Prayer Evangelism …
 The apostle Paul urged, entreaties and prayers
“on behalf of all man, for kings and all who are in
authority” because God “desires all men to be
saved and to come to the knowledge of truth” (cf.
1 Tim. 2:1-3, NASB).
Paul desired prayer to be proliferated “in every
place,” with men “lifting holy hands,” the posture
of blessing (v. 8).
The outcome of such prayer was to lead to
“peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness
and dignity.”
Prayer then, changes us. It sharpens our witness.

Prayer Evangelism …
But Paul is also suggesting that prayer impacts
the city in which we live.
It affects leaders and the unsaved.
It is the key to evangelism and awakening.
The highest calling of prayer is communion with
God. But the noblest use of prayer is as an
intercessor, especially when we pray for the lost.
Sometimes we can’t pray for ourselves. That’s
when we need an intercessor.
Sensitivity in prayer will never allow us to focus
only on our own needs. Praying for those under
stress and pressure around us is so important.

The Three Greats …
The Great Commission … sharing the gospel!
…needs to be wrapped in the Great
Commandment to have maximum impact.
The Great Commandment is – “You shall love the
Lord your God with all your heart” (Matthew 22:37-
39).
Loving God with all our heart, our mind and might,
until the power and effect of that love transforms our
love for our neighbor, and we love others as we love
our self.
That is the message of the Great Commandment.

The Great Commandment – Love!
 Something happens in conversations with people who
feel that we love them.
Love changes the relational environment.
Love breaks down resistance.
Love is irresistible.
Truth without love is like bitter medicine without
sugar.
Truth is the fact of the gospel; love is reality of the
gospel.
Truth is the head talking; love is the heart touching.
Truth is propositional; love is incarnational.
The Commission and the Commandment have to
go together.

Paul gave us another “great.”
It is sometimes called the Great Commitment:
I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers,
intercessions and the giving of thanks be made for
all men, for and all who are in authority…this is
good…in the sight of God our Savior who desires
all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge
of the truth (2 Timothy 2:1-4).
Prayer aimed at community leaders and the
unsaved is the key to getting them into a
relationship with God.
It is also the key to a safe community, according
to Paul.

Intercession is the means by which we pray the
blinders off unbelievers.
And communion with God, the basis for
intercession, the context of it, is the means by
which we ourselves are changed into credible
witnesses.
The more we pray for the unsaved around us, the
more we find God loving them through us.
Prayer changes us, and it works to open the heart
of our friends to the reality of God’s presence.
And sensing God’s love, those previously closed
to the gospel and the reality of God, are suddenly
open to consider truth.

Intercession and the Lost…
The Great Commission is not optional; it is a
command.
Love infects us. We have to talk about Christ.
He saved us; we cannot help but whisper His name.
To see the world dying and withhold life-giving
support is criminal.
How can we keep quiet?
Prayer strengthens us for that task.
And prayer opens the hearts of those for whom we are
praying.
Prayer, in fact, creates the connection that allows the
sharing of faith to take place.

Intercession: God Loving
Through Us in Prayer…
Love constrains.
Prayer lengthens the arms of love, reaching
beyond our human capacity.
Standing before the Lord, the intercessor stands
in behalf of the other party.
At times, with a sense of urgency, the intercessor
races to stand between God and some offending
party (Numbers 16:47-48), and by that act, the
intercession calls a truce.
He pleads for mercy.
Intercession builds a protective wall around the one
who is guilty!

Intercession: God Loving
Through Us in Prayer…
Intercession doesn’t remove the offense; but it may
delay judgment.
This is not a hostile act against God or a defiant
position taken that resists either his right to discipline
or the need for it.
Intercession provides a momentary reprise.
Stepping into this gap is precisely what God
wants us to do.
Intercession creates time and space for the Holy
Spirit to work.
Intercession, partnering with the Holy Spirit,
calls the individual to repent.
It pulls victims “out of the fire” (Jude 1:23).

Intercession and the
Character of God …
 The very fact that we pray to God is an
indication of our faith, not only in God’s ability,
but in His character.
Crying out to God is the instinctive sense we have
within us about the nature of God. He is a God of
love, good and full of mercy.
Why would we pray to a God who did not love us?
The absence of a clear conviction of God’s love is
an impediment to prayer, the enemy of faith, the
antidote to hope. Love says, “He cares! He is
good! He cares about me, and if I pray, he will
respond with grace and mercy.”

Intercession and the Heart of
God…
At Gethsemane, Jesus’ intercessory cries rose to
the Father. His compassion spilled out through
tears of intercession.
Intercession should overflow with deep inward
affection, with God’s tender mercies thundering
up and out of our inward parts.
Jesus Christ, as God, prayed, weeping for humanity.
Epaphras prayed “earnestly” (Colossians 4:12).
Andrew Bonar uses the phrase, “…with strong
[fervent], great wrestling souls are won.”
Paul asked the Romans to “strive together” in prayer.
The word is agonizomai from which we get our word
agony (Romans 15:30).

Intercession and the Heart of
God…
It is the idea of “throwing the whole soul into praying.”
In earnest prayer, we do not merely say a prayer. The
whole of our being goes out in prayer.
We are consumed by the prayer experience. Such
prayer is often exhausting.
Praying is one thing but crying out to God with
Holy desperation is another. It was when Israel
cried out to God that He heard.
Crying out with holy desperation puts us on the cusp
of breakthrough.
John Welsh spent eight hours in prayer daily.
David Brainerd melted the snow, praying.
John Wesley prayed and changed the face of England.

Praying for Non-Believers … Ask
God:
1. To send believers into their lives as a witness
(Matthew 9:38).
2. To open their spiritual eyes and that Satan will
not blind them from the truth (2 Corinthians
4:4).
3. To give them ears to hear (Matthew 13:15), faith
to believe (Acts 20:21), the will to respond (Acts
16:14; Romans 10:9).
4. To help them understand and believe the
Scriptures (Luke 24:45; Romans 10:17; 1
Thessalonians 2:13).
5. To draw them to himself (John 6:44).

God:
6. For the Holy Spirit’s conviction of their sin and
that he will guide them into all truth (John
16:8-11).
7. That He will grant them the grace of true
repentance and saving faith (Acts 3:19;
Ephesians 2:8-9).
8. To increase their desire to know Him (2
Chronicles 15:4; Acts 17:27).
9. That they will believe in Christ as Savior (John
1:12; John 5:24; Acts 16:31) and submit to Him
as Lord (Romans 10:9-10).

God:
10. That they surrender everything to follow Christ
(Mt. 16:24; 2 Cor. 5:15; Phil. 3:7-8).
11. To set them free from spiritual captivity (2 Tim.
2:25-26).
12. That they grow in the grace and knowledge of
Christ (2 Peter 3:18).
13. That they continue to live in Christ (Col. 2:6-7).
14. To sanctify them, not only from the world and
sin, but unto himself for a holy purpose and
mission (Romans 12:1-2).
15. To give opportunities to witness (Col. 4:3), as
young believers for boldness (Acts 3; 4:29).
