Missional Praying…
In the four critical dimensions in prayer ministry,
there are two big cogs that drive the prayer
process.
They are rooted in the two great blessings in
Scripture –
On the first couple and the home (Gen. 1:28),
And the blessing of the Spirit that constituted the
Church (Luke 24:50; Acts 2:1-4).
These two – at-home and at-church prayer are the
mainsprings of your prayer effort.
First, the families of the church gather before God in
their homes, for His blessing;
And then, the church gathers, not for preaching and
teaching, but for prayer.

Identify Intercessors …
Jesus would say “The harvest is plentiful,
but the laborers are few. Therefore
pray earnestly…” (Luke 10:2, ESV).
Prayer engages the Lord; ‘sending forth
laborers.’
If anyone is praying at-home, daily, it is the
intercessors.
The mobilization of intercessors is critical to
the success of any prayer effort and to reaching
the harvest.
However, intercessory prayer is not the best
place to begin a prayer ministry.

Identify Intercessors …
Intercessors must learn the value of prayer as
communion with God for the sheer pleasure of
God’s Presence.
Prayer must be personally transforming, not only
powerfully transactional.
Every believer is called to intercession. And yet,
some have a special burden, even a special
anointing to do the work of intercession.
Tragically, intercessors are not identified, often
ignored and marginalized.
Tapping the “prayer fire” of healthy intercessors
will accelerate the prayer effort.

Five Steps with
Intercessors…
1. Identify the intercessors. Call them together.
Spend an evening with them. Appreciate them.
Enlist their support.
2. Train them. Teach them. Expose them to
balanced prayer theology and practices.
3. Team them. The “night-wall” is lonely, indeed.
Team them, to collaborate, to share, to jointly
adopt various prayer needs. Create networks.
4. Direct them. Offer them assignments. Encourage
them to adopt ministries.
5. Debrief them. Get their night-watch reports.
Seek their insights.

A Word About Intercession…
The end effect of intercession is reconciliation.
The spiritual warfare is due to resistance from
the Evil One who does not desire to see peace
with God established in some unbeliever’s heart
or home.
It is a distraction, not the main thing.
Persevere, but keep the focus on the connection
between God and the subject of prayer.
Balance intercession with personal worship.
Don’t burn out.
Don’t spend all the time in the closet of
intercession.

A Word About Intercession…
The heart of prayer is communion with
God; but the edge of prayer is mission.
Prayer is first God-ward and then outward.
A balanced intercessor will not spend all their
prayer time in intercession. Time must be spent
in simply loving the Lord.
All prayer, even intercession, is to be wrapped in
thanksgiving – a view toward God’s gracious
action in the past; a portal to His presence.
Healthy intercessors can’t live under unrelenting
enemy fire. They too must practice the power of
praise out of a spirit of peace.

Prayer and Passion…
Passionate prayer does not mean disorderly
prayer or fleshly aberrations.
Passionate prayer does not mean loud or
physically demonstrable prayers.
Passionate prayer does not fear the intensity of
voices lifted like a holy rumble, crying out to
God.
Passionate prayer does not fear tears, deep
throbs or sighs.
It does not fear the searing silence when an
entire group is made speechless beneath the
chabod of God’s heavy glory.

Prayer and Passion…
Humans are passionate, but in many churches,
passion is not appreciated, even among
intercessors.
Psychologist James Stewart, This is not a time for
a “milk-and-water passionless theology” or faith.
We will accomplish little by “setting a tepid
Christianity against scorching paganism. The
thrust of the demonic has to be met with the fire
of the divine.”
Passionate praying is an antidote for the coldness
of this hour. Yet, we ourselves are shrinking back,
at a time when the atmosphere of our cities is
swirling with crosswinds from the middle heaven.

Passion and Prayer…
“A lack of love for Christ is at the root of all
that is wrong with the church today.”
A loveless church is always a prayerless church.
And a praying church is likely to have people who
are passionate about Jesus.
Spurgeon: The condition of the church can be
accurately gauged by its prayer meetings. So is
the prayer meeting a grace-ometer, and from it
we may judge of the amount of divine working
among a people. If God be near a church it must
pray. And if he be not there, one of the first
tokens of his absence will be a slothfulness in
prayer.
