2. Asia’s Oldest Stock Market is the Indian
Stock Market. By the end of 18th century,
East India Company used to transact
Loan Securities and during 1830s,
trading on corporate stocks and shares
in Bank and Cotton presses took place
in Bombay.
3. Bombay Stock Exchange(BSE) came into existence
in 1857 when few informal groups organized
themselves. And finally in 1956, the Government of
India declares the Bombay Stock Exchange as the
first Stock Exchange of India under the Securities
Contracts (Regulation) Act.
Now another problem arises, how can we measure
the overall performance of the exchange? But in
1986, the Government of India came with an idea of
BSE Sensex. BSE Sensex (Sensex = Sensitive),
which gave a means to measure the overall
performance of the Exchange.
4. Until late 1980s, BSE kept running with
low transparency and a temperamental
clearing and settlement frameworks.
With the end of the 1980s, new
economic forces, the economic growth
and currency crisis pointing towards the
requirement for modernization of the
money related framework. Government
created the Securities and Exchange
Board of India (SEBI) in 1988.
5. In April 1992, with the crash of Bombay
Stock exchange, due to Harshad Mehta
Scam, Finance Minister Mr. Manmohan
Singh urged the need of other Stock
Exchange in competition to BSE.
Against the competition of BSE, he
tapped the Industrial Development Bank
(IDB) to take the lead of the project with
the creation of NSE.

7. Three segments of the NSE trading
platform were established one after
another. The Wholesale Debt Market
(WDM) commenced operations in June
1994 and the Capital Market (CM) segment
was opened at the end of 1994. Finally, the
Futures and Options segment began
operating in 2000. Today the NSE takes
the 14th position in the top 40 futures
exchanges in the world.
8. In 1996, the National Stock Exchange of
India launched S&P CNX Nifty. CNX Nifty
(Nifty = National Fifty) is a diversified index
of 50 stocks from 25 different economy
sectors.
In 1998, the National Stock Exchange of
India launched its web-site and was the
first exchange in India that started trading
stock on the Internet in 2000. Today, NSE
has roughly 66% of equity spot turnover
and roughly 100% of equity derivatives
turnover.
9. The National Stock Exchange of India
Limited (NSE) started dealing in
derivatives with the launch of index
futures on June 12, 2000. The stock
futures contracts are based on the
popular benchmark Nifty 50 Index.

10. The Exchange introduced trading in Index
Options (also based on Nifty 50) on June 4,
2001. NSE also became the first exchange to
launch trading in options on individual
securities from July 2, 2001. Futures on
individual securities were introduced on
