perched precariously close to the natural ridgeline of the peak. There was no need for the security of a wall to cover the rear, as an intruder would need a mode of flight to gain entrance. As for mortals, the elements and an unequivocal death resulting from a plunge to the jagged ravines below acted as a good deterrent. Even in the soft sable lighting, he could see the garden was a magnificent recreation and miniaturization of the larger natural...show more content... Past a lotus pond ringed with weeping willows, the leaves within kissing breath of the inky waters. He crossed an arched covered bridge spanning the pond to the far side of which stood a pavilion. In the shadows of one of several crimson stone columns holding the heavy wood and stone roof aloft, he listened and adopting the stealth of a hunting cat, he slipped through a pair of red–lacquered lattice doors. A tall dark spirit screen used to deflect ghosts and unwanted spirits from entering the room faced him. Phenix angled his head, first checked left then right before walking toward the end of the screen to peer into the interior of the large room, lit within from the soft yellow glow of a row of candles sitting in small bronze dishes atop a stone altar overlooked by a statue of Buddha. With the certainty of knowing he was not alone, Phenix crossed the black flagstones to pause beside one of the many red lacquered wood columns dotted throughout the room. "I know you are there," he said to a deep shadowed corner, using the principal dialect of the region. A resigned sigh floated out of the darkness followed by the soft susurration of cloth moving. "I congratulate you on your stealth, stranger," a soft tenor voice answered. From out behind the shelter of the altar, a tall figure cloaked in darkness stepped. "However, you insult our hospitality by not entering through the front door of our home; therefore I offer no apologies for the welcome." "It is not your Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Essay on Original Writing: Short Story Original Writing: Short Story It was the night of the year that few children can sleep. The night when everyone hopes that snow will fall and they will wake up to a garden of glistening diamonds grown by the morning sun. It was Christmas Eve. As many had hoped, snow was falling. It slowly covered the houses and streets in a thick blanket. The moon shone her silver light down on the white world, and but for one, there was nobody to view the kind of beauty that things such as love and dreams are made of. The only one there to see the spectacle was a small boy of five, or six years. The boy made himself stumble a few more steps, and pressed his face to the glass door he had arrived at. He looked in, and saw the church was lit up inside. There was light coming from behind a man on a big cross, and two huge Christmas trees shone in heavenly splendor. Looking at the man on the cross, he had a faint recollection. He half–remembered, a long time ago, that someone reading from a big book had said that the man on the cross would come on Christmas. That he came every Christmas. The little boy supposed that if anyone would help him, it would be the man inside. He loved everyone. So, the little boy laid down in front of the church, and as he slipped off into sleep, a glimmer of hope, that the man would come and save him from the cold and loneliness, warmed his heart. The snow continued to fall, and bells jingled far in the distance. Presents were laid under trees, and visions of sugar plums danced in most children's heads. But not the little boy who slept on the church steps under the winter

  • 5. Essay on Short Stories and Poetry Short Stories and Poetry There are many different forms of writing that all fall under the name literature. These different ways to create literature are often categorized into specific genres. Some of the genres have more in common with each other than others. Two genres, theshort story and the poem, share many similar aspects. Both the short story and the poem can successfully send powerful messages or tell complex stories in a very short amount of words. Both genres contain carefully manipulated language that quickly yet effectively establishes the meaning of the short story or poem. Point of view is a prominent aspect in controlling short stories and poetry. Faulkner creates a first sentence that describes how "our whole town went to her funeral" (1), using of course the first person form of "we" (28, 43, 46, etc...) The narrator is most likely one of the townspeople who represents the point of view of the entire town. Through the use of plural first person narration, the author makes the reader feel as if though they are part of the story, grasping his or her interest more quickly. Faulkner employs this first person narration in the first sentence of his story, thus immediately capturing the reader's attention. The reader's engagement in the story also adds to its emotionality. By feeling as though he or she is a part of the story, the reader often feels sadness, joy and other emotions with the characters of the story. When the townspeople were "surprised when Homer Barron...was gone" (46), the use of "we" (46) forces the reader to feel the same confusion and shock that the townspeople do. The first person helps to enrich the variability and appeal of the short story. This use of first person to strengthen the feeling of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Short Story: First Person Narrative Fiction The short story is told through a first person narrator, this is due to the narrator is a child called Elizabeth and that she uses words such as "I" and "We". We get a glimpse of Elizabeth's thoughts and actions through the quote "With the sun in my eyes, I couldn't see my mammy's face, not even squinting with both arms above my head and my head tilted". Everything we know about the story is something that Elisabeth has experienced and therefore our knowledge is limited by her view of the world. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Not one of them could understand or comprehend what the teacher was saying, and being the lively, uncontrollable brats that they were, they didn't care anyway. When the teacher stopped talking, he motioned for the children to follow him along the steep, mud–covered banks of the river. The children understood this and scuttled after him, along the dangerous route that he had selected for them. As the teacher and the mob of children following...show more content... The three children got through the nettle patch and they sat down on the boulders bordering the river, which was now starting to break its banks. They searched around for dock leaves to soften the intense pain of the nettle stings. When they eventually found them they returned to the boulders and tended to their burning limbs. When they could no longer feel the stings theyrealisedthat they were bored, and looked for something to do. One of them, Harry, saw something sparkle amid the foam in the river, and started out to get it. The other two, Chris and Matthew, noticed what Harry was after and chased after him frantically. As Chris and Matthew drew closer to Harry, an immense, sudden gush of water knocked the three kids flat on their faces. Chris, who was quite tubby, and the worst swimmer, couldn't fight the current, and was swept downstream screaming in terror. Matthew and Harry however, fought their way back to the banks of the river, petrified at the thought of what might happen to their friend. While all of this was happening, the torrential rain persisted. So much so, that the teacher decided to take the class – as quickly as possible – to some form of shelter. They ran towards a small, deserted house about a hundred yards from the path, and waited there panting for the rain to stop. Still, no–onerealisedthat three of Get more content on HelpWriting.net

"Not before I kill you." Before I can say anything, there is a sharp pain in my side. It was a hit of pressure and then it was released and replaced with excruciating pain. I scream as loud as I can expect that will make the pain go away. Blood spreads out under me and soaks my shirt. I roll onto my back. The stars in the night sky above me look like glowing white streaks. My body becomes heavy with fatigue and I drift to sleep. "Cynthia!" Someone whispers, causing me to wake up. "Cynthia." Something is up, but I have to find a way to pry it out of him. After an hour of sitting against the door to the bathroom, I finally knock. "Do you wanna talk?" I ask. Complete silence. "Axel?" Still no response. Panic courses through my veins. "Axel. Are you okay?" I push the door open until it is stopped by something behind it. I struggle to push the door further. I manage to get it open enough to where I can squeeze through. The first thing I see when I walk in is Axel, behind the door with a kitchen knife beside of his hand and a gaping wound in his shoulder. I press my hand over my mouth to hold in my scream. I never even heard him cry out or anything. I kneel down beside of him and feel for his pulse on his wrist. His heart is still beating. He is still alive. He turns his head towards me. "Hey." He sighs. "What the hell did you do?" I squeal. "Are you insane?" His eyes widen a bit but he can't seem to keep them open any longer. "What are you talking about?" • 11. Reflection Of A Short Story I enjoy writing short stories because the activity allows me to express my creativity and speak my mind. However, I often have trouble finishing compositions, and my English professors will often tell me I need to improve my work. Recently, I wrote a short story titled "Unexpected" for a fiction–writing class and made countless changes to the tale based on several guidelines. The revisions to "Unexpected" have benefited my story, but I could have done more to improve it. My original story served as an impromptu launching pad for the revisions, which expanded my work into a more stable, detailed narrative. However, I probably should have asked for help from tutors and my fiction professor, Jackie because they understand short stories...show more content... But three methods of revisions helped me better understand the changes I made to my narrative. First, I printed my original work and jotted down revisions based on 25 questions from a book I study in fiction class, What If? Writing Exercises for Fiction Writers. These notes helped me add a wide variety of details to my story. Next, I typed my new story and used a grammar check website called PaperRater to improve the style of my tale. This aspect includes, of course, grammar, but also transitional phrases (I am not sure if those are important in a short story) as well as vocabulary. And eventually, I tweaked my composition after carefully reading my story to myself. I learned that reading your own work aloud helps you further comprehend any revisions you should make. As a result of following these revision guidelines, I improved my story dramatically; it more than tripled the word count of my story to about one thousand words. Furthermore, I usually only use PaperRater for revising fiction and nonfiction works I write for English classes. My new technique of modifying my narratives have truly expanded my stories as well as my imagination. But despite these accomplishments, I could have further improved my story. When I wrote a poetry explication essay for nonfiction writing class, I did not just turn to PaperRater. I asked my professor, Ben, for help writing the essay during his office hours. I wish I could have done Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Essay on Short stories Essay The short stories "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Mocomber" were both written by world renowned author Ernest Hemingway. The two stories are written completely unrelated to each other; however, both stories have vast similarities in the time and place in which they take place. Hemingway is a writer that is very methodical in his word choices. When reading these two stories a second time the reader finds considerable differences in the writing style the author uses in each story. To demonstrate, three sentences from each story will be compared and contrasted to show the differences in word usage, word connotation, and to find which story is written better. The initial pair...show more content... The word "plummeted" as defined in the American Heritage Dictionary "is to fall straight down; plunge". The two words are close in meaning; however, "plummeted" is a better word for the sheer reason that the reader can directly visualize the vultures dive toward earth. When the word "plummeted" is heard a person thinks of plunging to death or fall at in incredible rate. "Plummeted" is much more dramatic and defining then the word "planed." The word "Planned" could have various images connected with it. "Planed" leaves the reader too many options when visualizing the vultures decent to the ground. For example the reader might visualize the vulture gliding down to the ground or zigzagging to the ground. The word 'Plummeted" is a better defined and more dramatic word. Making the sentence, "On the far bank of the stream Macomber could see, above the trees, vultures circling and plummeting down," the better sentence of the two. The next two sentences, "'You Bitch,' he said," from the "Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "'Why not let up on the bitchery just a little, Margot,' Macomber said, cutting the eland steak and putting some mashed potato, gravy and carrot on the down–turned fork that tined through the piece of meat," again have similarities. For example, in each sentence the husband is calling his wife a bitch of sorts; however, it is the use of this word that makes these sentences Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Short Story English coursework The End of the Road It all started to go downhill when my boyfriend started speaking to another girl behind my back, sending text messages and meeting up with her for a 'chat' as he used to say. I never believed anything he said. Neither did my friends or family. Why should we have? Before we got together he was known as a player and someone who continuously flirted with girls even if he had a girlfriend, but after we got together he toned it down and I thought he had changed. I'm fed up with the way he is treating me, I know I deserve better. How did I know that the day I decided to confront him was the day I would never see him again? I decided to go to Daniel's the morning after I had found out about the text...show more content... And that's when she told me. ''It's Daniel'' she said. ''He's been in an accident'' I fell to the floor, I hadn't spoken to him, I've been ignoring him, what have I done?! ''Is he hurt? What kind of accident?'' I asked her. She looked up at me through the tears in her eyes and I knew just from the look she gave me that it was more than a broken bone. He was dead. After Daniel's death I didn't leave my room for about a week, I didn't want to face the world, I didn't want to talk to anyone, I just wanted to be alone with my thoughts. But all I could think about was 'what if?' What if I hadn't ignored him? What if we weren't arguing, would he have been at mine that night? I went on my laptop about a week after, I didn't look at my phone or my laptop because I didn't want any sympathy comments as I knew it would only make me feel worse, but that night I just wanted to see what people had put on his Facebook wall, the moment I logged onto my account, I had thousands of notifications. I switched my laptop straight off; I knew I shouldn't have gone on in the first place. The next day was his funeral, I didn't think I would be able to cope, but I knew I would have lots of people there to support me, but I knew it would be harder for his family than it would be for

  • 15. The Odyssey: A Short Story The acrid scent of stew and greasy meat hung in the air of the Wailing Walrus. Outside there was a long winter's night setting in with a bitter bite but it was hard to tell inside with its heat and clamor. The tavern was nestled in a small, nondescript port town and while it wasn't the only one, it was the most popular for some undefinable reason. Filled to the brim with men of all sorts. Sailors, merchants, traveling dignitaries, even a few lesser nobles from neighboring lands and a few women littered among them mainly to serve or offer ornament to the tables. There was little to be felt in terms of heat far away from the hearth as one pale woman made her way around the scattered groups of men with consummate ease. • 16. Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories–– Landlady by Roald Dahl and Chemistry by Graham Swift There are lots of great short stories out there, but in my opinion, both 'Chemistry' by Graham Swift and 'The Landlady' by Roald Dahl are two of the most unique and effective stories. They share both similarities and differences throughout. Comparing and contrasting the way the authors use their inimitable writing style to achieve their intentions in the story will give us more idea how these stories are alike and distinct. In a way, these two stories are similar because both the authors had carefully chosen the words...show more content... In the beginning , Billy thought the landlady was 'terribly nice',which he was quite grateful to have such a nice landlady who give him a well–appointed service, but as the conversations go on, Billy was then frightened by her weird and creepy contents, he 'sat there staring straight ahead of him into the far corner of the room, biting his lower lip.' tells the readers that he's begin to frightened and suspect landlady, foreshadowing the readers that she might be doing something that couldn't be trusted by Billy. In another way, these two stories are different because the authors have been using different perspective when narrating the story. In 'Chemistry', author's written the story in the word of narrator, mixing both the perspective of adult and young boy's. Line" My father's death was a far less remote event than my grandfather's but no more explicable, I was only seven." can be a good example. Almost the whole story was written in past tense, added to the effect of recalling. He's shown a grown up man recalling memories when he was back in 7–10 years old. This kind of writing style makes readers felt more personal, because the subject is 'I', when reading out the story, readers will feel like they're experiencing the narrators' life, as if they are the narrator. Also, another interesting fact about this kind of writing style is that if I were to look at the same events in other character's perspective, it might be another whole different story because Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 18. Short Story : A Literary Piece A short–short is a peculiar literary piece. It creates a world, full of characters and wonder in under 2,000 words (roughly 7 pages). Most complete fiction stories are hundreds of pages filled with wonder and conflict. The characters are well developed, as are their back stories. The reader is sucked in and dropped in a world created in the mind of the author. In a short–short you must do just that, but instead of starting a reader in the beginning of the timeline you must drop them in the midst of the storyline. There are many do's and don'ts that must go into writing short–shorts. My first thought was that I would write my short–shorts as flashbacks, but that is nearly impossible to do with the limited word count. A flashback requires you to create the present and then recreate the past with enough detail to keep the reader engaged. Once I came to that conclusion I threw those ideas out. Sadly that left me without any ideas on the type of story that I should create. It wasn't until I was have a discussion with my significant other that he gave me the idea for my first short story presented in this portfolio. This is a unique story, because I brought in a theme from my poetry portfolio and conceptualized it from a different perspective. I decided that I would write a story about morals, but instead of taking it from the cliched right vs wrong point of view, I would take it from the perspective of someone who thought they were doing right even though the rest of the world Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It is a language, which is taken almost a thousand years to evolve, mainly through its borrowings from other languages such as French and Latin. It is actually classified as part of the Germanic group of languages. Even though it is the most commonly spoken language today, it is not without its faults, which would be its phonetic symbols only, representing one sound and each sound would have its appropriate symbol. As the religion spread English added a large number of Latin words to itself to express new ideas connected with the religion. However, this lead to the loss of grammatical gender of the language and therefore mixed the vocabulary. (Internet 1) In the eighth century the Danes made continual raids upon the English coasts which they later settled. They were then defeated by King Alfred the Great. A hundred years later another Danish King invaded England and managed to get his son, Canute, was put upon the English throne. • 20. Summary Of A Short Story my initial thoughts of the short story were mixed. I was not sure of who or what the story was about, when the story was taking place or how it was relevant to the ten year old child. Once I read through the story and fitted the pieces together and got a basic understanding of the story, and I thought it was a sad, eye–opening stand of ideas. 2. The rising action takes place when Marvin and his father drive past an abandoned crashed rocket. The surrounding area was dark and you could feel the coldness surrounding the gloomy area. Unbound by the decaying fence, the cows had strayed to the far end of the clearing. Ruby hopped the fence and began towards them; knowing the ritual, they stayed put. Now that he had breakfast, and lunch if the milk lasted, Ruby began on the path that lead through the woods. He could hear the larks calling; boasting, he imagined, to each other that they, too, were awake. Besides them it was quite. Coming out into the sunlight once again, Ruby paused and took a look around. Exactly as he had left it. • 22. Short Story Of Short Stories One thing that's great about short stories is how quickly they can ruin your life. Maybe you start reading one over your lunch break and, if it's the right one, before that peanut butter cup you brought for dessert even has a chance to finish its melting shape–shift into some kind of sugary cement, the whole world has been destroyed around you and then rebuilt, and nothing is quite the same again. This happens whether you like it or not. Great stories practice this violent beauty on you in a variety of ways: some by making an absurd world familiar (or vice versa), some with a slow burn, some with a voice that colonizes your thoughts. Some do it quietly, almost without you even noticing, and some do it with high wire acts of imagination or intellect that make you into a breathless witness. The trick, then, is finding the right story, one that is capable of such a thing. This is no easy task. Tastes differ, of course, and it can be confusing to spot the small boat of a great story on the wide sea of fiction. What any reader can offer you in terms of guidance is actually the same thing that any good writer can offer you with the story itself: a way of saying, This is what moved me and made me feel strange and alive in some way; here, why don't you give it a try? In that spirit and in no particular order, here are ten short stories you might've missed that ambushed me with their odd wonder: 1."The Zero Meter Diving Team" by Jim Shepard (BOMB Magazine) This curious, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
